91.205 Powered civil aircraft with standard category U.S. airworthiness
certificates: Instrument and equipment requirements.
(a) General. Except as provided in paragraphs (c)(3) and (e) of this
section, no person may operate a powered civil aircraft with a standard
category U.S. airworthiness certificate in any operation described in
paragraphs (b) through (f) of this section unless that aircraft contains the
instruments and equipment specified in those paragraphs (or FAA-approved
equivalents) for that type of operation, and those instruments and items of
equipment are in operable condition.
(b) Visual-flight rules (day). For VFR flight during the day, the following
instruments and equipment are required:
(1) Airspeed indicator.
(2) Altimeter.
(3) Magnetic direction indicator.
(4) Tachometer for each engine.
(5) Oil pressure gauge for each engine using pressure system.
(6) Temperature gauge for each liquid-cooled engine.
(7) Oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine.
(8) Manifold pressure gauge for each altitude engine.
(9) Fuel gauge indicating the quantity of fuel in each tank.
(10) Landing gear position indicator, if the aircraft has a retractable
landing gear.
(11) For small civil airplanes certificated after March 11, 1996, in
accordance with part 23 of this chapter, an approved aviation red or
aviation white anticollision light system. In the event of failure of any
light of the anticollision light system, operation of the aircraft may
continue to a location where repairs or replacement can be made.
(12) If the aircraft is operated for hire over water and beyond power-off
gliding distance from shore, approved flotation gear readily available to
each occupant and, unless the aircraft is operating under part 121 of this
subchapter, at least one pyrotechnic signaling device. As used in this
section, shore means that area of the land adjacent to the water which is
above the high water mark and excludes land areas which are intermittently
under water.
(13) An approved safety belt with an approved metal-to-metal latching device
for each occupant 2 years of age or older.
(14) For small civil airplanes manufactured after July 18, 1978, an approved
shoulder harness for each front seat. The shoulder harness must be designed
to protect the occupant from serious head injury when the occupant
experiences the ultimate inertia forces specified in 23.561(b)(2) of this
chapter. Each shoulder harness installed at a flight crewmember station must
permit the crewmember, when seated and with the safety belt and shoulder
harness fastened, to perform all functions necessary for flight operations.
For purposes of this paragraph
(i) The date of manufacture of an airplane is the date the inspection
acceptance records reflect that the airplane is complete and meets the
FAA-approved type design data; and
(ii) A front seat is a seat located at a flight crewmember station or any
seat located alongside such a seat.

Flew my Zodie 601HDS for the first time on April 10th. It flew well
with no rigging problems! Did have CHT issues with the Jabiru 3300 which
required pulling back power, remaining in the pattern and landing. Some
issues to sort out there, but a number of others have tackled this
previously so will discuss this with them. A great feeling to have the
first flight under my belt after 7 years of off and on building!

Hi Zenair Sun and Fun attendees-- or those already there- Where are Zenairs going
to park. If the weather clears a bit I will take N601TD and hopefully meet
a lot of folks for the Thursday festivities. I've never seen two Zenairs
parked next to each other so don't know if there is any "tradition" involved here.
In the past I have parked the Mooney in the vintage area and it's convenient
to most things.
Sure is a pain to have the field close 2 1/2 hours sooner than in the past.
Will make for some early morining decision making.
Thanks

Subject: TieDown Testing
The discussion about tiedowns the other day was very timely and got me thinking
about building my own. I liked the nail idea and decided to build and test a
pipe type and one of my own design. Mine might not be unique, but I haven't
seen one. I'm not going to sell them anyway, so it doesn't matter. I didn't
have a dog screw-in type, but someone said it pulled out pretty easy anyway, so
why test it.
I have posted the results on my site. You can see them at www.angelfire.com/un/ch701/tiedowns.html. If that doesn't work just go to my site and look at the bottom of the home page.

List . . . occasionally someone will bash ZAC for one thing or another. I'd like
to relate a positive experience. Sunday, almost a year after I received the
fuselage crate, I opened and inventoried it. (I know - this is supposed to
be done immediately!) After finding all the parts in good order, I lifted the
bottommost layer of cardboard and was very surprised to find a sizable quantity
of very useable sheet "scraps", some of good size. These will come in handy,
and I thank ZAC for this extra bonus. Robert Schoenberger 701 55%

Not sure if everybody has seen the latest from the FAA regarding the Special Light
Sport Aircraft
(SLSA). Here is the announcement contained on the EAA website.
Jim
====================================================================================================
=========
04/07/05 - FIXED-WING MANUFACTURERS GET THE GREEN LIGHT TO SELL READY-TO-FLY LSA
Light-sport aircraft manufacturers producing fixed-wing LSA can now sell their
aircraft as special
LSA (S-LSA), opening the door for sport pilots and others to purchase these aircraft.
The FAA
Thursday (April 7) issued a Notice of Availability (NOA) for the last critical
consensus standard
for this category of LSA, "Standard Practice for Maintenance and the Development
of Maintenance
Manuals for Light Sport Aircraft."
Larry Werth, light-sport aircraft program manager for the Small Airplane Directorate,
confirmed
that the NOA had been signed earlier today. "This is the last piece of the puzzle;
now fixed-wing
S-LSA manufacturers can issue their statements of compliance with the ASTM consensus
standards and
start selling aircraft." Work continues on the standards for experimental LSA (E-LSA)
kits for all
categories of LSA.

Subject: | Fuel gauge question for EIS users: |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Randy Culp" <randy_culp@hotmail.com>
Question for those of you who are using the Grand Rapids EIS:
Are you also installing separate fuel gauges?
Or only using the EIS to monitor your fuel levels?
Or both? (Is that possible?)
I'm just wondering if it's a big deal to have to "page" through the EIS
displays during the pre-flight or not. I've never actually used one of
these yet.
Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
Thanks;

I used the EIS only for fuel gauges and set-up a programmable page to
display fuel level and other parameters all the time. Once you use it
awhile, it is very easy and accurate.

I purchased the electric aileron trim tab option for
my 601 XL, and was getting ready to rivet up the
ailerons when I noticed that I hadn't installed the
trim tab. I have the parts, but no plans or manual
pages describing the installation or where it even
goes. Does anybody know where on the CD or plans
package they are? Or which section on the ZAC web
page they are? Or has somebody else already received
them from ZAC and can can email them to me?

Dean, I don't use an angle drill a lot, but when I need one it is very

It works well and wasn't too expensive. Check it out. I have some there are

Thanks Randy, I appreciate it. My co-builder found

hoping there were some manual pages to help with the
dimensions too, but she couldn't find them anywhere.
