Subject: | 601 HD with O200 or O235 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: chrisoz@bmail.com.au
Hello Gentlemen,
I feel the old itch and the time to build an other Zodiac is coming up. After
building two with Rotax 912 and one with an EA81, I am now looking at putting
an O200 or O235 in. Spice is the variety of life :-)
Here are my questions:
How much do they weight, and is the O235 to big for the HD?
Anybody flying those engines, what is your climb rate?
I am not so worried about the top speed, as a taildragger the HD should do
100mph no matter what, but I am wondering wether those heavy (?) engines make
the plane sluggish.
My EA81 Zodiac weighed 710 lb, with the engine weighing 240 lb fluids
included, and while it was doing fine speed wise, it climbed at only
800ft/min, and was a bit of a truck.
The 912/ 80 hp at 554 lb climbed with 1200 ft/min, like a homesick angel,
beautiful.
What is your experience with the O's?
Thanks,
Chris from Oz

Has anyone installed brake peddles on the co-pilot
side of a 601 XL, and what does it take to do it? We
have the tail done and working on the wings. But my
copilot was studying the plans and wondering about
installation of brakes on both sides. Is it possible?
Expensive? Lots of welding and fabrication? Or does
Zenith sell a package to do that?

I need some sources of information for the electrical
system on my 601 XL. I have the electric trim in the
elevator and aelerons, landing and nav lights, and
planning a Dynon electric panel with maybe a Jabarue
engine, plus elt, com radio and intercom. I need to
learn about what goes into an electrical system, where
sources are for electrical materials, and how to put
it together. A complete electrical diagram would be
nice. I don't know what to do about the "fuse panel".
Is there something more modern? Electronic circuit
breakers? It seems that with all the trim motors
requiring 1 amp breakers and all the electronc stuff
and lights, I will need a pretty large circuit breaker
panel.
Any help would be appreciated.

An invaluable source of information is Bob Nuckolls from AeroElectric. Go
to www.aeroelectric.com. Buy the book, which has a lot of advice and
electrical diagrams like the ones you mention. There's a link to B&C, which
carries electrical supplies, on the aeroelectric web site.
Hope this helps.

Also, for good guidelines and practices, go to www.homebuilthelp.com. Look at Electrical Wiring 101 for Homebuilt Aircraft.
They offer a DVD on basic wiring practices among others. A must have.

Hey Thilo, that short landing and taxying backwards sounds like FUN! We
used to do 'power backs' from the gate on the DC-9, but we were required to
have our feet OFF the brakes so as NOT to accidentally dump the airplane on
its tail!
One thing I'd add to that emergency plan: KEEP the FLYING SPEED -- point
the nose as far DOWN as necessary to maintain 80mph (or whatever)... this
could be the hardest part as I'm sure it will be very steep.

They won't cause any problem that I can think of, but if they offend your
sense of 'completion'...
All 'closed in' sections need to have a drainage hole drilled (at least
under Can. regs)... there is a minimum size specified for this hole to
ensure that it won't plug up and water can drain out of each place it might
accumulate. Why not just drill a hole just large enough to get that rivet
head out? (if memory serves, 3/8" is required by the CAN. regs and that
might be just about big enough...)

lots of fun cruising around the airport grounds. Thanks for everyone who
provided tips on getting my Jab3300 fired up for the first time. First
flight should be in the next week or so.

Subject: Jabiru Engine won't start
Question for those of you using the Jabiru 3300. I have attempted on
two occasions to start my engine but was unsuccessful. The very first few
times it would immediately fire but then die. I suspect I'm not getting
the fuel to the cylinders. I have no gas smell typical of a flooded
condition. Before the final fuel line installation, I pumped fuel out of
both tanks using the electric pumps and was getting 20 gph out of each
side. Is there something about the bing altitude compensating carb that
could contribute to some sort of air lock? Any other thoughts?
Thanks

On the subject of drainage holes.... A tech counselor taking a look at my
701 a few weeks ago was concerned about water collecting, as he looked at the
"upside down" horizontal stabilizer. His view, and it made sense to me, was
that quite a bit of water could accumulate in there. Have others put in low
point drainage holes, or has anyone found a problem with this issue? Like a
corrosion problem?
I have not done anything about it yet, but would like to know whether anyone
feels this something worthy of correction.
Thanks,

Corrosion will not be an issue unless you live on/next to salt water.
6061 will not corrode past the first few microns of the surface, the
reason behind this is that aluminium oxide (alu rust!) is waterproof and
prevents further corrosion (unlike steel).
The preoblem becomes between parts that rub together, that's why you
prime the mating parts to preven the "rust" from being rubbed off.
After 6 years mine has no corrosion at all.

My earlier e-mail concerning the new owner of this 701 was in error.
Actually he has had 5 space missions (3 as commander) and will do his next
