--> Zenith-List message posted by: Grant Corriveau <grantc@ca.inter.net>
Engine masters:
After shutting off the ignition on my Honda-based CAM100 engine, there has
lately been a tendance to run-on... a couple of sputters, with the usual
shakes and rattles and even the prop spinning backwards for a half turn or
so... This wasn't initially a problem, but has cropped up over the last few
hours.
Can one of you engine guru types point me to some reasons/fixes/things to
look for? I don't suppose it does any real harm, but it just shakes things
around and is annoying.
Thanks!

Mine quit that completely after changing from 87 to 89 octane fuel. Maybe your
fuel has been of less quality lately. don

Fellow listers:
I have to be in Phoenix the week of June 6-10 on business and was wondering
if a 601 driver in that area could be talked into a ride? My XL is now
about 90% complete and even after trips to SunNFun, Copper State, and Rocky
Mtn. last year just to catch a ride, I have yet to sit in a Zenith A/C with
the engine running! Please contact me if you're interested in dinner on me.

Grant,
Two primary causes come to mind. If the timing is excessively advanced, an
engine will tend to 'diesel' and run-on after the ignition is grounded.
Also, if the throttle and/or fuel shutoff don't completely close it will do
the same. Years ago auto makers started putting electric or vacuum
solenoids to pull the throttle plate completely closed when the ignition is
turned off because owners complained that when they were hot, their cars
kept running after they shut them off.

Hate to use this list for this purpose, but any e-mail I send to an AOL customer
bounces. I am trying to get it fixed. Garth Dawson, I got you e-mail on the
fuel tanks, but was unable to respond. Tanks will be ready for production within
three weeks. I have finished two. They hold just a little under 14 gallons.
Go to my site and get my phone number and call me. Thanks,

Is there any chance some flying XL's might be in attendance? (...he asks, had

Does the group have any thoughts as to ceramic paint for the firewall? The stuff
I have in mind is the type that you can paint auto engine compartments with.
(Or possibly the woodburning stove paint.)
Just a passing thought,

Kevin,
The problem I see is that the thick paints like ceramic can hide some crack developed
from the preflight inspection... is the only thing I will be concerned.

You can stop this from happening by shutting down the fuel
pumps and letting the engine run out of fuel.
Run on is caused by hot spots in the combustion chamber
that keep the fuel burning. Glowing hot carbon deposits
and even sometimes a bad helicoil spark plug repair.
The engine is more susceptible to this when using lower
octane gasoline. A high idle setting can cause this too
because the throttle plate allows enough gas in to keep
it running. Sometimes cleaning the plugs or changing them
will help for a while. Pulling the choke will stop it too
on our old dump truck.

Grant, Sounds like carbon buildup in the combustion chamber or poor gas. You
did say that your plane had set up for a while didn't you? Sometimes gas will
varnish up and those little nuggets will stay in the cylinder after cut off
and make it run on a bit. Also, a poorer grade of gas will do that. My bet is
though that you have some carbon in the heads that gets nice and glowing hot
and after you shut down the electric spark is still hot enough to fire off the
remaining fuel. This would not happen if you "starve" an engine with the
mixture. Way back in the early '70's when unleaded fuel started in a lot of autos
would diesel as you described. Try some additives that reduce carbon build
up. Good luck, Bill

Hi Grant,
Back in the old days we used to put it in gear and drop the clutch..
But on the other hand, I agree - use the next grade gas and let it idle a
couple of minutes before switch off.

Hi Kevin,
Now that I read my post, I think I writed it all mixed up and in the wrong order...
Hope you got the idea:
When doing the preflight or inspection the thick paints like ceramic ones, can
hide any cracks that could develope by vibration, mainly in soldering areas (engine
mount for example) but also can happen in the firewall. I think this
is best understood, sorry for my english.

When my MGA used to run on, usually on hot summer days, the drill was to
open the throttle wide, ignition off.
