For those who have not yet had the opportunity to see the latest release from Hollywood-of-the-North:
Start making plans to attend the Awards Ceremony!
Emmy, Grammy, Tony, Star on the Sidewalk, Hall of Fame?
This may replace "Gone With The Wind" as a classic.

With Jon's DVD anybody with sufficient mechanical inclination to operate a funnel
      can install a Rotax 912.

For those who have read, and re-read, the Rotax manuals and are still somewhat
      confused, Jon makes it easy.

Highly recommended! I've installed same 912 on two aircraft and this would have
saved several miles of walking around the plane just looking to see where things
are located. Well worth the price of tired feet.

Jon actually kicks the tires and lights the fire. You get to see a 912 run, with
a dude (Jon), standing in the propwash while adjusting carbs. There is even
mention of "things to avoid" so that the number of landings at the airport equals
the number of takeoffs from same (the chapter entitled Throttle 101).

Fortunately it comes in a plain wrapper.....wouldn't look good for the mail carrier
to see the hot pink label proclaiming the movie name, "How To Make Wind (and
      Other Hangar Tales)".

      Good show, Jon!

The preceeding was an unpaid non-political endorsement not affiliated with anything.

P.S. Look closley in the background of the movie......is that a spigot and gages
      mounted on side of refrigerator?

      has anybody modelled a 601 on X-plane?
I've tried using the 601 model for Flight Simulator 2004, but for some
reason am not getting the close performance to a 601 that others
report. In fact, mine on FS2004 acts more like a 172 with a 300 HP
      engine and a 12:1 glide.
Rumor has it that X-Plane is a superior program for actually simulating flight.
      Any experience?
I sure would like to save some money on dual if possible!

      Hi Folks

Many of you know of Art Mitchell as the previous owner of Flypass in
Canada and as the fellow you could always call when you had a question
about your Zenith aircraft. Art now works for Mission Aviation
Fellowship and is frantically arranging an Aviation Fair at Guelph
Airport ( in Ontario, Canada) this coming Saturday between 10-4.
Unfortunately he is having problems arranging help to guide planes and
people plus he needs more planes to show up! So I'm asking that if
anyone in flying distance or driving distance could show up to lend a
hand to Art as he has done for many of you over the years of building.
Those who fly-in are guaranteed a free burger, so are any volunteers who
would help in the crowd control. There is also a Zenith announcement at
this show, come there and be the first to know.

Thanks Bill, It ain't over yet! We sloshed the tank with a special sealer
that will take a few days to dry. What's different about this sealer is
that the bond it creates can be broken by applying heat. I was worried
that if the transducer leak wasn't sealed I wouldn't be able to get it out
again. I'll keep the list posted on my saga. In any even, if I had to do
it all over again I would use electronic transducers (either capacitance
or resistance)instead of the mechanical type. Upon research (ACS catalog)
the prices were about the same.

Bob, X-Plane is a superior flight simulator in the real sense of the
term. MS FS2004 is a GAME.
      aeronautical engineer by trade.

I would love to have a 601 model for X-Plane and I just might sit
down someday and create one. The planemaker tools however are not
very intuitive and vert tedious to use but the end result is a REAL
and accurate simulation of the input.

List . . . there is a significant shortage of hanger space in the upstate NY area.
I am considering the economics of constructing a grass strip with rental
hangers for ultralites, sport planes, and the smaller GA single engine craft such
      as the J3, Aeronca, etc.

In order to cut down on the economic investigation time, does anyone on the list
from personal experience have some hanger and door manufacturers that they can
recommend, cost of the product, etc.? Also what would you consider a practical
runway length for a grass strip serving this type of aircraft? This is assuming
the runway will be east / west, the direction of the prevailing wind.
Do you know of any literature which will help in evaluating and designing such
      a project.?

      Jim,
Many thanks. That's about a 7 hour drive for me, but if I can't find
anything closer I may show up! Thanks for the offer of putting me
up--my brother in law lives in Marietta, which can't be far from you?

      Trev,
Yes, that is congruent with what I've heard.
This would be a very valuable resource for us. Based on how much time
it might take for you to develop, what might it cost me to pay you to
develop one for my 601 HD with an 85 hp Jabiru engine? It might
save me enough money on dual (no, not as a replacement for dual
instruction but as a supplement) that it would be worthwhile. Then
maybe we/I could recoup by offering the model to others on the list
      for a monetary donation.

Any thoughts, responses would be very welcome. Thanks for getting back
      to me already.

While looking at hangars for my airpark house (which is in the planning

      www.asibuildings.com ASI
      www.aviationbuildingsystem.com R & M steel

Most folks here on the airpark have one or other of those, and there is
one Miracle Truss (miracletruss.com), one Butler.

      ASI were particularly helpful.

Finding someone to erect them is half the problem I think!

      Bob,
I'd recommend you look into the state requirements, if there are any,
because here in Illinois the state requires minimums of 100 ft width,
2200 ft length and Code for buildings that are used for commercial
storage. This wouldn't deter me from doing what you describe, but
remember you have to find someone to mow the stuff and usually the day
you want to fly, you're going to be on the tractor pulling a mowing
rig. The best opportunities are where you put together a neighborhood
strip and the residents that live adjacent to the properties buy in with
the stipulations of usage and minimum house/property
footage and quality etc. Housing is easier to sell today. We've got an
abundance of hangars and runways in Illinois and the ones sharing
housing would seem best equipped to get the mowing done.

Rob, our local club is in the process of designing a homemade wood
hangar that will fit a multitude of airplanes.

We have built 2 of them so far. The one I am occupying is for a
taildragger and the overhang was intentionally short so the nose of
      my plane sticks out.
If you go look at the Zenith site under the recent 601 gallery you
will see a picture of it behind my plane.
      http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/pic05/t-page2.jpg

Our design criteria for the hangars are:

      1. Ease of construction
      2. As inexpensive as possible (we've built 2 of them for about $1K
CND each and that includes tin roofing.
      3. Quick to assemble

Right now, neither of them have doors however since ginseng farming
is very popular in our area we have access to a lot of the screening
fabric used to shelter the stuff from the sun. We might use some of
it as "curtains" and cover the whole front of the structure. We have
sucessfully used the material to cover a 50' opening on a large
quonset building. Cheap and effective. The first one took about 2
weeks to build, the second one about 3 days.

If things work out really well we will make up some formal drawings
and make them available for minimal cost on the www.upac.ca website.

Try downloading AC 150/5300-13 at the www.faa.gov . I tried and it takes a
      long time to download.

As an alternative consider buying an existing airport. I have seen a few in
upstate NY listed on various websites, for what appear to me to be modest
prices (less than $300,000) buying an existing airport would reduce your
      zoning problems

      Hi Bob,
I just wanted to toss my two cents worth and am sure I will upset some
folks. It would be nice to see realistic performance on a computer
model and fly it on rainy days, etc, but my experience with the HD/S
suggests it just isn't that remarkable a plane in terms of its
handling. If you can confidantly fly a C152 I think you will do just
fine. If you get it out of rig, have a very wild CG, or under or
overpowered it may be more of a challenge, but that would not be
apparant from flying any simulator. Even the higher performance HDS
or XL models with the potential for higher speeds are well -mannered
unless you get terribly hamfisted or awfully agressive on the
      stick(s). I couldn't find a HDS taildragger within 3 states of here
and the factory doesn't support them any longer but mine was a real
pussycat in grounhandling manners. It's great to be prepared for the
worst, but I think you will be very happy and there won't be any
surprises if you follow the plans and use the EAA tech counselor program
If you have any doubts at all about the plane or your skills, get a
competent test pilot to make the first flight. I am sure Jim Phillips
will agree with this point. It's a lot better to settle down a bit
after the momentus first flight is out of the way and then take your
      proud papa flights.
      Good luck

East and tall trees to the West. But I am also building a 701 and a hanger. I
am currently building a 42 x 36 pole barn style hanger. I have looked at many
hanger doors, the best one that I liked was Hydroswing ( Hydroswing.com) but
too expensive. I will eventually build my own to match the Hydroswing door.
For now I am going with two large sliding doors for economics sake. Another site

to check out is cool-airinc.com. They have several styles of manually
operated doors that are a little more reasonable.

Where in NY are you located? Did you live in L. I. at some time? I knew
someone in the flooring business with the same name as yours. You can contact me

off list if you need any further info.

Type in any location and also have a look at a satelite view. Kind of neat.
