I am shopping for insurance for my new 601XL SLSA which will be delivered in August.
One aviation
insurance company said that they can insure the aircraft provided that there are
more than 25
registered and flying in the US. There are perhaps hundreds flying in the US.
Nevertheless this
particular company needs a relaible reference or source document or something where
the number of
registered 601XL's is listed. Does anybody know where to find this information?
Thanks,
Jim

It seems like Zenith Aircraft would have that information, and they would be
authoritative.

Rather than an angle drill I would invest in a couple of die grinders. I
didn't when I built the 601HDS but I use them all the time on the RV.
The RV seems to have a lot more situations where a right angled drill is
necessary and with those metal cutting burrs are the die grinders are
very very useful...And dirt cheap from harbor freight. Using the $1.60
3" cutting disc from Vans is no better way to trim the canopy in the
right angled die grinder.
How does this relate to a RA drill?....the die grinders come with 1/8"
and 1/4 collets...It will take a #30 drill and by slipping a short
letngh of 1/4" tube on the end of the drill bit a 3/16th works great
too. With the very small head the RA die grinder makes it a good
impression of a tight fit RZ drill.

Dean, I don't use an angle drill a lot, but when I need one it is very
handy. I found a good one at

It works well and wasn't too expensive. Check it out. I have some there
are some pics on my web site. http://www.zodiacxl.com/Elevator.htm

Question for those of you who are using the Grand Rapids EIS:
Are you also installing separate fuel gauges?
Or only using the EIS to monitor your fuel levels?
Or both? (Is that possible?)
Yes, we installed a separate fuel gauge. The best there is, a
see-through tube connecting the top and bottom of the tank as
recommended by ZAC and our tech counsellor Kent Paser.
The EIS gives a very exact measurement of the fuel remaining and is not
affected by the aircraft attitude as is the tube.

I have a couple of thoughts.
First don't tie down your plane to something you could put inside and fly with.
Second as an engineer I could put a factor of safety of at least 4 on the results
to find save loads. Given the different soils you could encounter and the
value of a plane this is probably not conservative enough.
Pull out 150 Safe load 38
Pull out 280 Safe load 70
I'm not sure you have something better than good wheel chocks or digging holes
in the ground and rolling the wheels into the holes.
One method I have used when in the bush is to bring a shovel, a sand bag (empty)
and rope. Fill the sand bag with dirt. Dig a deep hole. Bury the full sand
bag with the rope around it in a hole. Fill and compact the hole with dirt.
If you do the rope trick right you can leave the bag and just take the rope when
you go. This method along with 8" deep holes for the wheels worked in up
to 40 mph winds in the old tri-pacer. The wind blows in Bristol Bay but there
is great fishing and lots of game. Point the plane into the wind!!!

The discussion about tiedowns the other day was very timely and got me thinking
about building my own. I liked the nail idea and decided to build and test a
pipe type and one of my own design. Mine might not be unique, but I haven't
seen one. I'm not going to sell them anyway, so it doesn't matter. I didn't
have a dog screw-in type, but someone said it pulled out pretty easy anyway, so
why test it.
I have posted the results on my site. You can see them at www.angelfire.com/un/ch701/tiedowns.html. If that doesn't work just go to my site and look at the bottom of the home page.

Sure. The FAA N registration numbers list. First off, get a list of
completed planes or a builders list from Zenith, then go to the FAA file
and get the N Numbers. Only one problem I can see. Any 601XL registed
will be experimental. Will the Ins company accept that?

I went to the FAA database (thanks, Bill) and after discarding the registrations
which were for
other Zenith models, or you could not determine what the model was, I calculated
the following
statistics for the 601 models:
601 XL Registrations = 75
601 HDS Registrations = 69
601 HD Registrations = 37
Other 601 registrations = 5
TOTAL 601 Registrations = 186

Craig,
Just search on the model, not the manufacturer. Search first for "Zenith" under
model and you'll
get a bunch, including 701's etc in addition to 601's. Then search for "Zodiac"
and you'll get a
bunch more 601's, 186 in all for 601's.

It's hard to say without being there and troubleshooting the problem,
but it sounds like you may have a grounding problem. Make sure that the
ground that you have provided for the intercom, and the radios, is a
good ground all the way back to the negative terminal of the battery.
In fact, you can connect some temporary jumpers direct to the battery
for troubleshooting. Don't forget to keep a fuse in line.

I'm still struggling with my audio system. My panel consists of a PS
Engineering audio panel with marker beacons; With one ICOM A200
transceiver; and, one Garmin (Apollo) SL-30 IFR Transceiver/VOR.
Intercom on the audio panel works great by itself but when connected to
the radios I get nothing.
I have checked interconnection wiring for the upper and lower Molex
connectors.
Also when power is on all lights are illuminated with low intensity
except the selected indicator light which is brighter than the others.
Interconnection was in accordance with the drawing provided by PS Eng'g.
The avionics shop at Aircraft-Spruce wasn't much help.

Are there are any radio technicians out there that can help?

Thats right, here we had lots of problems with planes insurance, we kind of beg
them for actually get our money off our hands! In a Club metting we ggot
a plan to work the insurance diferent.
We buy "wholesale", all the 50 (~) airplanes in the club goes in a package for
the best Insurance company that give us the best price/coverage.
In this last 3 years. They really fight for the package. Most of the time the
winner also gets a bonus of several other insurance plans (personal, car or bussiness)
from some members...
Even the insurance policies that are "alive" they get the promise to change to
the winner when renew time gets there. We like to make the "group power" work.
For next year another club with about 30 planes will join us in the "deal"...
You will sorprise how great they treat us since. Maybe is diferent in USA...

It is not Zenith's responsibility to keep current with all their
aircraft registrations. Some never get registered. However in the good
ole USA the FAA does an excellent job of making registrations a matter
of public record. The FAA web site listing Zenith aircraft registrations
is:

Once there
1) Click on tab "Make/Model. This takes you to the FAA registry screen.
2) On the FAA registry screen leave the mfg. blank.
3) On the FAA registry screen enter "Zenith" in the Model Name.
This should satisfy any Insurance Company as to an official list of
registered Zenith aircraft.

But aren't the builders listed as the "manufacturer". I am for my 601XL.

Great Idea! Jim, Something you want to look into?... Approach Avemco or
another one of the 10 underwriters that write aircraft insurace to see if
they would write a group policy to insure a group of 601's at a "fleet"
rate... How many members of this list would be interested in such a plan?

Hi Ron. I was just out on the field and they try to park the homebuilts with their
type. I just saw Brian Martin's bird but haven't met his yet. Will tomorrow
night though. Hope to see you there (here) Weather is predicted to be fabulous
like it has all week with the exception of the rain this am. Fly safe.

Hi Zenair Sun and Fun attendees-- or those already there- Where are Zenairs going
to park. If the weather clears a bit I will take N601TD and hopefully meet
a lot of folks for the Thursday festivities. I've never seen two Zenairs parked
next to each other so don't know if there is any "tradition" involved here.
In the past I have parked the Mooney in the vintage area and it's convenient to
most things.
Sure is a pain to have the field close 2 1/2 hours sooner than in the past. Will
make for some early morining decision making.
Thanks

Some are also listed as Zenair models so a model search on "Zen" will
retrieve even more, I believe.
By the way, does anyone have any C model or O-200 Cont. rocker arms and
pushrods they are willing to part with?

Craig,
Just search on the model, not the manufacturer. Search first for "Zenith"
under model and you'll get a bunch, including 701's etc in addition to
601's. Then search for "Zodiac" and you'll get a bunch more 601's, 186 in
all for 601's.
