To the list:
It would be nice to know just what statistics are available regarding
the reliability of the Jabiru engines, particularly the 3300.
If there are any users of Zenith aircraft with Jab engines, please
relate your experience and hours in service.
Of particular interest is the question of RF interference to the radios
and other instruments.
I plan to use a Jab3300 in my CH701, but have begun to hear some dire
stories about the engines and the service from the factory. Som data
would be useful to anyone contemplating using these engines.

Chuck,
the ancient FAA specs measure the pos. lights in *candles*, not candela.
FAR 23.1389. Try to find a modern light meter calibrated in candles!
Whelan claims that their LED lights meet the specs. Might be worth
contacting them to find out how they proved that.

Hello Listers:
No need to contact anyone, since:
"The Luminous Intensity of a source is the number of lumens or rays it
emits. Luminous intensity, candlepower, is expressed in units of candles or

I am getting ready to install the elevator trim motor assembly and I have a questions
as to which electrical connector everyone has been using.
My plan is to strip and twist the wires, use aircraft grade solder over the stripped
ends to prevent fraying. after that I was going to use the barrel-style
connectors (I know all you electrical-minded folks are cringing at my lack of
correct terminlogy, but at least you know what I'm talking about, right?) Then
I was going to cover the connections with shrink tubing.
The only other options that I can think of is either to tape them together with
electrical tape (the black stuff) or the old "wire nut" connector but I am hesitant
to use these methods in the plane
Thoughts?

Just a quick update. I had a final inspection by an EAA technical counselor yesterday
and had no squawks. I did a weight and balance today with an empty weight
of 1233 lbs, about 30 lbs heavier than the prototype, leaving me with a useful
load of 967 lbs. I'm happy with that and can probably account for the extra
weight in soundproofing, primer, autopilot and a few extra goodies in the panel.
I was worried after seeing how heavy Jeff's plane was. I did some high speed
taxi runs and boy does it accelerate. I was at 45 kts by the time I glanced
at the oil pressure and back to the ASI. It tracked straight and required almost
no rudder. I plan to have the FAA DAR inspection next week and it should
be in the air soon after!

You might check my site, www.angelfire.com/un/ch701/dash.html. There you
will see that I cut out the original dash panel and installed rubber mounts
I got from www.McMaster.com. Then made a 1/4" oak plywood insert for my
instruments. The insert bolts in eight places to the dash frame. I also
moved it back 2". Other than looks the main reason I did this was assess.
I can now remove the eight Allen screws and remove the entire instrument
panel. I also wired everything down the left side with about 12" extra
wire, which allows me to remove the entire "working" panel outside the
cockpit for maintenance and annuals. That's not to mention the fact that my
instruments are now cushioned against vibration.
I might have added a half pound or so but, so what? It will be well worth
it the first time I have to get behind the instruments.

You could get the good heat shrinkable butt connectors. Del City sells
them. Crimp, heat and they have some sealant in them to make them
weathertight.

I used small crimp-on butt connectors from radio shack and covered them with
heat shrink. In the unlikely event that I ever have to replace the motor
I'll have to cut the connectors off and re-splice so I left enough extra
wire to allow that. Soldering the ends is not really necessary, a properly
crimped connector will hold just fine without it. It's a good idea to
stagger the splices so they don't end up bunched together in the wire bundle
Twisting wires together and taping them is not an acceptable practice in any
application. Splices made this way are guaranteed to fail in time. I would
only consider this method for an emergency temporary repair and never on a
flight safety critical system.
I don't think I would consider using wire nuts on such small wires on any
kind of vehicle. Their reliability might suffer from vibration. The butt
splices are much better.
There is an alternative method described on the aero electric connection web
site that uses DB9 connectors but it seems to me a lot of extra work for
something that so rarely needs replaced.

what is the required intensity for the white "tail" light?

Mark,
I enthusiastically recommend a combination of "Copilot", which is available from most of the palm software download sites, and "flightmaster" from www.flight-master.com.
I'm using a visor pro with the plug-in Magellan gps module and these two software packages as my main gps system. Navaid databases are available as a free download from http://xcski.com/~ptomblin/CoPilot/.
The combination makes a very cheap, very functional aviation gps system, with moving
map, full flight planning, HSI and emergency attitude indicator.
On my visor, everything is very visible under the bubble canopy, and ok at night.

Solder and shrink tube every connection. Anything other than solder and
shrink tubing, you are asking for problems at some point in time, think way

Chuck,
GS Air, the manufacturers of the setup I am looking at have compared their
product to the FAR requirements (23.1383-23.1379) in this document:
http://www.geocities.com/americanstoo/GSAirTechDocument.pdf
They seem to do a fair job of explaining how they meet the viewing angle
requirements as well as having the right shades of red & green. The things
that concern me are that the analysis is based on the datasheets and not
'real world' measurements. For example there is no allowance for the
diffraction effect of the lens cover etc.. Also the write up on the White
LED strobe is unconvincing. They show that conventional strobes use tons of
energy but don't explain how their LEDs have an equivalent output.
I am not yet convinced that White LEDs can replace strobes, otherwise we'd
see them being used for flashes in cameras?

John,
I am also using the Cortec primer from Zenith. Only time will tell if it provides
protection that is similar to zinc chromate, but it seems very user friendly.
I dilute mine with denatured alcohol and find that it is very easy to apply
with a foam brush. It dries fast, cleans up easily and is a lot less toxic
than the zinc.

Subject: | Comm antennas... |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Beckman, Rick" <Rick.Beckman@atk.com>
Hi,All,
I am reluctant to show my ignorance, but I need some advice. I
have a Val-Com radio for my bird, but no antenna. Are there certain wave
lengths built into them, or is it something that must be magically set with
a SWR meter? There are a couple on e-bay right now, but I am
hesitant to bid because of said ignorance. I got great help on the # 93 bulb a
few weeks ago and I'm hoping for the same amount (or more) of good advice
on this.
Another Q. On many of the antennas I have seen, there is a teardrop
shaped mounting flange. On the Zodiacs the rear deck is curved and
the bases look to be flat. What's a guy to do here?! The thought of a belly
mount has crossed my mind....but then the guys above me probably couldn't
hear a thing from me. Just a thought......
Any and all help is much appreciated!

I am off to the paint store. I think I remember discussion about how much paint
is required for the XL and I believe it was about 1 gal primer and 1 gal of finish
per coat. Does that sound about right for a solid color paint scheme? Thanks
in advance. Jack

Hi Rick,
Don't worry about mounting the antenna flange on the
curved top. The radius of the curvature isn't enough
to cause a problem -- the base mounts flat. Looks good
on mine.

We have been flying the GS-Air nav/strobe LED lights on our Demo Jabiru.
The white and the color lights are brighter than the Whelens we have on our
other planes. We are quite please with them so far.

Chuck,
GS Air, the manufacturers of the setup I am looking at have compared their
product to the FAR requirements (23.1383-23.1379) in this document:

I am not yet convinced that White LEDs can replace strobes, otherwise we'd
see them being used for flashes in cameras?

I originally had a Digitrak single axis autopilot from Trutrak in my CH601HDS.
I have traded the Digitrak to a DigiFlight II. I have
been very happy with the both the autopilots and with the customer service from
Trutrak.
I am not familiar with the control system of the CH701. I expect that it is similar
to the CH601HDS. I elected to use a capstan drive. I can send pictures of
my installation off the list to anyone who is interested.

There are two suppliers that seem to provide kits for red and green
position lights in the RV world. One of those provides a white position
light...Pretty expensive as I remember.
Here is the kit I purchased for the RV...Designed primarily to go behind
a plexiglass screen so won't work for the Zodiac wingtip.

Neither of those provide an LED strobe solution so I am very skeptical
if they would work effetively

That's about right Jack. I bought 1 gallon of primer but ended up
buying less than I needed for the main color. I should have bought 1
gallon the first time.
I used the Endura urethane system, very nice and easy to work with
but make sure you ventilate properly!!!

I too am using the cortec, also diluting as needed for smooth application
with denatured alcohol. Previously many people mentioned carefully cleaning
the surface and rubbing with 3M pad for best adhesion. It will be a while
before knowing if it really works.

There are a few other small vendors but mostly targeting the RV world:
http://www.killacycle.com/Lights.htm
http://periheliondesign.com/ledlights.htm
I think this is what AS&S is selling:
http://www.airplanegear.com/skybright.htm
They also offer these but the position lights only come in 28 volts.
