    Subject: Jabiru engine reliability

If there are any users of Zenith aircraft with Jab engines, please relate your experience and hours in service. Of particular interest is the question of RF interference to the radios and other instruments. I plan to use a Jab3300 in my CH701, but have begun to hear some dire stories about the engines and the service from the factory. Som data would be useful to anyone contemplating using these engines. I had a final inspection by an EAA technical counselor yesterday and had no squawks. I did a weight and balance today with an empty weight of 1233 lbs, about 30 lbs heavier than the prototype, leaving me with a useful load of 967 lbs. I'm happy with that and can probably account for the extra weight in soundproofing, primer, autopilot and a few extra goodies in the panel. I was worried after seeing how heavy Jeff's plane was. I did some high speed taxi runs and boy does it accelerate. I was at 45 kts by the time I glanced at the oil pressure and back to the ASI. It tracked straight and required almost no rudder. I plan to have the FAA DAR inspection next week and it should be in the air soon after! Steve Adams

There you will see that I cut out the original dash panel and installed rubber mounts I got from www.McMaster.com. Then made a 1/4" oak plywood insert for my instruments. The insert bolts in eight places to the dash frame. I also moved it back 2". Other than looks the main reason I did this was assess. I can now remove the eight Allen screws and remove the entire instrument panel. I also wired everything down the left side with about 12" extra wire, which allows me to remove the entire "working" panel outside the cockpit for maintenance and annuals. That's not to mention the fact that my instruments are now cushioned against vibration. I might have added a half pound or so but, so what? It will be well worth it the first time I have to get behind the instruments. In the unlikely event that I ever have to replace the motor I'll have to cut the connectors off and re-splice so I left enough extra wire to allow that. Soldering the ends is not really necessary, a properly crimped connector will hold just fine without it. It's a good idea to stagger the splices so they don't end up bunched together in the wire bundle Twisting wires together and taping them is not an acceptable practice in any application. Splices made this way are guaranteed to fail in time. I would only consider this method for an emergency temporary repair and never on a flight safety critical system. I don't think I would consider using wire nuts on such small wires on any kind of vehicle. Their reliability might suffer from vibration. The butt splices are much better. I'm using a visor pro with the plug-in Magellan gps module and these two software packages as my main gps system. The combination makes a very cheap, very functional aviation gps system, with moving map, full flight planning, HSI and emergency attitude indicator. Also the write up on the White LED strobe is unconvincing. They show that conventional strobes use tons of energy but don't explain how their LEDs have an equivalent output. I am not yet convinced that White LEDs can replace strobes, otherwise we'd see them being used for flashes in cameras? Only time will tell if it provides protection that is similar to zinc chromate, but it seems very user friendly. I dilute mine with denatured alcohol and find that it is very easy to apply with a foam brush. It dries fast, cleans up easily and is a lot less toxic than the zinc. Gordon
