Dear Clive
Thank you very much for the advice and info. I am beginning to come to the
conclusion that the way forward is to build to plans with the Rotax but
utilise the forward opening canopy.
Do you know of anyone in the uk who is building from scratch as I would like
to pick their brains as to the sourcing of several items.
Thanks also about the tip of the archive, that has proved really useful.
Many thanks again Regards Phil

Hi Phil,
as Randy already said, only consider the forward hinging canopy. The plane
is fine as it is. Really no need to change. The plans are not perfect, but
they are okay. Just stick to them and you will end up with a really great
airplane.
Happy building

This posting is only to introduce a new product and provide information which I
will be marketing in the very near future. It is primarily for information purposes,
for prices and available, please e-mail or call me. I hope everyone
sees it as filling a void for a needed product rather than using this list for
financial gain. This will be the first and last posting promoting the product,
other than to answer questions.
A 701 scratch builder friend in Hot Spring, Arkansas twisted my arm the other day
to build him some fiberglass fuel tanks for his 701. He is building the plug
(1 tank, which I can make a mold out of). It will be the same shape as the
wing and extend to the rear spar. In fact he is using main ribs to fashion the
tank. The cross piece behind the stock ZAC tank will not be used. There will
be plenty of reinforced areas which can be used for vents, fuel injection return
lines, balance tubes, drains, and feed lines. It will have an indented
place for a top mount sending unit and well as a filler tube. They will be uni-fit
tanks, in other words they can be used on either side or in four tank configuration.
A chemical and heat resistant resin will be used, it is called Isophthalic
Polyester. We estimate that they will hold between 13 and 14 gallons
each. I will have the exact capacity when I build the first one.
Since I am going to the work of building a mold, I figured I might as will try
and make a dime, so I will market these tanks. I will not supply any hardware,
fittings, sending units or gauges, however I will direct my customers to where
they can purchase them. I will supply the filler tubes and caps. I now have
standing orders for 12 units. If anyone is interested, e-mail me and I will
give you prices and put you on the list. I will say this, they will be a lot better
and cheaper than the stock tanks.

I have one piece of information to contribute re increasing the span of
the tailplane (horizontal stabilizer) on the CH601HD. This stems from a
conversation I had with Chris Heintz at our Recreational Aircraft
Association (Canada) meeting where he was our guest speaker. I asked
Chris if it was a good idea to increase the span of the tailplane. He was
very clear that it was not necessary if his plans were followed. The
matter had arisen in a kit planes magazine article where the British
authors said it was necessary. BUT, Chris said this arose because the
builders had made other reasonably major modifications to the design. If
the original design is followed, the increased span is NOT necessary. In
flying our own 601HD, my son and I have never perceived any need to modify
the tailplane/elevator. Every time you modify the design, you increase
the build-time, and introduce a couple of question marks. I believe I am
interpreting Chris Heintz's words correctly. But if you are still in
doubt, why not contact ZAC directly?

Dear Experts,
Today has been less than perfect. Not only did I strip the gears on my
angle drill (I really should have know better), but we tried to fit the 701 cowl.
As far as we could see it simply does not fit. With the lower cowl in
proper position, and tight against the skin around the firewall, the top cowl
lacks 3/4" of fitting into the "joggle" on the lower cowl, at the rear end.
I am not sure if I am making this clear, but I wonder if this has been a
common problem, or previously unheard of. If anyone has encountered this
problem, what solutions have been found?
Thanks,
Jim Greenough,

Sharing my impressions of Kit Log Pro.
When I started this project last fall. I bought Kit Log Pro. Their website said
that you could use it for a web based log. I wanted a web page for this project
so I went ahead and bought it. I have to say I haven't been very impressed.
What I bought did not support web based logs. I was told that it would in
the next revision and that it would be available after the first of the year.
It is now May and still no upgrade for 1.7. They did come out with 2.0 a while
back but no ability to upgrade or transfer data. I just looked at the web
site and now they want $10 to upgrade once they have the product. Who knows
when that will be.
Bottom line it hasn't been worth the money I spent. I find it difficult to transfer
photos and hard to sort. When I go back and try to review what I did in
the past it comes up with errors.
Bottom line. If you are starting and thinking about using this. Take a good look.
Word, Excel, and Front Page are easier. I have found that my web page is
a better record and the other resources are just as available on the web.
Other than that building is going well. I just primed the wing ribs and spars.
I am very impressed with ZAC's kit.
Cheers
Matt

This may sound weird, but will it fit inside the skins instead of outside the skins?
I'm not sure if that's the way it was intended, but I think ZAC's XL is
done that way.

The 601HD cowl fits inside the skins. It might be worth a look at the 701 plans
to see if it does.
