Dear Thread Friends, I went through the EAA folks on Friday looking for
insurance for "my never been flown yet" obsession and the least quote I got
was for
$ 2005. per year. Two others were even higher ! Seems about twice too high
to me. Maybe I'm not saying the correct things to the broker. Who has a
policy
out there that is more reasonable than $ 167 per month ? Hope to hear
something soon, Best regards, Bill

Hi Mark,
I sure will-- The probe is permanently mounted but I haven't made final
installation of the gauge cause I didn't how much I would like it. I'll
send pix when I get finished with install.
Thanks

Dear Thread Friends, two things have come to my attention that may help out.
First, on the position light kit that ZAC sells with the kit. My electric
stuff installer put in a 3 amp circuit breaker. In operation it pops after
5-10 seconds. Did the step down test and it needs a 5 amp breaker. Second, on
the upper longron splices at the rear of the baggage compartment. The plans are
not as clear about which rivets to use on the outside for the side and top
skins. Looks like A-4s, but I was told by a good friend they were A-5s. Called
Roger at ZAC and sure enough all three rows of eight rivets are A-5 size. One
row on the inside and both rows on the outside. I drilled mine out yesterday
and replaced. I am sure anyone would know to do this, but if you drill and
replace these rivets only do a couple at a time so you don't lose hull and frame
integrity. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

First question. The updated drawings are not usually online though they are
occasionally. The update cost $50 from Zenith.
Second question. I've been told to ground it to the airframe. I've done all
of mine as close to the light as possible. On the rudder light I am bringing
the ground into the fuselage and not grounding in the rudder.
--> Zenith-List message posted by: DeanMFord@aol.com
Two questions:
regarding 601XL
The on line builders resource indicates that there have been changes made to
drawing 6-W-1. I was assuming that I could find the updated drawing on
line,
but was not able to locate it. If someone would assure me that the drawings
are there I will continue looking. Surely I am not expected to purchase new
drawings every time they are changes!
Second,
When running electrical circuits such as for the wing tip lights or lights
on
the rudder, is it okay just to run a single conductor to supply the 12 V and
use the airframe as the ground path or is that a bad practice?

Have any of you had a choice of deductibles on the hull? I was only offered $100
and thought a higher deductible would lower my rate, but was told I had no choice.
Thanks!

List
I found an actuator from DuffNorton # TMD01-1906-4. www.duffnorton.com
They quoted $179.00 each, 2 week availability. It has an 100 lb capacity, 4
inch stroke, with adjustable limit switches. 300 lb static capacity, 25% duty
cycle, 8.75 inches long center to center of end pin holes. Best part is the 40
inches per minute (66 inches per second). If I'm not mistaken it looks like
the flaperon control lever only moves 32 mm or 1 1/4 ". If my brain is working
correctly that would be 2 seconds for full flaps. You could get away with a 2"
stroke model which would be #TMD01-1906-2.
Any thoughts? Also how does the Ray Allen indicators sense movement to relate
to its flap position indicator?

This might be a crazy question, but has anybody built
an XL without flaps? What I mean is, without moveable
flaps. You obviously need the flaps to complete the
wings, but just attach them to hard points and leave
them. I got my medical back, so I don't need the
plane to qualify under the LSA, so landing speed is
not an issue. Less installation hassle, fewer moving
parts. I don't know what got me thinking about this.
Any thoughts?

Subject: | engine baffles: did you make your own? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Agstore" <jay@agstore.net>
I am back to work on installing my O-360 in my 801 and I am wondering if
you guys made your own engine baffles or bought them from Zenith (or
elsewhere)? My O-360 is used and I did receive a set of used baffles
with it, but they are too short (some cracks and corrosion too) and
therefore unusable.
I found templates on the eaa.org site
(http://members.eaa.org/home/homebuilders/authors/bingelis/Baffling%20Yo
ur%20Lycoming%20Part%201.html), but I have not figured out how to print
them to scale. I did attempt to use an old baffle as a template, but
the new one did not turn out very pretty with tin snips (I do not have a
bandsaw).
My options seem to be: 1)buy a bandsaw to make cutting easier, faster,
and more professional looking 2)buy the baffles prefabricated from
somewhere
I am curious what other builders did for their baffles.

For simple lighting circuits, it's OK to use the metal frame as ground but,
for the rudder, make sure you run a separate ground wire at least back to
the fuselage or use a bonding wire to bond the rudder to the fuselage. Don't
rely on the hinges to provide a good ground path.
For your avionics, gauges and anything with large current draw, you should
run separate ground wires to a common ground point. Your engine and battery
should also be grounded to this common point.

In a properly designed fuel system there should be no way that water can get
to your fuel filter. The filter should be the last thing before the carbs
and if water gets that far you're in big trouble anyway.

FYI, perhaps not directly to your question, but LSA stall speeds are "clean"
(ie w/o flaps)so your plane equipped with flaps or not is not relevant to
qualification for a sport pilot.

It may be a personal thing but I would suggest against hard fitting the
flaps. The XL is a faster 601 then all the rest and for better short
field performance you would regret not having the flaps available. Plus
there is that re-sale thingy.

If I do another I won't install the flaps. The only time I used them was
testing. They make for a bumpy ride coming in. I could get in to my 900'
strip with out them just fine. But that's just me.

Subject: | 701 with 85 Continental |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Dave and Pam Fisher <dpfisher@scottsbluff.net>
Hi Roland and list,
I'm building a 701 with an 80 HP Continental. I can't answer as to how
much of your 140 stuff you can use. I suspect that some modification will
be necessary. I am sure that both your engine and mine are on the heavy
side for a 701 and anything we can do to keep the weight down up front is a
good idea. I'm using a light wooden prop, no electric, no header tank, and
bare minimum VFR instruments. the battery for my electric trim will be in
the rear fuselage and will be as large as necessary for weight and
balance. I made my own engine mount- Cub style, positioned as close as
possible to the fire wall.
With that said I think the 85 will be a good engine for the 701. What are
your plans with regard to the fuel system? Any advice from anyone with a
Continental would be welcome. Is a boost pump advisable? Has anyone
plumbed their 701 with Continental direct from the wing tanks, Cessna style?
Thanks,
Dave , 701 with 80 Continental, 90% and holding

If you're building the kit, installing the flap motor, etc. may
add <~1% to the build time. No reason not to install them.
Like Mark says, some folks feel uncomfortable without flaps.
As to moving parts - like Brett's, mine don't move (I don't use them).
My stall speed is < 50 mph IAS without flaps.
And I routinely make the first exit wherever I land.
(It surprises ATC - I'm often referred to as an RV in the pattern.)
If I use 1000 feet of runway I didn't make a good landing.
