No you don't need them on the top and bottom, there are more cross "L"
angles used on the top and bottom. Check out my page on it and you can see
the pictures, http://www.angelfire.com/un/ch701/xbraces.html.

Thanks for the heads up Roy.
After your mishap I removed my main gear leg pants and looked for
cracks...I didn't see any obvious ones but then again I haven't
completely stripped off all the crud and closely inspected with a mirror
yet...I was thinking of buying a crack detection kit and testing for
sure. $25 sounds like cheap insurance..:)
Glad your back in the air.

Subject: Zenith-List: N601RT returns to the sky! (repair from gear
failure info)
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "royt.or@netzero.com"
--> <royt.or@netzero.com>
I made the following entry in my airframe log book today:
Replaced all three gear legs, bungies, and stop plates with new
components from Zenith. New gear legs and lower bearing supports were
industrial chrome plated. Floating nut plates mounted on aluminum strip
were used for bolts securing lower bearing supports. Nyoil bearing from
Zenith were installed for top and bottom each gear leg. The nose gear
Nyoil bearings were installed per 601XL plans. The main gear bearings
were installed under the original 601HDS bearings. Greased all gear leg
bearing surfaces. Replaced left brake caliper and the lower 12 inches of
brake line. Removed damaged area of left bottom wing skin and replaced
with new skin. Replaced left wing root fairing and riblett. Removed step
fairing, damaged steps, installed new steps and reinstalled step
fairing. Installed new tires on all three wheels. Installed new brake
shoes on both wheels. Aircraft repairs completed; aircraft is airworthy
and ready to return to service.
The new gear is more compliant, "softer" over bumps than my original
installation. I expect that powder coating on my original gear legs and
having brakes that really work both contributed to my original failure.
I think the powder coating increased the friction between the gear legs
and the aluminum bearings. Search the archives for "N601RT & defective"
for more information of original failure.
Zenith changed the thickness of the 2"x2" plate at the end of the gear
leg in version 4 of the 601HD/601HDS plans. The new plate is 3/16"
thick. My original plates were 1/8" thick. I identified two or three
other planes that had similar failures to mine. I was happy with the way
Zenith handled getting me replacement parts.

Roy

Just a follow-up,
After much fretting over the weekend about the twist in my stabilzer (7mm from
left rear to right leading edge) and multiple phone calls to local resources,
I was able to reduce the twist to ~2mm, which I can certainly live with. (I removed
all the clecos, weighted both ends of the stab with padded weights then
cleco'd every hole starting from the twisted end. after a few tense moments,
the weights were removed and only minimal twist was found)
So I just wanted to thank everyone for suggestions and encouragement (especially
the suggestion to have my contractor come out and repour the garage floor LEVEL)

Yup it sure does, I've had it happen to me!
Luckily it happened on the ground so I got to witness the stream of fuel
running out those little tubes first hand, and it didn't stop until I turned
off the engine.
This didn't happen on my 601 but on my ultralight which was running a Rotax
503 with the dual Bing 54 carbs. Those carbs use a similar float needle shut
off arrangement as our altitude adjusting carbs, so I believe it could
happen on a 601 as well.
The engine had sat idle for a time and may have gotten some dirt in the fuel
system causing the float shut off valve to stick open. Then when I started
the engine fuel ran freely from both carb overflow tubes. Not just a drip,
drip, drip, but a stream as if one were siphoning a fuel can with them. And
as I said the stream of fuel only stopped once I turned off the engine.
So to this day I'm just a little leery of having those overflow tubes just
hanging there over top my exhaust system.

This are the facts I have experienced and saw myself (and never witnessed r had
a problem of gas driping):
Yes, some did modified the tubes, only one serious problem: about 6 years ago a
pilot in a Rans, from a club near here, was fataly injured... he panic and blow
his dificult emergency landing when he lost power. 2 years later (in the
Rotax Seminar) we found out by photos that he modified the tubes (longer ones).
Engine on top, had no cowling.
Several aborted or landed without problem, about 6 minor incindents in 8 years
with few landing gears bent and fortunate minor bruises... Everything was blamed,
from our altitude, to gasoline, passing trough brands of oil, spark plugs,
even the Rotax factory, you name it... "Those tubes have to be longer!!
They are over the mufflers" lots of us said...
At that time I had a 503 (2 cycle) so my plane was not in danger :-)
Until the simple tubes where insolated (4 years ago) in the first visit/Seminar
from Kodiak Representatives.
Fortunate, We were the club with more Rotax engines in Mexico and the only one
with a dedicated mechanic for all the fleet, so they wanted to know us, What
a party!...
Since then every other year we have a Rotax Seminar for all pilots that want to
assist, There come pilots from several states and clubs from Mexico, the seminars
are based in Preventive and Corrective Mantainance. I have taken one each
of them: two and 4 cycle engines.
This is my thought.
The tubes are continuty of the carburator bowl vent, this is a fact.
They are there there just in case the gasoline will overflow... When? when the
needle will not close.
IF We filter the gasoline with a Chamois or prefiltering the gas before filling
the tank, then an inline filter and then a gascolator (or visceversa), and
we drain daily and change the filters over hours mantainance... Posibilties of
having a strange particle in the needle? As close to remote as impossible.
Driping with diferent altitudes, never in our airplanes... We fly at all the
altitudes possible because or our flying area:
We are at 5,000 ft ASL. the Pacific coast (Sea Level) is about 1:30 hrs flying
from our aerodrome. we go there several times a year, at least 10 planes/month
or more (if mathematically can be said like this :-), some have summer house
there...
To get to the coast from here, we need to climb over the Sierra pass, up to 10,500
ft ASL , never have noticed (non of us) any strange smell or any minimal
missfire... Just like swiss watches.
The only time we "hear" all the possible strange noises our airplanes can make,
is once a year when we go to the BAJA... We fly about 30 to 80 minutes (depending
the direction and speed of the wind) over water (the Cortez Gulf)...
But most noises are normal, just that we had never paid atention to them...
before :-)
We are homebuilders, I am not a purist, but this is one thing I advise to leave
as is.
Believe me, the first time I know of any failure (fire or smell or engine quit)
pointing this vents, I will be the first to tell the list (if is not my case,
knock wood:-).
Also if I know of any change for the vents from Rotax, I will inmediatly will notify
you, believe me.
Saludos
Gary Gower.

Gary,
Good point.
People often ask: when does gas come out of the tube? I say that I have
only heard that IF the float chamber would overflow (in case the float wont
float and needle stays open) would there ever be dripping gas. You have
confirmed that this is not a common situation. I wonder if gas has EVER
exited out this tube in their actual experience (please come forward with
your experience). So point well taken... not worth extending the tube at
all and maybe just LEAVE IT ALONE.

Bob,
I've got a not ever used Val Com TSO VHF Tranceiver. It was initially put
in a KR2 but never used, the man's KR2 was sold.
It has the mounting shelf, wiring harness to mic/headphone jacks, manual in
its original factory box. It doesnt fit into my S-12. I'm advertising it on
barnstormers for $ 570 but to anyone in the club or I know I'll let it go for
$ 525. It cost about $750 @ most avionics stores. Nice unit picture included.

Hi List
Just wanted to let you know N4036A had its maiden flight yesterday. I didn't
fly and was nervous as could be. Test pilot is 77years old and cool as a
cucumber. He never even broke a sweat. He said the plane flew great. Was up
for 30 min. Preliminary figures show: 100mph @5000 rpms 4500' MSL plane
started to nibble at a stall at about 48 to 50mph in mild turbulence All
temps within limits. With power pulled back plane drops 1000' per min.
Landing approach was a little wobbly (winds had picked up) but touchdown was
smooth. After 2 years work it was a spectacular sight to behold. I'm still
grinnin and havent even been up yet. Have to finish up my PPL and then I'm a
free bird. Thanks to all for your advice and ideas and for those still
building its all worth it. I still have to fine tune the idle which is still
a little rough.
Happy Trails

Hello Kelly,
That is exactly why they are there...
It sure will happen in any negleted (sp?) or poorly mantained engine, remember
is not your Jetsky, is your airplane engine, at least remove the carb bowls
and change all the gasoline if not flown for several months.
Read the Rotax manual for your engine once.
I am serious, your life and our sport fredom (all over the world) is in danger
with careless "pilots", and the media... Hope you take this in the positive
and friendly way...
Please... Give better mantainace and care to your 601 and hopely you will never
see that gasoline driping.
Saludos
Gary Gower.

First I must admit to a major error on my part. I previously reported 130
MPH cruise. I'll blame it on first flight euphoria, but I made a real DUMB
math calculation. True max. cruise is 120 MPH. Here are some results, after
repeated flights: Alt. 3,000' MSL. Figures are: (Manifold pressure in " of
Hg)(RPM - engine)(TAS - MPH)(Fuel consumption - US Gal. per Hr.).
1. (30" - full throttle)(5,500 RPM)(120 MPH)(5 GPH)
2. (27")(5,000 RPM)(99 MPH)(3.9 GPH)
3. (26.5")(4,800 RPM)(89 MPH)(3.6 GPH)
4. (26.0")(4,300 RPM)(85 MPH)(2.7 GPH)
Stall speed 51 MPH ;-)
I shot three landings with an 80 degree cross wind, 18 K gusting to 28 K
(ASOS report from a field 15 miles away). No problem - she is solid.
Test flew her to 1325 Lbs. I wouldn't intentionally load her any higher
than 1250 Lbs. She has a VERY narrow pitch envelope at 1325 Lbs.
I installed Ivoprop's electronic prop governor - what a hoot! More than
well worth the $300. My thanks to Mr. Ivo.
I installed Zenith's landing/taxi light kit in the left leading edge -
outboard of the wing leading edge fuel tank. Zenith recommended standard AC
GE lamps. These are about $25 each and only rated for 25 hours of life. I
bought a pair of off road halogen lights from JC Whitney, $15 for the pair.
They came with 55 watt bulbs - I replaced the bulbs. I bought coated bulbs,
the kind that penetrate fog and haze. The taxi light is still 55 watts but
I put in a 110 watt bulb for the landing light. Oh yes, I discarded the
plastic housings and mounting hardware. I shot 5 landings last night. ASOS
reported 4 miles visibility with haze. The lights mounted way out on the
wing caused no glare. I could tell they were on, in the air, because I
could see the beams penetrating the haze. Landings were easy, our 3,000'
grass strip was well lit up from about 3/4 mile out and on landing.
BTW while flight testing I wondered what would happen if I lost my electric
fuel pumps. I have leading edge fuel tanks only. A fuel pump mounted in
each wing, inboard of the tank and gravity fed from the tank. I have a
third electric pump mounted under the front part of the pilot seat - just
aft of the spar. This pump (boost) is connected to the outlet of the fuel
selector valve (Andair, left, right, both and off). The boost pump output is
connected between the engine driven pump and the carbs. Back to flight
testing. At 1,000 over the field, I put the fuel selector on the right tank
and turned off the right fuel pump - left and boost were not on either. I
started a normal climb, with repeated S turns, to 6,000 feet. The fuel
pressure remained steady and the engine was smooth and happy. I repeated
this with the fuel selector on the left tank. Same result. Why not? I was
running on auto gas and OAT was 80 degrees at 1K and 55 degrees at 6K. Oil
and coolant temps 190 warming to 220. I have no fire sleeve etc. on rubber
fuel lines. Possible that vapor lock could occur this summer with 100
degree Texas temps?
I'll try this again on a hotter day.

Larry how did you know how many pound force to use? Also have you got your
plane in the air to try the flaps in the air?
