--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Clyde Barcus" <barcusc@comcast.net> For those that are interested in using the Corvair Engine in Zenith XL models, Albert and Ronald have several complete engines for sale, prices (Currently) range between $200 and $300. I bought mine from Albert and he has about 30 of the 110 Hp engines along with quite a few cylinder heads and crankshafts, Ronald didn't say how many he has but both of them are ready to sell off their collections. If you are interested in using the Corvair engine in your XL make sure you get the right model. I recently meet them while searching for a used engine to use in my project, their names and phone numbers are: Albert Ramsey Cookeville, TN Phone: 931-526-5120 Cell: 931-261-5813 Ronald Lynch Rock Falls, IL Phone: 815-625-5025 Cell: 815-718-2820

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Cdngoose" <601xl@sympatico.ca> Hello Listers I have spent most of the evening making all the name tags for attendees of this years Sun-N-Fun event which you can pick up from the Zenith booth any day of the event. All the tags have the builders name on them as well as the plane there building or flying plus a picture of a 601 or a 701. I plan to have all name tags attached to a string for wearing around the neck. In this way other builders throughout the week can always spot a Zenith builder and Zenith Booth attendants will be far better able to handle your personal questions without long introductions every time they meet a builder. I have made all the name tags so far from the Sun-N-Fun BBQ attendants form and I would like to ask all others that are going to Sun-N-Fun wither or not you will be able to attend the BBQ please fill out the form so that I can make up your name tag before the show. You may also need to have the name tag to get your Burger or dog, depending on traffic to the event. I think with over a hundred people registered for the BBQ a few of those RV types may try to sneak in ( after spending that much on an engine they may need all the free burgers they can get). This event is for Builders/owners/wannabee's. So if you haven't filled out the SUN-N-FUN BBQ FORM at www.ch601.org or www.ch701.com why not? IT 's main purpose is to help each of us Discover and meet with our extended family of like minded Zenith owners ! Fill out the form please. http://www.ch601.org/BBQ/bbq.htm Mark Townsend Alma, Ontario Zodiac 601XL , Osprey 2 serial # 751 President: Kitchener/Waterloo RAA Chapter www.ch601.org / www.ch701.com / www.Osprey2.com

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Miller" <drmiller@cvillepsychology.net> Hi listers, People have posted about their satisfaction with the Harbour Freight HVLP sprayers. Harbour Freight lists about eight different models, varying in price from $39 to $59. One of the $59 models has it's own electric compressor. If anyone has had a good experience with one of these sprayers, could you let me know which specific model it is? my-god-i'd-be-lost-without-this-list, bob N722Z 95% complete, 50% (i wish!) to go.

I would really love to attend and meet everyone, get tons of questions answered in a lot less time than through the list, and gel friendships that have been started here but unfortunately my trip there last year will have to carry me through for at least one more. I will be there in spirit. It would be cool if this could become a tradition at other appropriate gatherings as well. Although there are few flying events in my area, and even fewer that attract Zenith owners and builders, I am available to help organize similar get-togethers for our fraternity at Copper State or other fly-ins within travel distance from southwestern New Mexico. Subject: Re: GEO Engine
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave & Darlene" <dnimigon@telusplanet.net> Hi List I'm kind of mixed up here. On Raven's site www.raven-rotor.com/ they show the 1300SVS, 115 HP that they say will replace the 912. They also say this motor can be used in the RV series and the 601 (maybe this is just a sales pitch). Persons on the list are saying it's too high RPM for the 601 and yet they also talk about persons using this motor in the 701 and similar planes. I don't want to start a big discussion here about who is right or wrong but just need your thoughts about this all. Am I wrong in thinking the 115HP is produced at a high RPM that's not suitable for the 601. The redrive that's used will turn at the proper RPM won't it, but will this then have the engine screaming to meet that 115HP. I'm only going from experience in motorcycles and small engines that will produce high horsepower but at high RPM were as a lower RPM high torque engine is much better for long duration under load. So I'm wondering who is right here and am I better to go for the Corvair as I originally was going to. I guess why I'm thinking about this combo is because of fuel injection versus carb, also in the Corvair I'm dealing with an old engine although WW has proven it's power and reliability. I also live in Canada where the winters can be cold so carb ice is an issue. I have access to either engine at good prices as a buddy of mine has a wrecking yard so the initial engine cost is minimal. Also I've rebuilt engines in the past when I used to race cars, mostly dirt track and 1/4 mile stuff so the rebuild part is not an issue. I'm no expert when it comes to the proper engine/plane combo but learning. Is Raven selling this setup with no regards of how long it will last. You experts out there can give me your thoughts. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Cdngoose" <601xl@sympatico.ca> Thanks Paul Every year we have the builders dinner at Oshkosh, the open house at Mexico in the fall and the open house in Midland in June. All these spots are potential gathering points. But we really didn't have anything in the spring after a long or an all to short building season, we wanted to create a gathering of people that we talk to all winter, just to say hi or in Larry's and Scotts case for me shake there hands for all there assistance over the season. Sun-N-Fun seemed like the best spot in which to do this and the BBQ was a natural idea. Hopefully we will be able to make it an annual event for all of us, but if not then lets do our best to make this years one for the aircraft Magazines !!!! I can see the headlines now Zenith Builders Rule or Zenith builders friendliest Guys in the Skys! For those of you who are unable to make it this year and have sent letters of appreciation, I would also like to Thank all of you, your kind words are what keep us going. When I get back from Sun-N-Fun I will post all the pictures and stories I can so you folks will feel like you were there. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Winston Ellis <w1mdi@cox-internet.com> The 115HP that Raven quotes is what they are hoping to get out of the yet to be finished turbo-ed version of the 1.3L. The non turbo version might see 90HP. The red line that Raven suggests for these 1.3L engines is 5500RPM at the top of the power curve, but less than the Rotax. The Suzuki factory red line is 6500. What the Suzuki has going for it is being one of the lightest auto-conversion engines in the 80 to 100HP range and the much better $/HP ratio when compared to a Rotax. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com> Dave, When you look at the effort that's being put to sell the 1300 Suzuki without declaring specific rpms that the Horsepower is derived of, you have to say something is being over-sold. Especially in the context of replacing a 912 or using the engine on a 601. The carburated 90 HP 1300 is probably a good piece for a 701 as it has few prospects for exceeding 100 mph in level flight. Using it in context with the RV series aircraft is inappropriate, even with turbo to raise the ante. Your Corvair is a much better choice for the 601 and possibly, even the RV series. Take a redrive of 2.5 to 1 at 6000 and you get 2400 rpm at the prop. 2.2 to 1 gets you 2700 rpm where I suspect the Suzuki is just about maxed out. I'm not expert nor an engine guy, but the numbers just don't add up. Back off the rpms to a comfortable cruise of less than 5000 rpm and you have to guess that less than 75 hp is available. Let the Buyer be aware. Larry McFarland Dave & Darlene wrote: >Hi List >I'm kind of mixed up here. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Gary Gower <ggower_99@yahoo.com> Hello Larry, Just one point of view. You dont need all the HP of the engine all the time... Maybe only in Choppers :-) The airplanes need certain amount of max. power to take off and climb. (5 to 10 minutes) then when they are trimed for cruise or "normal" climb, they need less power. There used to be a book about aircraft design by some real expert maned Crawford that got simple calculus and nomograms to get this numbers. was a blue book with soft cover. I bought it about 15 years ago or more, used to be in Kitplanes and Sport Aviation classifieds. From some planes that I calculated was about 30% (or less?) of the take off power that was needed to keep them flying. depends in drag, speed, winga erea, etc. I will look for that book. Is GREAT! Has to be in one of my boxes. Saludos Gary Gower. A normal process for all scratch builders. Don't worry it only gets worse! Which would explain why I have 5 engines in my garage and I'm still looking at picking up a Corvair to play with, and before anyone says anything I'm putting a Subaru in my 601XL I just keep flip flopping on which one. Presently I'm building up two of them and the lightest power plant will win. Subject: Nose gear questions for 601XL
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mark Stauffer" <mark.stauffer@cablespeed.com> Fellow builders, I fabricated the lower bearing support and attached it along with the lower bearing to the fuselage. I also installed the nose gear. 1. You can't put the aft bolt through the nose gear bottom bearing because 6B8-7 Center Firewall Stiffener is in the way. How did you get around this? Did you a) Drill holes on each side of the stiffener and pass the bolt through the stiffener and the bearing? or b) trim the sides of the stiffener up from the bottom to clear the bolt? Option A. seems a little tricky but seems to be the best answer. Any thoughts or suggestions? 2. The nose gear is very stiff. I can move it up and down only if I twist it at the same time. Have others experienced this? What did you do (if anything) to remedy it? 3. I haven't put the stop plate on yet (6G2-3) but I can already see that with it in place the steering rod attachments will not be sitting down in the groove of the bottom bearing. Right now the top of the nose gear is below the top of 6B7-1 (Firewall Top Stiffener - Front). Has anyone else run into this? My issue is that with the nose gear down at the stop, the steering rod bolts will not be sitting down in the groove of the lower bearing. I suppose I could shim the bearing up from the lower support. Thoughts? As usual thanks for all of your help and suggestions. Mark Odenton, MD 601XL working on fuselage Looking forward to meeting many of you at SnF. Do not archive

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "royt.or@netzero.com" <royt.or@netzero.com> Mark, Nick recently referred me to www.zenithair.com\stolch801\data\gear-nose-s1.pdf which addresses your first question. There has been lots of discussion in the past about stiff nose gear. Suggest that you search the archives. Also, be sure to grease both the top and bottom bearing. I don't have any information about your third question.
