I agree 100% with larry ,having worked as a tech at the local Harley dealer
since 1973 ,(yup i,m gettin old) lol , i was blowen away when i saw that hog
abt 1 year ago on his 601 . He has inspired me to plans build a 701sp and
hang a hog on it , I,ve just got the materials and am working on the rudder
.It wont be the fastest plane at the flying club , but sure will be the
nicest sounding one there .
Thanks again Brett ,see you in the air in abt 5 years .

Dave:
1) The rudder components are already primed for you to save time. I think
they use the Cortex wash primer.
2) The white nav light is installed when you get it with the wing kit - it
should not be a problem to get it on after the rudder is complete.

A couple questions regarding what I can expect at the builder's workshop:
1. When building the rudder, are we given the opportunity to prime the
inside before riveting?
2. If we want to install nav / strobe lights in the rudder, will we
have the opportunity to do that?

Thank you for the good time with like minded people. It was fun talking

the same at Osh? Are you even going to Osh? Do Zenith builders that go there
and camp usually try to stay in the same area? Thanks. Rog

At this time it does look like I will be going to Oshkosh, but after
discussion with Jon and David we decided not to repeat the BBQ at
Oshkosh, even though it is a lot closer to home for us. Oshkosh is the
higher end of the aviation world shows and Zenith builders have been
traveling there for years to gather with Chris Heintz and his family at
the Zenith builder's dinner. To have two dinner involved events at one
show I believe would detract from each other and I'm one for tradition,
plus I wouldn't have my buddy Rick Roberts which had a major role in
making the Sun-N-Fun BBQ the great event that it was. So I will save the
BBQ for Sun-N-Fun, many builders wait for Oshkosh passing up the
Sun-N-Fun experience due to the builder's dinner and a bigger show, now
with the BBQ in place and a more relaxed atmosphere it gives each of us
a reason to travel to Florida in April as well or instead of baking in
Wisconsin in July.
As for camping, I was hoping to get all the Zenith builders at Sun-N-Fun
into one spot but being unaware of the camping ground I wasn't able to
give directions before everyone departed. Next April I will be aiming
for the same location and hope that many of you camping can zero in on
us when you arrive. IF that is not possible then I will leave directions
on the post board at the Hosts cabin.

Given the fact that many in this group were at Sun & Fun last week I'm
posting this message again.
Gary Gower mentioned that in Mexico they got a large group together and were
able to find an insurance underwriter to write a group policy for them at
very favorable rates. I'm willing to try to duplicat that here in the U.S.
for 601 XXXowners and possibly 701 owners.
If you're interested in participating in a group insurance scheme, send me a
note and I'll put your name on a list.
Once I get a sizable list together I'll approach a few of the big
underwriters to see if they're interested in writing a group policy. At
present I have over 50 names. If you've already sent me a note, please
refrain from doing so again.
I'm also goingto post a note to the Zenith newslettter folks to see if they
will publish this as well. Might take a few months to happen, but could
save us all some money.

I'm going to have to disagree.
1. I use Dexron III as do many others, with no problems. Much, much less
expensive. Available anywhere - even Wally Mart carries it.
2. I received my Private License on Dec. 1, 1950. This makes my license
older than many of you. 9,000+ hours later I think I can say, "been there
done that." (Remember I am the guy who followed Rotax's installation
instructions and hooked up my oil tank backwards.) I installed my Maco
breaks by following ZAC's instructions (CH 601 HD drawing, 5th edition,
09/03, page F18.) For the length of the top arm to the cylendar plunger the
drawing states, " keep to a minimum." I made mine 32 mm long. On concrete,
at 3,850 RPM, for ignition check, only light pressure is needed on the
breaks to hold the plane. At 5,300 RPM the plane will creep (tires skid due
to loss of traction.) I think that is enough break for anyone.
Lets stop bad mouthing Matco breaks and take a look at how they are
installed.

I dunno it depends on the chemical agressiveness towards the seals.
To be honest there is no point in using a "High performance" brake fluid
as the brakes barely work anyway..It more like they persuade the A/C to
slow down rather than come to screeching halt.
To be honest I would use the right stuff usually available from your
local FBO, then there is no doubt.

Well thanks Larry.
Yes I am now a vendor. I did sell my 601 but I didn't want to. I like
most of you am on a limited budget. If I wanted to keep working on
improvements and new things I needed some cash. We are putting one on a
701. And I was thinking of doing another 601 later. But right now I am
working on one of my own design. I just want something nobody else has.

Greetings all
A while back someone asked about batteries. I went to Wall Mart and bought a motorcycle
battery made by Ever Start. Number on the battery is ES50N18LA2. Actual
dimensions are 7 7/8" W X 3 3/8" D X 6 1/4 H. I just completed the
annual inspection on my airplane and because of the installation behind the seat
(Kolb Mark III) it was necessary to pull it out to check water. I only had
to replenish with just a few drops of distilled water and there was no moisture
in the over flow bottle that I had attached to the stainless steel tie down
strap. It is a 20 Amp hour capacity so it spins the 582 very well and would
assume it could handle a 912 with equal ease. My memory is fading as to what
I paid for it but I think it was just over $30.

I picked up my 601 XL kit in February of 2005. I am
having trouble looking at the plans and the "Summary
of revisions from 04/04 to 12/04 (2nd edition 3rd
revision)." I am trying to decifer the actual
location of the wing nose ribs. I received 7 for each
side in my kit, but there are angles on the fronts of
the wing spars in 8 locations. The locations given on
line 6-W-3, number 4 of the revisions lists 170, 250,
490, 1490, 2010 and 2570. Number 6 seems to relocate
the 250 location to 330. But I have one at 310 on the
spar. And number 8 adds another nose rib at 1750, and
I have that one located on the spar also. So, is
there supposed to be 8 ribs? Or is the one at 1750
only used for the long range tanks? And I leave that
one off? There is also one at the end of the spar
around dimension 3140.

Dick you get what you pay for. I've had several EverStarts on my mowers and
about two years is max. In fact last year I had one that didn't last the
season. That's ok for a lawn mower, but not if you're gonna fly it. For
about $65 you can get a good sealed Oddesy and be done with it. Short cuts
will get you killed in this sport my friend.

bought a motorcycle battery made by Ever Start. Number on the battery is
ES50N18LA2. Actual dimensions are 7 7/8" W X 3 3/8" D X 6 1/4 H. I
just completed the annual inspection on my airplane and because of the
installation behind the seat (Kolb Mark III) it was necessary to pull it out
to check water. I only had to replenish with just a few drops of distilled
water and there was no moisture in the over flow bottle that I had attached
to the stainless steel tie down strap. It is a 20 Amp hour capacity so it
spins the 582 very well and would assume it could handle a 912 with equal
ease. My memory is fading as to what I paid for it but I think it was just
over $30.

Note this email below sent by someone else earlier in the week. I think ZAC
has made a provision for the option of two 15 gallon tanks (one on each
side) instead of the original 4 12's. I think this is a better way to go. If
you tried to use the 48 gallons you will be limited in useful load. I plan
on keeping my tanks topped off while stored for safety reasons. I think I
could always fly with 30 gallons as I and my wife are not heavy people. The
15 gallons will give me the correct amount of fuel for range without posing
a problem. Also it is easier and probably safer to have just two tanks.

If you are looking for more fuel capacity consider ZAC's new 15 gallon
tanks. This is how they did it:
"There is no change to location of the inboard ribs, the nose rib across
from rear rib 6 is moved outboard to rib station 1750, we add an extra nose
rib in line with rear rib #7. The length of the tank is increased to 1265mm"

After looking at your message again, I'm not sure there wasn't a mistake
made on your spars. I have earlier set of plans but, some of your NR's seem
to be where my RR's are. Someone at the factory may have been confused about
the new rib locations and installed your angles in the wrong set of holes.

Subject: | 601 Instrument Panel |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Leo Gates" <leogates@allvantage.com>
My thoughts on the ZAC .025 instrument panel. Probably not worth much as
this is the only airplane I have built - CH 601 HDS.
I think that those people who feel the need to increase the thickness of the
panel overlook one fact. That is, every time you cut a hole in the panel
and stick an instrument in the hole, you stiffen the panel.
FYI here is what is installed in my .025 panel that DOES NOT flex:
(1) 31/2" tach.
(6) 31/8" primary flt. inst., three are gyro inst.
(4) 2/14" engine inst.
(5) 2" engine/electrical system inst.
(1) 1" suction gauge
(1) Terra transponder - Alt. encoder is strapped on top behind the panel
(1) Terra VHF transceiver
(1) Sony AM/FM radio with CD player
(1) ignition switch
(2) Matronics trim indicators
(2) ZAC throttles
(1) ZAC choke
(1) alternator warning LED
(2) prop control toggle switches
(1) prop CB
(1) prop governor
(1) compass correction card
(1) ZAC cabin heat control knob
(2) pots. intercom vol/squelch
(1) toggle sw - music on/off to the intercom
(1) toggle sw - siren
(1) push button sw - air horn
and yes, one standard passenger warning decal
