You can adjust both ailerons down a few degrees. This will effectively
increase the angle of incidence of the wing.

Wish I'd found this a couple of years ago! Why can't all suppliers have
such great, interactive online web pages! For example - if you check out
the fuel check valve page, as you click the radio button choices for types
of ends on the valve, the diagram automatically changes to show what that
looks like! I'm impressed!

Jeff,
I don't know about adjusting the wing spar itself -- maybe by re-drilling
the rear spar attach braket? ... can't think of an easy way.
I made small adjustments by rigging the neutral position of both ailerons.
I adjusted them both 'downwards' by the same small amount - a degree or so
at a time... then checked the flight results until I liked the attitude.
Theoretically this may reduce cruise speed by a knot or two. I was careful
to ensure that the aileron push/pull rods always had at least the minimum
number of threads inside the end attachments; and that the ailerons still
have full travel in both directions.

In building this aircraft, I have been confronted with the dilemma of 'who
to believe' many times, as different bits of conflicting advice were passed
back and forth.
Just one rather obvious example from my own experience: I was told by my
final inspector (Canadian regs), that the air inlet/carb heat tube was
automotive grade tubing from Canadian Tire and should be replaced with an
aviation grade SCAT tube. I thought to myself: "But the engine manufacturer
wouldn't have installed this thing if they didn't know already that it works
fine... - right-?" Well, in the first two hours that automotive grade tube
began flaking to pieces from the heat and vibrations. I'm thankful that
none of the bits found their way into the carb.
Also, it took a long time for Zenair to give up on their 'pet' flip/flop
canopy design and produce the XL with the rear opener type. So far I
haven't heard of any of this new design inadvertantly opening and departing
the airplane.
On the other hand, there are hundreds of Zenair planes out there flying
successfully DESPITE the worst mods you can imagine we builders inflicting
on the basic design! Overall it has proven its worth 'as designed' many
many times.
In the final analysis, YOU the builder will be responsible to gather all the
information, THEN sift out the pet peeves, preferences, and pontifications
from the hard facts, and build it accordingly. Eventually it will be your
butt strapped to the resulting airplane. You'll want to be confident in
whatever choices you've made.

I have been working on my 601 XL for about 4 months
now, and finished all the tail pieces, ailerons,
flaps, and wing framing. I am now installing the wing
skins. It would be nice if I had someone with some
experience look at my work to make recommendations and
so I can learn what I have been doing wrong or what I
can do to make the work easier. I read some recent
messages about "tech counselors" here. Who are these
people, what are their qualifications, how much do
they charge for their service, and where might I
contact one? Are they FAA engineering staff?
It would be awful nice to have someone else besides my
wife inspect all of my work.

Matt,
I'd stick with the plans because these things were designed , not by
estimate but built from a set of numbers
that weren't arrived at casually. The change may have other
consequences that are obscure to you.
Call Nick and talk to him before making such a material change or at
least ask the Tech Counselor
to provide the numbers that show design deficiency.

Tech Counselors, are EAA members who have a lot of building experience. Some
are A&P'S, others are just very good at building. An EAA Tech Counselor
cannot charge for his or her time. It also looks good when your DAR is
inspecting your plane.

Don,
Tech Counselors are designated EAA Chapter Members that have, at the
least, completed the building of an airplane.
Not many are experts in design or engineering, but do have an intuitive
eye and generally good knowlege of
what is correct or not in aircraft construction. They donate their time
to come and provide an extra set of eyes
for the builder during the construction process. The intent by EAA is
to provide assist to the builder and improve
the safety record of homebuilt aircraft. They do not charge for their
time and they are found by contacting the
nearest EAA Chapter to arrange such a visit. Their qualifications are
general and non specific, but each chapter
has a couple of Tech Counselors that are "expert" in welding or engines,
sheet metal or fabric etc.
On most design or build decisions, the designer should be contacted when
something is questioned.
Zenith was most helpful during the build of my project and I had three
visits by our tech counselors
that assisted obtaining insurance on my plane before it flew.

A couple of weeks ago, I reported intermittent radio noise in our headsets
on transmit and receive from the tower. We seem to have gotten rid of the
problem, although the solution is not clear-cut. We removed the 25-pin
computer plug from the back of the NAT intercom, wiped the silicone grease
around a bit, put the plug on and off about 3 times, and then put the
screws back. A more likely cure was the BNC cable plug onto a BNC elbow
plugged into the BNC socket on the bottom of the Comant VHF antenna
mounted centrally on the top skin of our Zodiac HD. These Amphenol BNC
plugs/sockets came silver-plated, and were a bit tarnished. I wiped them,
put silicone grease on them, and then plugged them on and off about 3
times. There are a couple of points of interest here. The base of the
VHF antenna must be grounded to the top skin; it was, by the 4 mounting
screws. If it is not grounded here, I am told the cable back to the radio
becomes part of the antenna, and radiates VHF inside the aircraft with
inevitably bad results. A rubber gasket is supplied, and was installed
between the antenna base and the top skin; its purpose is to let the
antenna flex a bit in the wind without putting a crease in the top skin
(it is only 0.016" Al in the HD; I also added a doubler plate of 0.025"
AL). Some people firmly believe this gasket must be removed and thrown
out. I don't buy this, provided it doesn't interfere with the antenna
base grounding to the top skin. The difficult part in finding this
problem was the facts that (a) it almost always happened in the air, not
on the ground, and (b) it seemed to happen on hot humid days, not cool dry
ones. Perhaps the top skin/antenna flexes a little bit differently in the
air, because of wind resistance, due to thermal expansion??? The reason
for putting this down to the List is: beware of tarnished contacts. I am
a great believer in silicone grease on electrical contacts to prevent
corrosion leading to a bad contact. This grease, although itself an
insulator, never seems to cause a bad contact, but serves to prevent them.
I give my thanks to Zed Smith for his comments to the List in response to
my earlier "cry for help"!

I live just outside Red Oak, Iowa, in the SouthWest
corner. How would I contact one of these EAA members
for this service. I am a mamber of EAA, but not
really much involved with it. There aren't any local
EAA chapters in my area that I know of. I did go to
Oshkosh last year before I bought my 601 XL kit, but
can't afford to go back again now that I spent all of
my money.

I've reluctantly made a recent decision to change
engine choices. I was planning to install a Corvair in
my 601XL, but recent circumstances have changed that
decision. Instead, I'm now looking into the Jabiru
3300 again. I'll have to pry my wallet a little
farther open, but I need to get this plane in the air!
So, does anyone know if there's a complete FWF kit for
the 601XL, and if so, is it provided by ZAC, or by a
US Jabiru dealer?
[Jeff Small, you still out there? You've always had
really good advice relating to that powerplant.]

I just ordered my FWF and engine 1 1/2 weeks ago directly from Jabiru USA.
If I understood them correctly my engine should be on the next boat over
from Australia and they thought they would be able to ship to me at the end
of July or beginning of August. I also asked them to go ahead and ship my
FWF as soon as they had a complete kit together so I can get started on
that. I have talked to Pete from Jabiru USA for the past 2 years at Sun n
Fun and Oshkosh and he always seemed straight forward with me.
Also, there's a Jabiru class 2-3 and 4-5 August in Shelbyville, TN. I'm
registered for the 2-3 class.

Click on the "EAA Chapters" button on the left side of the page, then click
on "locate a chapter". This will bring up a search engine to search by state
for EAA chapters. There are several chapters in Iowa. Since you live near
the south west corner of the state You might search for chapters in Missouri
and Nebraska. I see there is one listed for Omaha.

a wile back there was a posting and pictures where someone who had
pictures of his install of a P51 style radiator cowling under the
fuselage of his CH601. Does anybody remember these and where I can find
them.

engine. Make sure you specify the right type air box and oil cooler when you
order.
