Hello Listers,
I am getting going on my rudder kit and have followed the zinc chromate string
closely. I want to protect the inside of my airplane as I build and understand
zinc chromate is not compatible with many top coat finishes. It makes sense
to me to stick with one type of primer system that will protect the interior
as well as exterior and provide a good mating surface for the top coat on the
exterior. Also, most of the local automotive parts stores are not even carrying
zinc chromate anymore. What primer systems have others used or recommend?
Sincerely,
Matt Keyes

Matt,
Can't speak for compatibility of zinc chromate with all final finshes, but the
chromate can be found in several places not normally considered.
Mom-and-Pop hardware stores, non-chain paint outlets, firms that sell steel & sheet
metal for the building trades, etc, are just a few.
Normally in gallons, it comes in yellow and red. I found a store with five one-gallon
cans at $19 each. They'd had it in stock for some time and seemed excited
that I was interested. Also, no Haz-Mat shipping charges.
I probably didn't need a whole gallon, but considering whatever new laws the tree-huggers
might enact next, I got one. The can was still properly sealed, contents
good as new.
May have been slightly politically incorrect in my comments, but that's life in
"Dubya" land.

Zed/701/R912/90+%

Am I expecting too much from my cooling system? When I drive my car, the
water temp is regulated pretty much on the T-setting of the thermostat...
the point where the T-stat valve opens and closes.
In my airplane the temp rides at some higher temp where the cooling system
is running 'full open' and can't bring down the temp any more. This is a
problem while taxying especially on a hot day. Let's say I just landed and
taxxied in and then want to go out again. The temp while taxiing in will
have maxxed out to 210 degrees or slightly more, so now when I start up to
taxii out, there's no way to cool the engine ....
I'm interested in other experiences with water-cooled engines - especially
the auto conversions (i.e. Rotaxes have a hybrid air/water cooling that
might give different results)...
Does anyone have such a great cooling system on their auto-conversion engine
that engine temp is a 'non issue' just like when driving a car? I.e. No
concerns while taxiing; cruising with temps around 190 or less? .... If so,
how did you achieve that?
thanks,

Thanks very much for sharing how you did your setup for the flap actuator.
The 701 is set up different but maybe the adjustment idea can be used. Thanks
again, I know how much time it takes to answer in the format that you did. It
was in a very logical sequence and the pictures are worth thousands of words. I
don't have the gas welding set up but I am good with mig welding, would that
be OK to use for parts like the ones you did?

Bob:
I'm glad the photos were helpful. With the wire-feed or "MIG" welder I have, I
am unable to weld thin chromoly with success. It burns through it a lot and
I can't make sure I'm getting a good weld when it does stick. My MIG welder has
it's place with thicker material, but not with applications such as this.
You may have better skills and/or better equipment than I have since mine is a
low-end wire-feed welder. I've tried it with flux-core wire and also argon gas
for flux on plain wire.
In my opinion a small gas-welding outfit makes a great addition to any shop. I
prepared an article for KitPlanes on setting up such an outfit that was published
in two parts in Dec. 04 and January of this year. I'd be glad to send you
the M.S. Word version or a photocopy of that document if you are interested
in learning to gas weld. I'm no expert, but I documented the process of obtaining
the bottles, having them filled, selecting a torch, etc. Once you have the
ability to gas weld, you won't use your MIG much anymore on thin metal.
I will add that the MIG welder does an excellent job of tacking parts in place
(without melting the aluminum below) prior to removing the part and gas-welding
on parts such as the entry steps and engine mount.

Grant,
My Rabbit diesel radiator was rather inefficient because the air bunched
up in front of the radiator head and hoses and would essentially just go
around it. I added an intake that smoothly separates air flow around
the intake hoses and the radiator head. The intake also diverts air
below and louvers add a bit to the negative draft. I don't have any
cooling issues on a long taxi on a really hot day, even with the
radiator 38" back from the firewall.. Would have liked to stay internal
with my cooling, but I wanted to solve the problem so many seemed to
have with the standard ZAC design.
See picture of radiator at this address. Other pics are on the
completions page.

Well you don't need to use Zinc Chromate on the outside of the plane,
only internal parts. I use Zinc Phosphate myself, Wicks has been
stocking it (though only after my request). I have heard good things
about it, and it is not nearly as dangerous (still protect yourself
though) as chromate.

I bought my 601 HDS kit in 1992, including the bungees. I just replced them
last month. They had streched so that with the plane parked and empty the
gear tops were about 1/2 inch above the wing. This had no effect on the gear
as far as I could tell. I always grease em on (in my dreams).

Malcolm,
When I originally contacted him, all I asked about was main gear. Since then, I've
refined it to main gear less tires and tubes, and added the attachment brackets,
so I don't yet know what the final price will be. I received an order
confirmation from his assistant, and she will get back to me shortly with the
invoice total, and air freight costs, which I'll share with the List.

Fred asked: "I am ready to install my landing gear on my HDS. The kit was originally

The bungies on N601RT looked good when I replaced them due to the landing gear
failure. The bungies had over 300 hours of flying and over 400 landings when I
replaced them. My kit was purchased about 1995 and the first flight was 2003.
Zenith now has information and parts to install floating nutplates mounted on an
aluminum strip. This replaces the individual nuts on the 28 bolts which hold
the lower main gear bearing support in place. I strongly recommend installing
these or some other mechanism to allow replacing the bungies without requiring
access to the nuts from the top of the wing.

Hi Grant, I would say that so far mine is a "non
issue", but I did not live through the hi-temp of the
summer.
I wend to Bromont for dinner with my 601. Water temp
stayed at 187. I noticed that in some situations, it
reaches 210, but I'll say that below 220, I'm not that
nervous (the coolant is good for 232 I think).
Oil temps is a bit of another thing. With my previous
EA-81, Oil temps was always good staying between 200
and 220. With the new engine, it was between 245 and
258 so I decided to install an oil cooler. I did that
this week and this evening, oil temp was at 170-180
and topped at 199. I feel it is a bit cool (people
tell me it should be above 200 deg). I may block part
of the cooler with duct tape but I'll wait for a
warmer day before doing this.

I'm starting to prepare my shop, and one of the things I need to do is add
some lighting above the area where I will put my 4' x 12' table. Does
anyone on the list have any suggestions for the best overhead lighting to
use, or are the trusty old 4' shop lights good enough?

Hi Michel
I don't think that your oil temps are too cold.
A lot of our big diesels run at 80c which is 176f.
They have giant rads so the temp never goes higher
no matter how hard I run them.
Some may claim you need it at 212 to get rid of the
water from combustion blow by.
If you take some water and put it on a 176 degree
hot plate it will not last there very long.
It is not likely to sludge up the oil at these temps.

You are a bit further along than I am, but I got a wacko idea that I've
yet to implement so I don't really know if its feasible.
Most of the shop has the typical 4 foot flourecent fixtures. Over the
long work bench though I want to put in a overhead track that will suspend
some sort of a rolling trolly. On that trolly will be two 2 foot
flourescent fixtures plus a halogen spot light. The spot light will be on
an articulated arm so I can put it whereever I want. In my better Rube
Goldberg moments I try to figure out how to get an air line attached to
the trolly. And a power strip. And, ooo! ooo! a vaccuum.
If I really do get the shop tricked out like I want, I won't have the
money or energy to build a 701.

Thanks for the article, slow to load (dial up) but worth the wait. The torch
looks nice, I think I saw this at Sun n Fun this year. Another tool to add to
the collection.
Thanks again

Yes if you get enough. I used 3 fixtures above each long side, maybe a
little toward the inside.

Mine are "New" 4' shop lights. I am 70 with the usual need for better
lighting at my age. The shop lights work fine. Oh, I do use a pencil
flashlight, on occasion, to peer into a dark corner to check for spiders.

I noticed that Aircraft Spruce is carrying a new LED based wingtip
light/strobe system:

Has anybody got any experience of this product? I'm thinking of using it
instead of the usual aeroflash system. Hopefully it will draw less power
and not have the problem with failing capacitors that was discussed a couple
of months ago..
Thanks,

One thing to watch out for: if your shop is not part of the house and
relatively cold (like mine) then standard florescent lamps may not work
well (slow starts, flicker, short life). You need fixtures with ballasts
and lamps designed for lower temperatures.
Or maybe you live in Florida.
