Jim has built a Zodiac himself, and as a Tech Counselor has been closely involved in the building of several others. In February he spent 5 days in Charlottesville helping me backwards engineer and repair a very problematic section of my 601HD aft fuselage that had me in a state of frustration and befuddlement. When he left, not only had I learned the equivalent of a college level course in sheet metal, we had completely figured out and strategized the repairs that needed to be done in this area of my project that had stumped several guys a lot smarter than me. Most of the guys I consulted about the problem had said "I think it'll be ok". I know what they meant was "I'm not sure what to do about it, I'd probably just fly it that way", and I might've too, but it didn't seem ethical taking passengers on an even marginally questionable platform. Since Jim was here, I'm finally moving forward on completion, and for the first time feeling excited about the fact that I finally know all I need to know to complete this project, have fun doing it an experimental way, and stay well within or exceed published minimum standards. (I didn't attend the rudder workshop because I'd purchased my project partially completed from a father-son pair of builders who were aircraft mechanics. Little did I know I'd spend the next year repairing their mistakes.) So if you see Jim, tell him hello for me, will you? And if you want to learn more about building with sheetmetal, I expect you'd get a lot from his workshop. Jim has a passion for sharing his experience and knowledge. At about 4:30am this morning there was an odd system problem on the Matornics email server, causing many mail files to become marked as "read-only". This wedged many of the List filters causing all sorts of weird behavior. Perhaps the oddest was that an innocent message from Walter Critchlow, kept getting posted instead of the actual incoming List message. We have the engine idle set for 1,300 to 1,400 (dificult to set exactly, as closr to this figures as possible). BUT this idle speed is ONLY USED when flying the aproach to land and for start with the choke (when required). Once the engine started and the choke is release we inmediatly pull the Throttle to 2,000 When warming up, or at the ramp, or waiting for take off at the strip, we set the engine at 2,000 rpms with the trottle and brakes. The reasons are this: 1.- Set to 1,400 because: The choke will not work properly if the engine is not at idle, never had a problem to start the engine at this setting. This rpms (1,400) because at the less idle speed is better to slow down the airplane approach speed, we have tested to set it lower than 1,400, but in two ocasions the engine died, so is a risk we dont want to take. 2.- Keep the engine at 2,000 because at this speed runs smooth, betwen 1,400 and 2,000 there is sometimes a "rattle" form the clutch or maybe the transmision. any strange noise whatever is the surce we try to avoid it. Is very easy as a pilot to get used to set the fricton throttle instantly at 2,000 Just needs a little practice. Use your finger against the panel to feel the little movement. Hope this helps. Obviously this needs to be as low as possible so you don't extend the landing roll more than necessary. Some recent measurements here in the UK have indicated that having the idle too high by just 30% above normal can increase the landing distance by an amazing 60%. We find that ours on a 601HDS just will not tickover below 1000 RPM or so without the engine jumping around so much that you can't keep the screwdriver in the adjusting slot. It does not get smooth until 1200-1300 RPM and we use 1700 during warm up. No amount of carb balancing will let us get below this figure. Having gone through the broken mounting brackets saga last year we are paranoid about engine stability so tend to keep the revs high. What speeds do others manage? Yet, only wheels. Your altitude, temperatures and surrounded peaks are similar to our area, we have cruised to 12,500 ASL at gross with no problem at all. We have flown at gross (two adults, full tanks and maximum baggage weight as per manual), with no climb or performace problem noticed... Our 701 climbs and cruises perfectly at 5,000 rpm (engine "likes" this setting), we even had a 1,000 ft/min thermal climb at cruise for one minute... we were "transfered" from 10,500 to 11,450 very easy without any problem, no imput but keep the plane level, the downdrafts are also similar here . Cruises at 83 indicated (87 GPS average both ways almost calm winds) we have flown for almost 4 hrs, at a little over 4 gph @ 5,000 rpm. Very confortable seats. The plane performs great at altitude with the 912S. Saludos Gary Gower 701 912S Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico Airport at 5,029 ft ASL. David Karlsberg wrote: --> Zenith-List message posted by: David Karlsberg (by way of Matt Dralle ) Hi I am a prospective 701 builder. I am looking for some basic performance figures of a 701 with the rotax 100 hp engine and floats. I am most interested in speed, range, service ceiling and useful load. I also know there are two different types of floats available (the ones with 4 wheels or 3) I have a house at Lake Tahoe where this plane would be based. It is at 6000'. It is also surrounded by 10000 foot peaks. Ideally I would like to use the plane to commute the 300 miles to my other house. Density altitude can be a major problem because the temperature in the summer can get hotter than 80 degrees. Please let me know if you guys think the 701 fits the bill. Thanks, David
