I am reading the POH for the Tiger I owned in the past and the auxiliary pump was used to provide fuel pressure redundancy during low altitude operation or as a back up if the mechanical, engine driven pump fails. It seems to me that they preferred to have an engine driven pump backed up by electric just in case there was an electrical failure, the same reason they use dual magnetos, the engine will continue to run after an electrical failure. Up to this point I was thinking about two electric facet pumps, now I am beginning to wonder. I guess that's what is good about the matronics list, you read a lot and it makes you think. The antennae are: GPS above the instrument panel; Comant VHF on top skin at back of baggage shelf; ELT on top skin in front of the fin; transponder blade antenna on bottom skin behind main gear. I mention all this detail because we are wondering about possible interaction/interference of different pieces of radio equipment. The noise does not seem to come right at the beginning of a flight. Once it comes, it does not go away in the air. Turning off the transponder makes no difference. The last thing to be installed was the transponder; for a year before it was installed, we never experienced the problem. (I realize that the transponder frequency is so different from VHF that its interaction is unlikely.) All earth connections have been checked; there are no obvious earth loops. Shielded wire has been used where appropriate. One thing I am not clear about. In mounting the Comant VHF antenna on the top skin, a hole was cut bigger than the BNC socket on the bottom of the antenna, and there is a rubber gasket between the antenna bottom and the top skin; i.e. the outer BNC socket is not grounded to the skin. Is this correct? I apologize for this lengthy dissertation! But with a problem like this, it is hard to know what is important to put down, and what is not important. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. The noise is driving us nuts, but the loss of communication is a serious problem. I "think" what they mean by SS is that the pump has no mechanical points...In the old days with SU brand fuel pumps on British cars you had these mechanical points that would open/close as the plunger back and forth switching the current to the pump coil...What God awful things these were...If you were going to put two of these on an airplane, I would say save your money and shoot yourself in the head...it will be quicker, cheaper but the outcome will most likely be the same! Anyway my guess is there is a transistor in there that acts as a solid state switch...As I said I don't know for sure but it's a fair bet. Audio connections are the most likely place to look. Comm radio rear connector, audio panel/intercom connections, mic & headset(ears) jacks, etc. Stranded shielded wire is great as long as none of the strands of the center conductor are making contact somewhere else. Likewise, the strands of the shield need all be separate from places not intended. That said, I'm guessing that since the transponder was added later then you, or whoever installed it, has tugged a bit too much on the existing wiring. You may have just one little hair of a wire hanging out where it shouldn't & it touches something it shouldn't. Beats me why it waits til the engine/water/oil temp gets up.....you using EIS engine monitor? Got a sender making noise after it warms up? Flap motor limit switch not turning motor off at full up or full down? Bomb bay doors not fully closed? Radar altimeter that only works at pattern altitude? Also, is there a VOX involved? Disable VOX feature for testing. Any ham radio operator worth his plastic pocket protector might loan you a 50 Ohm dummy load. Just disconnect the BNC from the comm antenna and stick it on the load. You'll still have short range comm, real short, but it'll suffice for determining if the comm antenna is a problem. If this isn't a towered field you could just fly around with the dummy for an antenna until you determine the fate of your comm antenna. And, yes, the coax shield/outer shell of the BNC should be at RF ground at the base of a typical quarter-wave vertical antenna. There is a school of thought wherein all shields should only be grounded at one end, and all grounds connected to one point. You mention that this has been checked. If you had outside help on the transponder installation, might see what they did in this regard. Still doesn't account for part-time noise. I once made a list of the "1000 Most Common Radio Problems" but it started with "Is the unit TURNED ON?". It was aimed at Southern rural law enforcement, so doesn't apply here. Number 308 was, "Is the unit TURNED ON?". Obviously yours is, so best of luck. Regards, Zed/701/R912/still working do not archive

The test pilot said it flew like a "sweetheart'. About 45 minutes, total; slow flight, power on/off stalls, Cuban 8s, etc, and it handled smooth and honest. He reported 150 mph and 1500 fpm climb. We weighed it again with digital scales and it was 10 pounds pounds lighter at 782. Landings all the way to mid 40's with flaps. I tore her apart afterward to try to find out why it didn't crash and found no problems. Seems to me it might do. N505WP was born today and frankly I was not as worried, upset and concerned at the birth of my own two children, what's her name and Buddy, as I was today. Best Regards, Bill of Georgia

I did replace the galvanized mesh, that I originally used, with 1/8" 316 stainless mesh (cost was about $100, www.rungindustries.com). The galvanized mesh was slowly going away as expected. I considered replacing the aluminum tubes with stainless steel but when I reread the Bingelis article I realized that aluminum is typically used. There is some corrosion at the front of the tubes but it will take a few+ more years for it to compromise the tubing. I can replace the tubes in a few hours when needed. The mufflers are very accessable + visible for inspection. I've gotten lots of comments at flyins and at my home field such as: 'I'm impressed with how quiet your plane is.' And some climb underneath for a closer look.
