I first noticed some deformation in the eye-bolt attach plate which is part
of the lower hinge assembly... But this was after I'd been using the rear
tie down ring to pull the aircraft backwards into it's parking spot... That
ring is designed to handle a downward pull with not too much tangental
component.
Which is what got me thinking about tiedowns, when someone else mentioned
how they maneuvered their aircraft by the tail for parking, etc..
Just something to watch out for. The aircraft is wellmade to handle the
design stresses, but occaisionally we discover new ways to impose
non-designed loads and stresses.. ;-)

Good Morning Bob:
I'm using an actuator that is very similar to the one you are looking at. It does
not have adjustable limit switches, however you can add longer or shorter
(or better yet - adjustable) arms on the assembly that will use up the full travel
of the actuator. If you want to see photos of what I'm talking about let
me know and I'll send you some of my flap actuator setup that is adjustable to
use up all the travel.

I was taught the standard way to tie down the tail would be
Bungee cord the stick full back and tie the tail down at the tail wheel,
with about 4 inches of slack. You don't want it tugging at the tail,
just to hold it down in an emergency. The wings must be tied taught
though, no slack at all.

http://www.mooneymite.com/articles/favrholdtgbalancingprops.htm
On the topic of Prop Balancing, here is an inexpensive way to get a smoother
running engine. It was submitted by Ben Favrholdt, N66MX, of Porterville,
California. Note that he is talking about his wood propeller.
Cut a piece of aluminum, making a disk about 3 inches wide and 6 inches
long. Glue a suction cup on one side of the disk. You can use one from
Aircraft Spruce, P/N 13-00088 at $2.95. See photo below.
Next, attach a spring steel reed at the top end of the disk. A coping saw
blade will probably work okay. Attach an adjustable weight on the reed.
Mount the assembly by suction to the face of one of the instruments on the
panel.
In flight, you will see a deflection of the reed due to normal vibration. By
experimenting with different RPM's and weight positions on the reed, you
should be able to find a combination where there will be harmonic resonance,
where the reed will deflect to a much greater extent. Note these settings.
Now paint the outer two or three inches of one blade of the propeller.
Obviously, if the deflections are now greater than before, you painted the
heavier side of the prop. Now work on the other blade until you get minimum
deflection.
It seems simple, but it works. I used a spray can to paint, and doesn't take
much paint since there is a long arm and requires little weight to have an
effect.
I don't know if this will work on a metal prop because of the larger mass

I would be very interested in seeing how you handled the travel of the
actuator. How much does your flap rod travel? It appears in the 701 to be about
2"
for full travel. Thanks for your input.

This is partly to be expected...its a light weight plane with a
relatively large engine so yes a firm application of the right foot is
to be expected.
So are you also talking about the nose wheel or is this when the nose
wheel has lifted off?
Do you have a long runway where you can pull back to cruise say 5' above
the ground?...You should be able to fly pretty centered at cruise...If
not adjust the rudder cable.

My 601HD C-DIUS made very brief low-level hop at the airfield today.
We're going through an initial workout before a real first flight.
Things are pretty good. I have a couple of things I needs to fix. My
side-mounted float in the header tank developed a leak :( Out comes the
Proseal...
Anyhow, the test pilot mentioned that he needed a fair amount of right
rudder to keep her straight. I can concur on this during my taxi testing
this week. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I try and adjust
with the turnbuckles or should I install a trim tab?
We haven't flown it for real yet, so this might be a moot point once it
gets airborne.
I'm hoping for a real flight this weekend once I fix the leak and a
couple of really small things.

Trevor,
The torque you feel on high speed taxi will lessen in flight once you've
gotten the airspeed up
so I'd leave the rudder tab for after flight evaluations. Depending on
your access to your tank,
I'd suggest you drain below the leaking area, let dry and apply an epoxy
or JB Weld to the outside
seam or joint where your seepage occurs. Either will do the job, but
proseal is possibly going to
give you problems later if it becomes unstuck from your tank walls.
Good luck

I saw the movie, just for the aircraft..which by the way, isn't a 701!
Its a Savannah, a match hole construction kit clone of the Zenith. But back to
your question, they were playing cute on the movie, they made it look like two
passengers from one aircraft but really if you look close it was two aircraft.

Hi Bob:
2" seems about right on the 601XL from what I can remember. The trick is to lengthen
the arms (the one on the flap control rod and one on the actuator) to a
point where it uses up the full travel of the actuator. Instead of using the
flat, steel arms, I used tubing with a nut welded on the end so I could make
the end longer or shorter. I got the geometry really close by measurements and
mock-ups, but I wanted it to be adjustable, so here's where I started:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_18_04_Flaplever.JPG
I then made an attachment that would screw into this nut - basically a bolt with
a piece of pipe welded to it. I then cut a "U" out of the pipe so it would
fit on a rod end and drilled a hole across it- here's the beginning of that process:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_21_04_Adjuster.JPG
Next is the step that made it all work. I used another piece of tubing (3/4" I
think) that fit over the end of the actuator connection point. I drilled a hole
so it could be attached to the actuator. I figured this length as close as
I could get it, then welded bolt to the end and screwed a rod-end into it for
further adjustment.
If I'm not explaining it well, maybe this will help - take a look at this photo
with all the parts on my work table:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_21_04_Flaps.JPG
Here's a photo of the actuator in the "up" position:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_21_04_Flaps2.JPG
And here it is in the "down" position:
http://www.cooknwithgas.com/11_27_04_Actuator.JPG
If you take a look at the last photo - the shiny part is the actuator travel that
goes inside the actuator on full up. The black part after that is the extension
I made to help with the geometry. Making this extension longer and shorter
will affect where it stops and starts. The other arm coming out of the flap
tube will reduce and increase the travel by making it longer or shorter respectively.
If you get it close on the mock-up, there's not much adjustment necessary.
It works out just right and cuts off automatically at the end of travel in both
directions. A position indicator will be installed next to finish it off.
Having my little gas-welder setup has really made the difference on being able
to put these parts together, so if you haven't put together a gas-welding setup,
I recommend it.
I hope this helps,

Thanks Larry, others have contacted me off-list and said pretty much
the same thing about the rudder.
My test pilot got it off the ground about 3' and it looked fine. He
only mentioned the rudder issue while ground taxiing. The flight was
too brief to see if it went away.
I've drained the tank enough below the line and I was going to do
just what you suggested.
I'll know more in the next couple of days when we resume testing.

Negative on adjusting for the yaw on takeoff, Trevor. Perfectly normal.
You may have to adjust when you have established your cruise flight
condition and find some crabbing.
Good luck with that first flight.

David,
I'm pleased you asked because I've not yet considered valve stems, but
for removing the
forward half of the pant similar to the ZAC design.

Rodney, I am just now in the process of ordering a set of main gear from Chip Erwin
at Czech Air Works. When I asked him initially, he quoted a 20 pound weight
saving, and roughly $950. The bucks may fluctuate, but the weight saving (I'm
also using Corvair power) sure sounded good. You may want to czech (pun intended)
with him, too.

I have been lurking for quite some time and have gotten a lot of good
information from this list. I am about to order the remainder of 601 XL
kit and am trying to decide on Zenith maingear or Grove. Searched the
archives and didn't get enough info to decide. Any suggestions? Is
there anyone that has the Grove gear installed and what are the thoughts
on using it. I will be using nose gear from Zenith with possible wheel
change. Thanks
