From: Grant Corriveau Alain De Hondt" , Gord Larsen --> Zenith-List message posted by: Grant Corriveau So, I seem to have fixed the run-after problem by correcting the idle speed on my CAM100. As I was running it today with the cowl off, and standing outside, I noticed a noise that seemed to be coming from the region of the belt drive.... sort of a "clatter" or "low growl" ... I don't recall hearing this before -- I have had a couple of short term, unidentified 'squeal' noises in the past that just came then went... Am I hearing a developing bearing problem? In the Properllor Reduction belt drive (I sure hope not)? Or is there a water pump or something at that end of a Honda 1.5l engine? (this would be the flywheel end in the car version)... Any thoughts from you mechanically-inclined people out there. best, -- Grant Corriveau C-GHTF / HDS / CAM100 ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 12:28:32 PM PST US From: Gary Gower Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Belt drive noise? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Gary Gower Hello Grant, I think that you can easy find the source of that noise. I have some experience with reducton drives, right now I am building one as a side project, for a 2 L VW water cooled in line engine, a project I have next... Well, to the point: I read in Jim Alexandre's page (about his Suzuki conversions), that an engine with a flywheel (not with an automatic trans plate), can be run safely without the propeller and with the reduction installed. Using a mechanics stetoscope (sp?) , the ones like the doctors to hear the chest, but with a cromed point. find where the sound comes, then do the repair. The page I am refering to is: http://www.nessaaircraft.net/reductionFrame1Source1.htm Near the middle he writes (about torsional vobration, but note that is safe to run the engine without propeller): "Today on new installations I always run the engine and cycle from full rpm to idle and look for blurring moving parts (with prop off). The HTD belt will start flapping and cause a double line of travel as the cycle rpm causes waves in the belt. I have examined timing belts in engines running at work, some do the same at high rpm settings. But this is torsional vibration caused. Same phenomena may be observed in serpentine belts operating the accessory pulleys in some modern engines." Taking this in account, is safe to do this to check the noise in your engine... BUT if your reduction uses the auto trans ring plate, then is another story, because the engine needs the propeller as flywheel, then Will be VERY UNSAFE to get close to the propeller with the stetoscope and hear the noise. In fact Jim is Canadian, probably he lives in the same side of Canada as you, so you can visit him or call him. Hope this helps. Saludos Gary Gower. Guadalajara, Mexico. The dealer is called Smart Shoppers. Their website is: _http://smartshoppersinc.com/_ (http://smartshoppersinc.com/) I obtained their 'start to finish' kit for $160 and was well pleased with what I received from them. Got everything but the kitchen sink with the kit. Paint went on well and only time will tell of the service life. But, Kirker sells a lot of paint to truck fleets, etc. I can't imagine it to be all bad. After my initial post there was some speculation from other builders as to where the paint was manufactured. (China, BFE, or?) I just placed an additional order with this dealer and inquired as to where Kirker paint is manufactured. The dealers response was it is manufactured in the New York. The parent company is Coventry Coatings which is the second oldest paint company in the US. Some of my fellow builders may wish to check it out and compare cost/quality. I was well satisfied with the gloss and holdout in the landing gear and underside of the fuselage without color sanding or buffing. (I'll be a little more critical about doing the upper surfaces, though) I'm not affiliated with the company, dealer, or receive any form of compensation. Just passing along what I found out. The growling noise is probably the cogs that are slightly worn trying to mesh with the sprockets. I can't hear it from inside my plane but when I make a pass over my friends on the ground they swear they can hear a slight whine and I think its the redrive. How they can even hear it over the V-8 is hard to believe though......If you speed up the motor slightly and load up the belt does the noise go away? As for running the motor without the prop, in my case I machined a very light weight flywheel and its probably lighter then a auto trans flexplate. I have never had any quirks with running the motor propless, in fact it makes it ALOT easier to time it. How do I know???? just last week I wanted to check my ignition timing and I had a friend sit in the pilots seat to run the throttle, it took everything I had to just hold on to the cowl and aim the timing light. And that was at 3000 rpm, the motor turns 4200 on takeoff so there must be a tremendous prop blast at wide open throttle !!!!!! do not archive Ben Haas N801BH www.haaspowerair.com ________________________________ Message 15 ____________________________________ Time: 04:56:36 PM PST US From: "Zodie Rocket" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: Belt drive noise? --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Zodie Rocket" Grant remember that those belts actually shrink when they warm up, then they squeal.
