Grant and other prospective ELT buyers--
It's official, from the latest US gummint "Notice to
Mariners"---
The Cospas-Sarsat Program has announced plans to terminate
satellite processing of distress signals from 121.5 and 243
MHz
emergency beacons on February 1, 2009. Users of the system
will have to switch to emergency beacons operating at 406
MHz,
which are more reliable and provide search and rescue
agencies complete information that they need to do their
job, in order to
be detected by satellites.
Reasons for the Cospas-Sarsat program to discontinue use is
driven by guidance from the International Maritime
Organization
(IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO). These two agencies are responsible for regulating
the safety
of ships and aircraft on international transits and handle
international standards for maritime and aeronautical
search and rescue
missions. In addition, 121.5 MHz false alerts inundate
search and rescue resources which impact the effectiveness
of lifesaving
services.
--- Altho this doesn't bode well, I sure hope they provide
some sort of grandfather clause, and continue monitoring
the 121 ELT, perhaps just domestically. Otherwise, there
gonna be lots of flyers putting out big $$ for the 406 units.

Don,
I understand your position about what engine to hang on your plane. I have been
trying to figure that out as well, ever since I bought the kit. A few things
I might suggest to you in regards to auto engine vs. certificated engines....
But as a disclaimer I have not yet hung an engine on my plane and what follows
is just an opinion, and we all know the value of opinions....
any auto conversion that you hang on your plane is going to be heavy. not only
the block itself which may weigh much less than, say an O-235, but remember you
will have to hang a radiator, fluids, hoses, and all the other accessories
to make it run. In my research, the finished, installed weights were actually
about the same.
There are lots of subaru engines out there, not only in ZAC planes, but also in RV's etc, you might be able to find an RV pilot who can give you some more specifics. I did get a chance to talk to a subaru-powered 601 pilot @ sun and fun who said he was having cooling issues, but remember, that was one pilot and one plane. Of course, there is the corvair engine (www.flycorvair.com<http://www.flycorvair.com/>); I have not come across any ZAC plane with VW's or 1/2 VW's
The Rotax's seem to be getting pretty good press, (www.kodiakbs.com)<http://www.kodiakbs.com)/> and maybe someone with a rotax 601 can chime in about his/her experience.
There is a new 110hp engine out of Australia called the Jabiru 3300, and if you watch the 601 demo clip on the website, I believe it has the Jabiru installed (it has the cowling air intakes on the eyebrows)(http://www.usjabiru.com/aircraft_engines.htm<http://www.usjabiru.com/aircraft_engines.htm>)
After all my research, talking to builders, even chatted with one of the Heintz's
I have decided to put one of the "antique" lycomings in my plane for the
following reasons;
1. they may be old but they are a proven powerplant with a good track record.
2. parts are easily/readily avaliable
3. simple to work on
4. as a friend told me "they are practically bullet-proof"
as a point of reference;
an O-235-F produces 125hp and has a dry weight of 249-251 pounds with a 2400 hr
TBO.
Good luck choosing your engine, I hope my opinion helped and didn't muddy the waters
too much for you....

Good Morning Brad:
You just learned a valuable lesson that I've had to learn a few times while building.
I found it necessary to think two or three moves ahead before drilling
any holes. Unfortunately you can't always do that, but in most cases you can
plan everything out and see trouble coming.
I've had to make all of my parts from scratch so I always question the dimensions
before making a part. ZAC has changed so many things in the two years since
I started that I now have to check four or five update lists before making a
part. Fortunately I've just about used up all of my drawings and I'm on my own
now.
Get some of those long, deep vice grips in various sizes (Like these http://www.cooknwithgas.com/5_05_03_Clamps.jpg) and try to clamp as much together as possible before drilling and you will see where problems may arise.
One day soon you will be clamping that horiz. Stab to your fuselage and get a big
grin when it fits right in to place.

As there were no replies thus far, here is my experience:
I tried the pounding method on my centre spar, and trashed it. More than 1/3 of
the rivets
wouldn't pass a QA test (good info on rivetting, standards:

Many people had good results with it, I probably just didn't do it right: there
are a few
precautions you should take (stabilize the spar with sand bags and such).

I have now decided to go with a rivet squeezer, borrowed from an friend who is

As a follow-on,
I had a long discussion with Travis at ZAC this afternoon. apparently my pre-drilled
front stabilizer spar was drilled for the old 219mm dimension. And there
is no way that I can see to "adjust" the attachment of 6t2-1 and 6t2-2 without
violating the 10mm edge rule. The best edge distance I can manage is only 4-5mm
which is not enough.
Travis SAYS its no big deal, that the 219 will work fine as long as I specify that
I need an HD fuselage which has the correct spacing of 6b3-3 and 6b3-4. Oh
well, hard lesson learned. Take home message for those of you who have not started
on your stab yet, be sure you know which spar you have (219 vs 233)

Are any of these new 408 MHz ELT's available now? Who
sells them? It has been known for quite a few years
that the 121.5 MHz ELT's are pretty worthless for
locating anybody. Just look at reports on how many
planes have been lost in the last few years. So how
much are these new ELT's?

I'm building from plan and I was thinking of using integral tank instead ,
for saving money and getting more fuel 2 or 3 gal hope fully in with the
same place.

I helped a friend make wet tanks for his Midgit Mustang and that was all the convincing
I need to never do that again. Every seam and every rivet has to be sealed.
The sealant he used was very expensive; $80/pint if I remember correctly.
Even after taking extreme care (and making a mess with the goop), he still
fought small leaks for a long time. I think having a fuel cell within the wing
is the way to go.

If you are looking for more fuel capacity consider ZAC's new 15 gallon
tanks. This is how they did it:
"There is no change to location of the inboard ribs, the nose rib
across from rear rib 6 is moved outboard to rib station 1750, we add an
extra nose rib in line with rear rib #7. The length of the tank is
increased to 1265mm"

Here in the mountains of Utah a Subaru is not exotic at all. But I'm
going with a Corvair engine as are many others. It's cheap, air-cooled,
smooth and needs no PSRU.
