Hello Brian.
I am using solution #1. Works great so far. My main bus is located behind
the instrument panel. Otherwise it is like you describe in # 1.
One other thing about the battery contactor. When you connect the switch to
the contactor, this wire is to be grounded, so you need to run a separate
wire from the large pole (where 4 AWG wire is connected) to the main bus.
Do not ask me how I found out. Sorry, I am not an electrician. :-)
Hope this helps.

>(experimental) acft.
Kenneth,
No sales tax on homebuilt aircraft in California??? Where did you get this information
and if you can submit a link to that ruling then we can put this question
to rest. Publication 79A on the California State Board of Equalization website
is specific on the sales tax laws when purchasing an aircraft for use in
CA whether or not it was purchased in California. Sales tax must be paid.
It does not differentiate homebuilt aircraft from any other aircraft but if you
can show that you paid tax on the kit or parts from scratch build then I'd think
you won't have to pay again. I'd show all expenses in a letter with receipts
showing tax paid on all parts along the way and submit it with Pub 79A.
The state will figure out if any tax is due. Keep accurate records. Submit
Pub 79A, pay what you think is due and hope for the best. I'd hate to get hit
later with interest and penalties. You can always call the state and ask them.
If they tell you no tax is due, get it in writing
.
Don't forget that you also pay Personal Property Tax each year on aircraft in CA.

For those of you planning to use the Jabiru 3300 on your 601, thought
I would wet your taste buds a little bit:
Outside air temp: 85 F
Flight weight: 910 lb (940 lb empty)
Airplane model: 601HDS, with nose wheel & forward tilt canopy
Wheel pants not yet installed
Climb rate at 3000 ft density altitude: 1300 fpm
Full Throttle speed at 7500 ft: 134 mph
Speed was checked with a GPS using two runs, one North and one South.
Should pick up another 3 or 4 mph with the wheel pants installed and
hopefully a few more mph with some other drag cleanups. Looks like the 601
HDS may be capable of meeting ZAC original claims for 140 mph max cruise
when you add another 25 hp into the mix. Have noticed the 601 is no glider
with its short, fat little wings. You really notice it when you pull the
power back and look at the deck angle required to achieve over 110 mph.
All in all, a great flying airplane that should have reasonable cross
country capability. Haven't found any bad habits so far. Looking forward
to building some hours this summer!

Like you I am very interested in using a rotary engine in an XL but the Mazda
choices don't seem to fit very well either because of weight or excessive
horsepower. Even Chris Hientz has suggested that rotary engines are a perfect
fit for this design. But, from the reading I have done in regards rotary use
in other aircraft, it appears to be difficult to sort out cooling, oiling,
etc. There are some new Wankel engines either new to the market or close to
release that are interesting. Check
http://www.uavenginesltd.co.uk/index.php?id=393 as a source in Europe and
http://www.freedom-motors.com/ for some interesting engines that are not quite
there yet.
Anyway, I have plenty of time to consider this as my project went on hold when
I decided I needed to have some place to build my dream and went and bought a
150 year old farm house. Now I have to rebuild in order to build.

Hi I have been reading this list occasionally and been thinking of building an
XL. I am not in a position to start any project soon. I thought that this 8ft
metal brake could be of interest to someone in the Cincinnati area.
www.hiltonauctioneer.com the auction is on Saturday. I just found it on their web site and I don't know anything about the item.

Tim,
What's your engine type? That could have a bit to do with it.
You could find someone with HDS wings that wants to trade for your HDs.
I've got a new design set of wheel pants that gets you a little extra.
You should read the archives on IVO props first. They're an odd
configuration
that some have had difficulty with reliability.
