Has anyone operated a 912 on a CH 701 without a fuel pump? I am removing my
10 gallon fuselage tank and installing wing tanks. Will the wing tanks
gravity feed the 912 without a fuel pump?
PS Anybody need a 10 gallon fuselage tank with capacitive sender and gauge?
Thanks, Bil

What does the FAA require for the intensity (candelas) of position lights.
I think the aft white light intensity is different than the wing tip red and
green lights. I realize it is a bit more complicated than just intensity,
they also have viewing angle requirements which I have found.

Hello All,
I had just got a quote from Yarde around 4 weeks ago, and all of their prices were
about $10 HIGHER, than Spruce and Wicks. I was really shocked. I had earlier
quotes from them and just like everybody has been stating, they were around
1/3rd of the cost.

If you really have to ship it. I would call the Yarde first. but price
all of the above, The Yarde 3 months ago had 4x12 .016 sheets of 6061 T-6
for about 1/3 the cost of either wicks or Aircraft Spruce, $46 per sheet.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Wow! I paid about $28 a sheet for the .016 a year ago from Yarde Metals.
They've really gone up. Still better than the others though. Some of my
stuff was $1.85 a pound. Shipping was like $149 from Connecticut to Nasville
Yellow Freight (Yarde's price). Ask them to set up shipping for you at there
discount rate. They originally quoted me about $500 using the carrier I
chose.

Hey Mark,
Try this link ---- http://www.pocketfms.com/
I found it from this link --- http://geocities.com/glass_cockpit/colormap/index.html
I downloaded the little demo onto my iPAQ. It runs, but I do not have a GPS receiver
that I can use with my iPAQ, to see how well it works in the real world.
Good Luck,
Keith

Hi Folks, I just got a Palm M130 with 1 gig memory and I was wondering
what I can use this for in the world of aviation. Anyone have
suggestions for software for the plane? I know it's not the newest or
fastest but I wanted to try one first to see if it is useful in my
world.

There are tons of aviation applications for Palms. Here is one collection:

There is a bunch of programs at http://www.palmflying.com/index.html . Some
are freeware, some are shareware. I haven't found any that I really like.
Some have locked up my PDA.
I just got an iPaq about a month ago. I thought I would use it for
navagation. So far I have not been impressed. The screen is a bit dim for
use in a bubble canopy. I can turn up the brightness, but the battery won't
last very long like that. The stylus is not easy to use inflight either. I
also need a special cable to hook my GPS up to the PDA. Somehow I feel it
is a lot simpler and cheaper to just use my Magelllan 315 GPS for
navagation.
I do have a couple of Excel spreadsheets that are useful. I'm not sure if
you can open Excel spreadsheets on your Palm or not, but I can forward them
to you if you are interested. One is for a quick check of the W&B. Punch in
the weight for pilot, passenger, baggage and gallons of fuel. Outputs Gross
weight and C/G. The other I think I found on someone web site (don't
remember who). You fly 3 different headings, record GPS speed, and heading,
then input into spreadsheet. Outputs true airspeed, wind direction and wind
speed. It's great for verfiying your airspeed indicator.

Anyone ever seen stall fences on a 701? I imagine they could be placed
where the flaperon changes angle of attack at about mid wing. And, would
they do anything on an aircraft that already flies so slowly?

I can imagine flying the 701 a lot with the doors off. I think it would be
a blast and offer a spectacular view.
Can anyone speak to its flying qualities with no doors? From the 701 I have
seen in person, it appears that aft of the door opening, the rear fuselage
is wider than the forward fuselage, and I am wondering if this adds tons of
drag and hurts the flying qualities.

Subject: | 701 Panel Thickness |

From my new plans, it appears that the 701's instrument panel is very thin.
A couple of books I have read talk about panels made of much thicker
aluminum. Any thoughts on what thickness works best for the panel?

As a new builder in a salt air environment I was wondering about long term
corrosion protection. If I treat all internal parts with zinc chromate now
during the building process, can I treat the internals later (2, 4, 6 years
later) with Corrosion X or ACF 50? In other words, can these types of
products be sprayed over ZC?

A 701 without doors attached is truly a BLAST, you wouldn't want to do
any long distance but for around the patch it is great. One thing I
would do though is to install a way to block off the Baggage
compartment. I have seen where a fellow who installed heavy weight
upholstery at the opening of the compartment, with the doors on it was
unzipped and out of sight which left the baggage compartment wide open.
With the doors off he zipped up the fabric and it was like a wall behind
your head.
This does two things , it improves the flying qualities of the 701 with
the doors off and it make the plane a whole lot quieter zipped up then
wide open. Kinda like rolling up the windows halfway in a convertible.

Use Zinc Chromate now and in 50 years it will still be working like day

The RAF-2000 gyros I've flown have the same set up, rear is wider than
front. And yes it adds a lot of drag. Awful windy and noisy in there too.
It's really neat if you don't mind all that air.

Burke,
My 701 is from a kit and the panel is .025". I added stiffeners to the back
of the panel and it works well. see www.geocities.com/cffd66 and look under
airplane and instrument panel.
Be careful about adding weight as the heavier the dry weight, the less you
can carry. My dry weight is 550 lbs. The wings are not painted yet. But
the fuselage and tail paint is less than 4 lbs. NAPA 1989 ford pickup
yellow, two coats over zinc chromate primer. I tell you about the paint, as
it does not have to add a lot of weight. My painting is not the best but
it does the job.
