David I have flown the Skyshops demo with the 4 wheel floats and
due to the lack of control friction in the rudder it flew a LOT
nicer than the Zenith demo on wheels. One downside however is that
taxi operations unto a beach or soft shore is sometimes impossible
with the 4 wheeled floats. (from Grant Rappe, Skyshops demo pilot)
It's also 15# heavier than the nosewheel model. LOW&SLOW John

The preferred engine is the 1965 through 1969 110hp with RD, RF, RH, RX or

Of all of the aircraft related companies I have dealt with, (a bunch), I
have to admit Zenith is one of the best, if not the best, customer oriented

Hi...
I'd like to hear from users of what George Pinneo describes as
"the original steel squashed-cylinder dual-mufflers" that were supplied
by Zenith in the mid 90's.
(You can see this system at
http://www.cleco.ca/ch701/construction_gallery/new_engine/index.html
if George's description doesn't work for you...)
I've been strongly advised to scrap this system and not use it under any
circumstances, based on several failures seen by the advice-giver.
George, on the other hand, seems to have been happy with his (at least
until the year 2000, the date of his archived post to this list).
So, are there other 912s using this system with good or bad opinions?
Thanks.

What idle speed do you manage to get down to on the Rotax 912?
Obviously this needs to be as low as possible so you don't extend the
landing roll more than necessary. Some recent measurements here in the UK
have indicated that having the idle too high by just 30% above normal can
increase the landing distance by an amazing 60%.
We find that ours on a 601HDS just will not tickover below 1000 RPM or so
without the engine jumping around so much that you can't keep the
screwdriver in the adjusting slot. It does not get smooth until 1200-1300
RPM and we use 1700 during warm up. No amount of carb balancing will let us
get below this figure.
Having gone through the broken mounting brackets saga last year we are
paranoid about engine stability so tend to keep the revs high.
What speeds do others manage?

No, nein, nicht, ie, non, and negatory-goodbuddy, not all Corvair engines are appropriate
for conversion. I would strongly recommend you get Wynne's book before
you go engine hunting. He is very specific on what to get, and even gives
part numbers to look for. They're out there, and relatively easy to get, so
don't jump at the first one you come across until you've checked the part numbers.

Hi I am a prospective 701 builder. I am looking for some basic performance

can be a major problem because the temperature in the summer can get hotter
than 80 degrees. Please let me know if you guys think the 701 fits the

Subject: | Fuselage construction sequence - 701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Robert Schoenberger" <hrs1@frontiernet.net>
List . . . just finished the second wing on my 701 - what a good feeling to be
able to move on to the fuselage. I haven't had a chance to review the plans
and photo assembly manual for the fus yet, but a couple of general questions.
I would like to continue building in my basement workshop as I did for the wing
and tail. I can get long flat pieces such as the wing out of the basement,
but the width and depth of the fus cross section are too great to get it out
of the door at the top of the stairs as an assembled structure.
1. Are there any problems with constructing the fus in the basement using clecos
and then disassembling it and moving it to a worktable in the garage for final
riveting?
2. Perhaps a dumb question, but should the worktable be significantly lower in
order to work comfortably on the fus?
Thanks for any advice on the above or other tips to make the construction process
go easier. Robert Schoenberger 701 55%

I have just started my 601xl (6-5803) and have a few nagging quesitons that hopefully
you all can clear up for me;
1. While drilling the rudder skins I INITIALLY did not use a rubber washer (this
has since been corrected) I marred about 9 of the holes. only two were bad enough
to be noticable on the inside of the skin...I called the factory and they
said that it is not a structural issue and if I want I can fill in with body
filler for cosmetic appearance. any thoughts?
2. While aligning and drilling the rudder leading edge skin, the bottom rivet hole
on both sides violates the 10mm rule (each only has an edge distance of about
6mm) where it attaches the the main spar. again I called the factory and they
said as long as it was not the entire line of rivets, that it should be o.k.,
but being the anal-retentive kinda guy that I am I am still concerned about
structural integrity, cracking, etc. would I be better off snipping off the
corner at a 45 degree angle and adding a new rivet that is 10mm from the edge?
3. Due to cleco-ing and re-clecoing to check the fit of the trailing edge skin,
the last holes on RR #1 and #2 are now a little oversized for an A4 rivet. The
rivet still fits but obviously it is loose. would there be any benefit to widening
these holes and replacing the A4's with A5's?
4.(last one, promise) I read the thread regarding the spacing of the stabilizer
front spar attachement being changed from 219mm to 233mm. I am concerned because
I JUST RECEIVED updated plans from ZAC dated 12/04 and the spacing is still
listed on page 6-t-2 as 219mm.
Thanks for your input and sorry for being so long-winded

Hello Brad:
Glad to have you aboard. Let's take a look at your questions:
1. No problem.
2. Again...one rivet/side? Shouldn't be an issue.
3. Hmmm..THESE should be strengthened/replaced with A5 rivets.
4. Plans dated 12/4 are not current to those issued 3/05. Go to the updates
page on the website and take a look to the most current updates. Is your
spar pre-drilled? Double-check and see what you have before proceeding.
You're not long-winded - you're thorough. As you gain experience you'll be
GIVING advise very soon !!
As a suggestion: please include 'do not archive' on questions/posts you feel
should not go into list archives.

Subject: | Re: Fuselage construction sequence - 701 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: RURUNY@aol.com
Rob,
I did lots of my fuselage construction in a basement where it would not get
out fully assembled.
1) Rear fuselage first: drilled and clecoed all 4 sides together, this
included the builders option x braces for oilcanning. Also look ahead at the
rudder manual as I did all the cuts and
drills for fairleads where rudder cables exit fuselage. I squared fuselage
also and installed the rudder hinges and fit the rudder to the fuselage. This
is where you position the exact location
of the rudder hinges. I got this far all using clecoes. At this point I
built a short narrow bench
slightly wider than rear fuse to finish its assembly in the garage upstairs.
2)The fwd fuselage area floor, tunnel, gear channel, sides, seat belt
attach, rudder pedals, longerons are all fitted cut to size, drilled and clecoed
in
basement on your bench.
3) firewall assembly, nose gear strut and bearings are all done in basement.
4) Drill and cleco to firewall to fuselage floor, if you have engine mount
clamping it to assembly helps. Engine mount will need to be trimmed at bottom
and side attach points.
5) I built another short workbench about the length and width of the floor
with some space to
lay tools on for the garage and then riveted floor together. Then joined
rear fuse and floor.
While assembling the fuse look ahead at the upcomming manuals, especially
the controls and final assembly sections. Lots of stuff that would be a pain
later is easy while it still comes apart.

Richard,
ROTAX have issued a service bulletin that directs that idle revs should not
be below 1200 rpm as damage can occur to the reduction drive and crank case
at lower revs.
Suggest you check those SBs to get the full story.

Well, I recently sold my 601 w/912, but I can tell you I noticed a
substantial increase in power when I changed to the new single muffler system.
It is
much better. I had read and heard from several different sources, which I cannot
recall, that the duel system created excessive back pressure.

Just finished up the flaps. I found that the latest revision to the drawing moves
the control plate 90 degrees and puts in a slot rather than the hole that
used to be there. Of course I realized this after I had mounted it the original
way. It worked fine though. (Pics on the website.) LESSON LEARNED> Check
the revision before cutting!
I think this will make the mounting and alignment easier when I mate the flap to
the flap torque tube.
