Just an FYI for the 601XL builders. I noticed a whole bunch of new photo
guides just appeared on the builders section of zenithair.com. Extensive
jigging instructions in 6-b-11b now. Shame I'm already past that!
Some of these items would have saved me re-ordering a couple of parts.
If fact, Nick asked if certain bits of info would have helped, and now
they are in the photo guides
ZAC are certainly good at listening and updating these things.

Hi Chris
Ray Lasnier reckons from the manual which is vague
the 0 200 Weighs about 250 lbs with accessories.
Will weigh and let you know actual weight in a few weeks as the engine will
have to be removed to move plane to airfield.
Beleive the all up weight will be about 730 lbs Ray is currently painting
the wings & on completion will assemble plane completely in workshop for
inspection & final weight & balance check.
A drawing is available from zenith for the engine mount but you will have to
make one yourself & also make your own cowel

Picking up the kit at the factory is a great idea if you live
reasonably close. The basic kit will fit in a mini-van with the rear seats
taken out (not including engine and FWF package). You may want to wait on
buying your engine and make a second trip later. That way it doesn't just
sit there taking up space and you can take advantage of any improvments
they make in the next couple years.

I am considering ordering my airframe kit now, if ZAC could have it ready
prior to my builder's class in August, that way I could avoid shipping and
save a trip by bringing it back with me. Good or bad idea? More
importantly, will the kit fit in my van, or would I need a trailer?

I hesitate to wade into this discussion because the people involved may
already be well aware of my concerns. I have a 601HD with tri-gear, and
originally bought a Continental O-200A. After a while, I did some weight
and balance arithmetic, and this engine, to my mind, did not make any
sense. The engine had a 60 amp. alternator on the back, which meant the
engine would have to be moved far forward to clear the nosegear leg.
This meant the battery would have to go in the tail with long heavy copper
leads forward. Even then, the aircraft was nose-heavy, probably requiring
extra weight in the tail. To be clear, this was early days for the 601
(i.e. 600!), and I had a header tank, not wing tanks which would help move
the C of G aft. What this meant was that there was no gross weight left
for baggage; the heavy engine itself uses up gross weight. Also, the fuel
burn would be high. Thus, it was my judgment that I would be putting an
awful lot of effort into an aircraft which was badly compromised from the
start. [I sold the O-200A (at a loss!), and installed a Rotax 912S
instead.] Obviously, others may have a different view of this, because I
have certainly seen a couple of pretty 601HDs flying with
Continental/Lycoming engines.

I looked through the updated construction manual pages
for the 601 XL as pointed out by another person.
Being new to this building process (Picked up my kit
last February) I didn't quite know what to do with the
modified dimensions shown on the Stabilizer front spar
attachment of the 6T2-2 attachment doubler angles and
6T2-1 angles. The wood block spacer was changed from
the 219 mm on my plans to 233 mm on the new manual
pages. Is there a corrosponding dimensional change on
the airframe where the stabilizer is mounted? I
didn't see changes there? Or does the stabilizer now
mount farther forward on the airframe due to the
increase of spacing by 14 mm? All of this is on my
manual page 6 of 10, section 6-T-1A.

This should make your stabilizer mounting brackets match better.
If you look at the Zenith demonstrator aircraft very carefully you will see
that
the alignment is slightly forward w/resp to the bolt holes.

Hi Grant,
one of my flyying buddies - an airline captain told the story of the Russian
airliner, which used the reverse trust to back up after turning into the
wrong taxi way....
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I will add the airspeed tinto my emergency
procedure.
On another topic: I decided today, that work really sucks and that I would
need some time off. Coincidently, it is Sun'n Fun time. So I got some
commercial airline tickets.... Will be at the show Thursday and Friday. Hope
to see many of you fine folks there as well as many Zodiacs...

But I already put the stabilizer mounting brackets on
at the 219 mm shown in my plans instead of the new 233
mm dimension shown on the new manual. My skin was
also cut out for the 219 mm dimension. It would be
quite difficult to tear down the riveting of the
stabilizer and try to remount the angles. Or can the
mounting plates on the airframe just be moved to fit?
Is there an error somewhere or is this just a slight
improvement in construction?

I have my 601 canopy from ZAC, but expect to not have time to install it for
time. It's rolled up and wrapped in paper (a 5-foot package about 16 inches
in diameter). Would it be advisable to unroll it to prevent it taking a "set,"
and/or any other concerns with temporary storage?

Mine came out like the demonstrator when spaced at the 219mm width. I asked
Nick about the snug fit that required slightly off center bolt holes in the
brackets. It was not a strength issue but one of more perfect centering. I
doubt you will have any more problem than I did, but you will see the
difference that the wider width makes when you mount the stabilizer. I did
not have to remake anything.

Brett,
You're probably busy getting ready for Sun'nFun, but I hope you'll be able
to let us know the results of any testing re whether the LED nav and strobe
lights meet the FAA specs. If they do, I would love to order the whole set.
Many thanks,
Bob

Weight should be empty of fuel. Thanks in advance

I'm in the process of replacing my canopy bubble (first one cracked while drilling
the last darn hole...). I ordered the replacement about 7 months ago, and
it's been sitting in the corner of the hangar, rolled up in its original paper
just as it was when I received it. I saw no difference in working with this one
than I did with the first one, which I installed almost right after I received
it. If it were me, I'd store it rolled and wrapped.
One last bit of advice -- don't try to do anything with it until it's very warm.
The risk of cracking when it's cold is too expensive of a mistake!

I already did that section, I'd be rich enough to not have to build this
thing. For what it's worth, mine is constructed per the original plans, and everything
seemed to fit just fine. Of course, I haven't flown it yet....

Greetings...
Since the old-style steel exhaust system I got with my new/old
FWF package is evidently unsafe at any speed (see pic at
http://www.cleco.ca/ch701/construction_gallery/new_engine,
I am looking for the more standard s.s system with transverse silencer.
Anyone know of one for sale? I would also consider changing the steel
elbows in the system picture for stainless, and going with that, if
someone knows where I could get the elbows.
I'm also looking for an in-cowl H2O rad, the Rotax one (16.5 x 5.5 x
1.5") with the four bosses for vibration mounts.
Thanks...
