G,Day Steve, Yes it is a HD
Yes I got the photos, looks OK, A few questions
What is the make of PSR ?
Is the subaru motor made up by Stratas or others ?
Did you build from a kit or scratch build ?
Did you use the dome rivet system or standard avex rivets ?
I am in a group that is building seven 601 HD,s
Yes please send all photos you have of the plane.
I shall go up to my hangar now & measure the length my plane
to see if it will go into a 20ft container if I take the motor off.
Regards again

William - as others have alluded to, this typically isn't a problem. In my
experience as an A&P, all sheets of aluminum greater than about 2 x 2 are
shipped rolled in about a 2 foot x 2 foot by "width of the sheet" size box
(maybe even smaller than 2 x 2, I never actually measured one). Never had a
problem with them unrolling or laying flat eventually. I suppose you could
look up the plastic deformation limits of the alloy and figure it out,
but...it's probably not worth your time.
The comments are right, though - there will be a fair amount of energy
stored in the roll - I'd cut the tape and stand back a bit. It's kinda like
uncoiling a bandsaw blade (without the teeth, though :
)
Most shops I've worked in have racks for aluminum, stored vertically on the
long edge. This keeps most "crud" (shavings, sand, rivet tails, loose
children, whatever) from getting between the sheets and scoring up the
alclad layer when you pull it out for use. So you're definitely on the right
track.

Hi Bill, I noticed your posting on the Zenith List
and was wondering if you would share your new source
of aluminum.
The aluminum supplier I mentioned is McKinsey Steel
and Supply of Fl., Inc. http://www.mckinseysteel.com/
located in Ft. Lauderdale. I will later post my
experience with them.
Would you mind sharing your bill of materials list
for the Z601XL with me?
Yes I will, in the meanwhile I have an estimate of all
the sheet metal cost based on the part layout that you
can download at www.CH601.org (essential to any
scratch builder). Here it is, the prices for .016 .063
.090 .125 are from Aircraft Spruce because I dont
have the McKinsey price of them.

I am trying to fit the Glass Fibre Tip on my right hand side wing, and well
it does not fit very well, if the top is aligned with the top front skin,
then the bottom skin kicks upward at the front of the spar, and Visa Versa.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a "wise one", but I've been there before.
I had great difficulty getting all the fiberglass pieces to fit (stabilizer
and wing tips). I found that if you use a heat gun and slowly heat up the
pieces you can gently re-shape them. If you go too fast you'll get bubbles
in the finished surface, but slowly you can get it done. Cloth gloves help
also. Once in place they will pretty much hold their shape.
Hope this helps,

This has been brought up before, but may deserve mentionining again - .020" can
be less expensive, is easier to handle and may provide a better finished product
with little weight gain. Larry McFarland pointed this out to me just prior
to ordering a big order for my fuselage and it was a big help to me. After
handling the .016" for the tail section, the .020" I used on the fuselage was
a big improvement.

I have been fighting a similar battle with the stabilizer tip on my
XL. After reading some information on the EAA site I learned we are
not alone. Apparently it is typical for fiberglass parts to need
major adjustment before use.
One important trick is to bend the fiberglass to fit. If you heat it
to near boiling water temperature it will bend and hold its shape
when cool - just like any plastic part. My favorite way to bend it
is to use a heat gun of the paint stripper variety. Use it carefully
so you don't start the plastic on fire.
To get the shape you want it may help to make plywood forms and use
them to press the hot plastic against something like your
workbench. If you hold it for a minute or so the plastic will cool
and keep its shape.
One big challenge is the fact that as you bend the fiberglass the
"Bottom" will not remain flat -- it will reform its shape to use up
the material connected to the bent area. To get it flat to fit the
metal rib I have had great luck with a plywood form the same outline
as the rib. If you drill and cleco the fiberglass to the plywood
form so as much of the fiberglass matches the flat wood and the
remaining fiberglass hangs over the edge then you can use a grinder
to get rid of the excess fiberglass. Of course, grinding the
fiberglass will put lots of silica dust in the air. It is important
to your health not to breath this stuff or get it on your skin, so
use protective clothing and a good dust mask.
Good luck!

Hi Ron,
It is a Straus motor built by Reiner Hoffman. I have built from a kit using the
standard pop rivets in all areas except where called for. I will have to e-mail
pictures from home as I am at my office now and don;t have access to the

Oh, one other note of interest, I have the Rocky Mountian Engine digital monitoring
system as well. very cool. Also, taskem digital altimeter, electric artificial
horizon, analog airspeed, analog climb/descent, as well as digital on
taskem.
I believe the plane should easily fit into a 20ft container with engine and wings
off.
Let me know. There are 4 people expressing interest in this project now that have
contacted me off list. As I wrote in original message I will not get into
a bidding situation. the first person to commit funds get's the deal.

Bill . . . it goes flat immediately so that's no problem. The point about
it unrolling quickly (by itself if it gets away from you) is a very valid
point. Think of it as a coiled spring wound tight. This can be dangerous,
but also can cause bends in the sheet. I strongly suggest you have a
helper and that you both wear safety goggles. I myself would keep it rolled
up. Spring clamps at either end are good for keeping it in a roll, with a
piece of rope tied around the middle. Robert Schoenberger 701

Hey William
Beware your parts list may be out of date since the recent updates zenith
has made to the 601XL. The fuselage side skins and bottom are now .025
instead of .016. You should need two less sheets of .016 and 2 more of .025.

Hi Bill, I noticed your posting on the Zenith List
and was wondering if you would share your new source
of aluminum.
The aluminum supplier I mentioned is McKinsey Steel

located in Ft. Lauderdale. I will later post my
experience with them.
Would you mind sharing your bill of materials list
for the Z601XL with me?
Yes I will, in the meanwhile I have an estimate of all
the sheet metal cost based on the part layout that you
can download at www.CH601.org (essential to any
scratch builder). Here it is, the prices for .016 .063

have the McKinsey price of them.

Just a note. The updated plans use .025 for the fuse bottom and side skins.
I'm sure you knew that already. But what you may not know is that ZAC has
done away with all those "fuselage side gussets" 6B3-5 with the update. I
guess they are not needed with the thicker skin.

This has been brought up before, but may deserve mentionining again - .020"
can be less expensive, is easier to handle and may provide a better finished
product with little weight gain. Larry McFarland pointed this out to me
just prior to ordering a big order for my fuselage and it was a big help to
me. After handling the .016" for the tail section, the .020" I used on the
fuselage was a big improvement.

Recently I read a posting on the need for additional clearance when using forged
pistons. I purchased the compete set, Cylinders, forged pistons & chrome rings
a few weeks ago from Clark's Corvair so I called them and ask about clearances.
I was told they add .0005 to the standard clearance and have never had a
problem, I don't remember who posted that information but he was evidently right.

Last night I decided to see how much unusable fuel there actually was in
each tank by filling them with water - 1 liter at a time until it
started flowing out the drain. Each tank was placed level (fore to aft)
at tilted at the wing dihedral (2%).
The 4 tanks varied from 2 to 3 liters for a total 3.2 usg or just over
20 lbs.
Is this reasonable for an ultralight or should I start cutting holes to
install lower drains?
Appreciate your opinions.

Hi trev,
I have pretty much the same setup than Leo except I don't use the Evans. No
problem with cooling either. Max temps are 220 for the oil and 220 for the
coolant. In cruise oil is around 190 and coolant around 140.
Very important in my opinion is the baffeling to the rad and a good outlet
for the air at the bottom of the cowling. The little lip is VERY important
to create a low pressure area outside of the cowling and thus suck the air
through the engine compartment (ask me how I know....)
Good luck

Listers:
One of the sources from which I buy raw materials for my business is a
Company called:
Copper and Brass Sales
They are a nationwide distributor of steel brass & Aluminum with warehouses
all over the country. I live in Las Vegas, their closest warehouse to me is
in Southern California. I had an occasion to call them today so for this
discussion I asked them a couple of questions:
1. Do you have to be a business to buy from them? Answer: "No, we will
sell to anyone".
2. As an example, please quote the following item and quantities: 6061-T6
Aluminum sheet, .016 x 48" x 144" QQ-A-250/11.
Today's price was: 5 sheets: $ 77.35 ea.
10 sheets $ 56.66 ea.
20 sheets $ 53.98 ea.
The best part of these prices is that they are DELIVERED prices to my door
from their California warehouse to my plant in Las Vegas.
Now I don't know how their freight prepaid policy works to more rural areas,
or if they do it.
Their nationwide phone number is 800-926-2600, which will ring into their
warehouse closest to you. You can check thier website at
www.copperandbrass.com
As you see from the quotes, volume is everything, but in past discussions
they said one could mix thicknesses of like material (6061T6 for example)
for the quantity discount.
I have ordered AC al for several airport friends, and always received good
price and service.

Randy L. Thwing, Las Vegas
