I like the road map search in maps.google.com, but
their aerial photography is not quite up to what
terraserver can do:
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/
They are at a much higher resolution in terraserver,
but maybe older photos. I use it for looking at
airports that I haven't been to before. You can even
read the numbers on the ends of the runways when you
zoom in on them.

Subject: | Visit to William Wynne's facility last month |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Randy Culp" <randy_culp@hotmail.com>
Sorry folks that this message is a little out of date, (and long...), but I
was having some issues posting to this message board last month - that I
think I've gotten sorted out.
Anyway; this is a recap of a trip that my building partner and I made from
our homes in southern Ontario (Canada) to William Wynne's hangar in Florida
last month to pick up the Corvair engine that he built for us.
Sorry for the length of the post:

____________________________________
Greetings Listers:
I'm mostly been a lurker here, but had the pleasure of spending last
Thursday evening and Friday at "The Corvair Authority" hangar at Massey
Airpark in Edgewater, FL; and I thought I'd relay some of the experience of
that visit.
The purpose of this trip was to pick up a complete engine that I had ordered
from William around the first week of April. My building partner (father)
and I made the trip down from Ontario, Canada.
We arrived aroudn 7pm on Thursday, and everyone at the hangar was around
there working, except for Grace, who showed up later. Gus, (test pilot
extrodinaire) took both of us up on separate demo flights in their 601, and
the engine ran as smooth and as powerfully as we expected. He even managed
to impress us low-time pilots with some nearly vertical banked turns. I was
a little surprised by the stiffness of the dual stick setup, but obviously
that has nothing to do with the engine.
One thing some people may be interested to know is that they now have a fuel
flow monitor installed on the plane; but it was not calibrated yet to get
readings from.
After a tour of the facility, including a look at our engine (which was only
partially assembled at this point). We offerred our assistance in finishing
the assmebly work, but it was obvious that a couple of amateurs like us
would only be getting in the way, so we decided to leave the experts to
their work. William assured us our engine would be ready for a test run
Friday (tomorrow).
With that; we departed for the evening, while Kevin and William dove right
into the final assembly of our engine, with the Snap-On digital torque
wrench (don't leave home without it) in one hand, and a super-sized Dunkin'
Donut's coffee in the other.
After a restful evening at a local Day's Inn, we arrived back at the hangar
around 9am, to find the crew back hard at work. After inquiring into how
late they had to stay the night before to finish the engine; we were
informed that they had not gone home yet. Apparently William found an hour
or so to take a nap, while Kevin had questioned his masculinity for requring
such a rest.
After a preliminay run on the dyno in the morning (which sounded fine to our
un-tuned ears), William and Gus decided that something really didn't sound
good, and quickly traced the fault to 2 bad spark plug wires. (brand new
spiral core wires?!). A few hours later we had refuelled at Denny's (using
the fantastic hangar shuttle bus....a green, Greenbriar van), replaced the
wires, and had another run on the dyno.
Everything looked good with our engine producing 82 HP (uncorrected) at 3100
rpm. (138.5 lb-ft)
FYI: test conditions....around 85F, estimated 75% RH, overly rich carb,
stock automotive cast iron manifolds, supertrapp mufflers, and only 30
degrees total ignition advance.
William was confident that under "standard" conditions this engine would be
making 100HP once he bumped up the timing to 32-34 (with our promise to only
use 100 LL fuel), a correclty adjusted carb, and freer flowing exhaust. I
have no reason not to believe him.
Note also that William's is using a new torque measuring system consisting
of a 1 foot "arm" bearing weight down on a digital scale. That hasn't been
calibrated yet, so there may be some error built into that measurement
(either way) also. I'm sure pictures/details of this setup will show up on
the website....someday.
After some minor adjustments to one of the sets of points, it as time for
another test run before the final cool down. Total time our engine ran - -
probably around 1.5 hours.
Everything looked good (including a nicely HIGH oil pressure of 30-35psi at
850 rpm!) so it was time for us to drive back to Canada, and William to get
some sleep! (Kevin had succummed to sleep earlier in the day)
All in all it was a very positive experience. For those of you who are
anywhere near being driving distance from Daytona, I highly recommend the
trip.
There has been some questions/comments on here lately about the leadtime for
orders from William. I can confirm that 1) they appear to be VERY busy, and
therefore there are definitely having difficulty keeping up with orders as
quick as they would like to. 2) they squeaky wheel does seem to get the
grease. This was evident by the extrordinary efforts that William and the
gang put into getting our engine finished once we arrived there. My
suggestion: order EARLY, or if you need something quickly.....make the trip
there and they WILL get it done for you! Also; while we were there, William
was still answering phone calls....so if you need to talk to him...keep
trying until you get through!
For those of you waiting for intake manifolds and/or exhaust systems, or any
of the other parts that I was also hoping to purchase when I was there:
The intake welding fixture was just completed when we were there (at least
the one for the MA3 carbs). Unfortunately William was a little "tired" to
be welding (at least if we wanted decent looking welds), so we didn't press
to get that from him while we were there. I did see the pre-bent tubes in a
box; but no word on when they will be offerred for sale.
Exhaust: I saw the tubes, but the welding fixture doesn't look like it is
done yet.
Engine mounts: William was welding up ours when we arrived; and we took it
with us. I'm not sure if there is a waiting list for these or not.
Cowls: There was one onhand in the shop, but William said he'd prefer to
get us a "better one". Apparently he is having a little difficulty in
getting these in a timely manner, but he promissed to bring one for me to
Oshkosh.
That's about all I wanted to say (I'm sure if you read this far you'll think
it was MORE than enough).
Like I said - a very positive experience. If you have any interest in
making the visit; I highly recommend it.

Bob . . . I also have built a pole barn style hanger. Now waiting to put a
floor inside. I plan on using the Ultimate Door
http://ultimatedoor.homestead.com/ultimate.html . Two of my friends in my
flying club have made and installed them. They are quite nice. The company
supplies the hardware and tracks, and you buy the wood and covering. I
think the cost for a 40 ft. door will probably be under $3,000. It's rigged
up to a counterweight box and can be hand cranked up without much effort.
Take a look at them. It appears to be a small operation and Greg and Karen
Gehring are quite nice and helpful. Their email is gehringk@prodign.net.

Are your pumps on the hot firewall?...If they are this is classic VL
territory.
Do you have a header tank or just wing tanks...If just wing tanks its
even worse.
I know I sound like a stuck record but the only VL safe system is to
have the pumps down low, in a COOL location and preferably as close to
the tanks as possible.
If none of the above is true you had better be using 100LL as the vapour
pressure is about 30% higher than with auto fuel (worse case) and will
to some extent overcome this dodgy hydraulic system.
The risk of being killed due to VL is much higher than having
pressurised fuel in the cockpit IMHO.

I'm having a problem which seems to be fuel Vapor Locking.
Corvair shuts down after a good taxi test and has quit after a flight,
after touchdown and at idle throttle.
Engine temps are in the green, but temps in the lower cowl are close to
200 Deg. at mid to high RPMs.
I have tried more input to the bottom of the cowl, shielding and ducting
air to the gasculator, increasing exit areas, and the problem seems to
get a little worse with each mod.
Getting ready to try a fuel pump to keep gas circulating.
Would appreciate any information you may offer in helping me with this
problem.
Thanks, Greg

Hi Bill,
I got an idea... VDO instruments are not very expensive, so what I would do in
your case is to check the sender's tread size in your engine, then order a set
(sender and instrument) this way you will be sure that they ARE compatible,
at least you will save lots of time.

Dear Thread Friends, I have mentioned before how my oil press reads high at
max rev. Talked to the fine folks at Jab Tn yesterday and he confirmed that the
sender unit that comes on the 3300 is not compatible with the early VDO gauge
sold be ZAC in their FWF kit. Further that a replacement could be purchased
at NAPA possibly. Anybody out there in airplane world know the part number for
this VDO compatible sender unit ? Thanks, Bill in Georgia

You can also go to www.landings.com go to the top of the page in the blue area and click on databases. Next go to airports and click on information. You can now search for an airport any number of ways. Once you find your airport, scroll down at the bottom, there are 2 aerial photographs. The first will allow you to enlarge and the second, is a fixed photograph.

Here we have already assembled two kits (ours) and helped in two from friends...
All tanks were leak free. In fact ALL the weldings in the kits (alum or Chomoly)
were realy first class.
The person(s) that welds in the ZAC plant is a very good one.
The fiberglass area needs a little improvement. We had to make our own molds and
pieces, and do some work on the factory cowling, at the end the cowling looked
fine.

Randy,
Most that have found leaks have returned them, or if installed already,
find it necessary to
remove the tank and replace or repair. The best method is to re-TIG the
leak provided you
know where it is. 2 lb of air and a bubble solution work very well for
finding these things.
If you don't TIG weld, you could try pro-seal inside or an externally
applied epoxy if you've
no other recourse. I'm not faulting ZAC for leaky tanks because it's
hard to make them without
leaks at first, but they should be the ones doing the pressure testing
and being absolutely sure of
their soundness.

Trev and Ron,
Thanks for your replies re X-Plane. I want to apologize to Trev for
the implication in my last post that he was available for hire--I
wrote that very quickly between appointments and didn't give enough
consideration to my wording. It appears from your most recent post,
Trev, that you didn't take offense and I thank you!
Ron, you make a good point about the mild handling characteristics of
the 601s. The main thing I wanted to practice was dead-stick
landings with the 601's notoriously low glide-ratio. (And, of course,
if the X-Plane model could be configured with a Dyon D-10 on the
panel, which my plane will have but with which I have never flown,
that would be a big help too!)
Trev, if you decide it will take too much time, maybe we could contact
somebody at http://www.xplanehelp.com/ who models these things for
fun and see if we could entice them to model us some 601s?
Best,
Bob

Subject: | CH640-V-11 Drawing errors? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Brian Walker" <brianwalker@charter.net>
Take a look at CH640 drawing 640-V-11.
The upper view shows rear rib #5 flipped over. The details on the lower part of
the page show rib #6 flipped over. Noting how the L's are installed on the
spar, there is only one way to install rib #5 (& rib #6), that is as it is shown
in the upper view. Therefore, I am assuming the upper view is correct and
the two lower detail views are incorrect. The lower detail view for ribs #1 thru
5 should only apply to rear ribs #1 thru #4 and the detail for rear rib #6
should be for rear rib #5. It should also be noted on the drawings that a left
rib #5 should be installed on the right wing to keep the same wing contour.
Do you agree with all of the above?
When building my right wing last year, I simply took a right rear rib #5 and flipped
it over. I am assuming this will not be a issue since when comparing the
contours of the rear ribs, they are symmetrical within 3mm all around. Not
perfect but within tolerance. Am I OK here?
Finally, why does the lower detail on rib #10 show rear rib #10 flipped over?
One can achieve alignment with the front rib for a straight rivet line without
flipping it over....suppose it has something to do with the forces acting in
that part of the wing?? If indeed it should be flipped over, should I have used
a left rear rib on the right wing to achieve the same wing contour?
I posed the same questions to the folks at AMD (Matt) and Zenair (Tim) so I'll
let you know what they come up with.
I welcome your comments and suggestions.
Thanks, Brian

Thanks for the info, a neighbor in the area has one like that. I asked him
where he got it and he said he got plans years ago and built it himself. He
seemed to be happy with it. He has a stationery bike as his source for the winch.
Where in upstate are you? I am near N03 Cortland airport.
