Subject: | Fuel fitting leaks, Pipe thread sealant |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: ruruny@aol.com
Recently I made a post that Permatex high temperature thread sealant worked on
sealing the threads
for the fingerscreen and the hose nipple that screws into the fingerscreen. I take
it back and hope no one has used this stuff. I leaked checked both tanks for
my left wing this week by simply filling them up full with gas and letting
them sit for a while. I checked them 3 days later and found nothing leaking but
not having the time to empty them I let them sit for another 4 days. Yesterday
I found both tanks with
fuel weeping thru the joint of the fingerscreen fitting and the hose nipple threads.
The joint between the tank and fingerscreen was not leaking. I removed the
fitting and it looks like the fuel (auto) dissolves this fuel resistant sealer.
The new zenith manual 11/27/04 says to use Permatex Form-A-Gasket or Sealube.
I have ordered from Spruce 1 each of Aviation Form-A-Gascket, Sealube, Bakerseal
to try these out.
Has anyone had sucess with any of these. I know its bad to use teflon tape in the
fuel system but has anyone
used pro seal on pipe threads or is it just as bad as the tape.
Bad news is my 2 right wing tanks are riveted in the wing with this stuff that
were leaked checked for 4 days good. Good news is I put access panels under each
fitting just in case they needed maintenance.
Also good news, 4 tanks and no leaks in welded seams. Seals for senders were good
also.
Thanks Guys

Hi Jeff,
Count me in on the group insurance too - certainly can't hurt to check it out.
Thanks

Given the fact that many in this group are at Sun & Fun this wekk I'll post
this next week as well.
If you're interested in participating in a group insurance scheme, send me a
note and I'll put your name on a list.
Once I get a sizable list together I'll approach a few of the big
underwriters to see if they're interested in writing a group policy.

I think pro seal is not really intended for threads.
I used teflon based thread sealant for plumbing fixtures from the
hardware store (says it works with all fuels). Never had a leak in 6
years.

What you want for pipe type thread seal is Loctite PST or just plain pipe
dope. On the other hand, The IAs I have consulted say NOTHING. If it leaks
get a different fitting if tightening doesn't work. I personally use the
first.

I used sealube on my fuel fittings and have seen no evidence of leaks after nearly
a year in service with auto gas.
The problem with teflon tape is when the fittings are reused. When fittings sealed
with the tape are disassembled, the tape comes off in long stringy pieces
that can get into the lines and plug things up if they are not all removed. the
tape can be removed from male threads well enough but it's very difficult to
remove from the female threads.
