Subject: | 701 Float Flying & Weights |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: <burkeandsusan@verizon.net>
Just curious about the realities of float flying with the 701.
I'm in the very early stages (just got the plans) and would not put the
thing on floats until probably much later, but am wondering about the
weights in the plans as they might relate to float flying. I have never
flown floats but have flown a Lake amphibian once and at this point don't
know much about the subject of float flying.
The basic question is this: If I were to install amphibious floats on a 701,
such as the Sky Shops version, weighing in at 100 lbs. each, would I be able
to carry a passenger? With the design gross at 1100 lbs., and with full
fuel leaving me with 360 to 400 lbs. for me, a passenger and baggage, what
happens when I add 200+lbs. of floats? Am I correct in my assumption that
the weight of the floats would have to be included in that 1100 lbs. gross?
If so, with me weighing in at 155 lbs. I would be right at gross weight with
the floats and could not carry a passenger. Is this correct?
There seem to be a lot of pictures of float equipped 701s out there, but I
don't know that I've seen any with two aboard.
Thoughts would be appreciated.

Burke, Am building the 701 for amphibs as well and learned about 3 airplanes
ago it's worthwhile to spend the time and money to get your butt in the airplane
you're thinking abiut spending several thousand $$ and a couple thousand hrs
on to see if it REALLY does what you want it to do.
I flew with Danny in the Skyshops demo and was duly impressed. I weighed 220 at
the time and Danny is a lot less. Aircraft DID have a controllable prop so that
clouded the results a bit. Got of the ground and water well. Was on the
step in 3-4 seconds and off the water in 15 or so. Did 8-10 full stop water landings.
Airplane was a LOT more nimble than I thought it would be.
The guys in MO. told me over the phone that the floats support their own weight
aerodynamically but I did NOT want any misunderstanding on that so I wrote Chris
a letter and he confirmed. The weight difference between the wheels and floats
is added to the gross. If you're not interested in a lot of beaching operation
the 4 wheeled float option sure flies better than the nosewheel version
due to interconnect issues on the latter. Contact me off list if you need to get
deeper. LOW&SLOW John Bolding

A restriction from towing gliders is usually specified on an amatuer built
certification in US.

Subject: | Ch 640-0038 For Sale |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Scott Moser <moscon@citcom.net>
To all Interested parties,
I have decided to sell my Zodiac CH 640 airplane as it is. I have come to the
realization that my time and finances are limited as to the projects I choose.
I currently own and fly a Cessna 172I and can not afford to build and maintain
the two aircraft. I have long range fuel tanks (2) -23 US Gallons. The Kit
consist of all airframe componets down to the tires and seatbelts etc,,,.
My cost are: $24,800.00 for complete kit including fuel systems; Additional
cost I paid are $1,736.00 sales tax; $900.00 long range fuel tanks; $2,000.00
tail components factory built ; $1,000.00 upgraded fueline (stratoflex SS braided
hoses and fittings) plus some tools. All of these items total $30,436.00.
I am asking for the cost of the kit only $24,800.00. Buyer must arrange to pickup
or ship. This airplane is an great cross country IFR capable platform.
Top Speed with an O-360 is 167mph; Cruise is 154 mph according to Zenair LTD in
Midland Ontario. Stall is 30mph with full flaps and 40 mph no flaps
The aircraft is in the following status:
1) The right wing is about 80% complete with the aileron bellcrank assembly,
control rod and the cables installed. Both left and right ailerons are assembled
but not installed.
2) The horizontalstabilizer/elevator and /vertical fin/rudder are factory
built and complete with wiring installed.
Digital pics can be sent to anyone wishing to have them.
Regards To All,
Scott Moser

I was just visiting the Wingsforum and was really shocked at the non-privation.
The last Zenith post was Feb 20. I see no reason why we can't use both. I
really like this one, but two would be better. I like the Wingsforum because
of the ability to add attachments and html. I know you can do it here too, but
I sorta like it all together in one post. I used to be on the Rotorcraft forum
and there was always activity, sometimes it wasn't to my liking, but it was
interesting and constant. Soon as I think of something interesting to start
a conversion I will post it here and on the wingsforum also. Right now I'm brain
dead.
P.S. I still got an engine for sale.

I'm looking for a good hole-punch. I know I've seem a deep throated one in a
magazine somewhere but, of course now I can't seem to locate the ad. Any one
have a suggestion? I've done a quick search but can't find one. A@S doesn't
seem to have one either?
