Hello,
I hope you guys don't mind my sending this I have just had a very good experience
with a company.
Have you heard of the Henrob welding tourch? http://www.cut-like-plasma.com/ Back in the 80's it was a Dillion Torch and the compnay was sold and the name was changed. Anyway I bought a Dillion Torch and didn't even take it out of the box for a year or two. When I tried to use it the D**m thing leaked so back in the box and on the shelf it went. Lately I ran across it an thought I ought to call the company and see if they will fix it. This is when I found out that Dillion was out of business but the guys at Henrob (the company that now makes the torch) said maybe they could fix it. So I sent it in and they just called back this morning and said the torch could not be fixed because of a defective casting. The surprise was they are sending me a new Henrob free with a lifetime warrentee. How about that? I don't even have to pay postage. I'm going to post this on several of the groups so you may see it again.

seals?
An on line chart for each would be helpful. A catalogue with charts & prices
would be better yet.

Good deal...
I bought a Henrob after I saw a pretty amazing demonstration of its
abilities.
I do use it all the time now but more out of convenience than anything
else.
For those considering one of these this is what I found...
The little cutting head is superb...I'v used it half a dozen times to
cut thick sheet.
Welding aluminium...Good luck, 'cus I couldn't do it...:)
Was it worth $300...To me actually no it wasn't. It still needs a HUGE
amount of skill to weld aluminium, which I obviously don't have. But I
have it now and it definatly comes in handy but only on pretty rare
occasions to be honest.

I sat in the Zenith demonstrator at Oshkosh 2004. I am 6'6" tall and my legs are
long. I had no problem with the width. No problem with the headroom. The
center stick is awesome for legroom. I figured I needed to do two things to
make the XL work for me. The lower edge of the pilot's side instrument panel
needs to come up about one inch (more or less) which is no problem with a VFR
only airplane. The rudder pedals in the demonstrator need to go a little further
forward (Nick Heintz says not a problem) and I am going to convert the brakes
from two Matco cylinders with reservoirs to two slave cylinders and a master
fill reservoir. I also have a 6'3" friend in my EAA chapter who scratch built
a 601HD who recommended the baggage compartment mod as described in the previous
reply. In summary, I am pretty sure I can make this all work.

to death.
Now as a totally unskilled worthless lawyer who at least acedemically
superior, could you give us all some free advice?...Acedemically seaking

So I'm about to sell me homebuilt plane, I have my house paid off and am
looking at the pleasant years of financially comfortable retirement on
the distant horizon....Namely I'm a sue magnet!
Now I got this HDS I built, lets say its worth $25k and am about to sell
it....This is not a hypothetical situation incidently.
What would YOU do in MY situation, espically if you lived in Oregon??
As I have banged on ad nauseum about vapour lock I thought this would be
an opportunity to give someone else the floor for a change...:)

consider me an anti-bloodsucker, depending upon your world view. But
then the people who sue those companies for antitrust violations think

poster was talking about protecting HIS right to sue -- presumably with
a bloodsucker leading the charge -- so I suppose he is looking to ensure
his ability to suck blood, but only if need be.

Jack,
I will be very happy to do that after I have some experience with it. Mostly I
use my regular gas outfit for cutting and brazing. I find myself mostly using
the stick welder and my mig outfit. I bought this torch originally for light
bench work. When I first tried it out it was leaking acetylene where the hose
connected so I didn't think it was a real good idea to practice with it. While
I do enjoy explosions I generally try and be a safe distance when making things
go boom <grin>
I was just amazed to get a free replacement when the company didn't have to do
anything at all.

I am not a lawyer, but her is what I would do.
1. Have buyer and all of his/her immediate heirs sign a hold harmless.
2. Have buyer pay for an additional airworthiness inspection by a
mechanic he/she chooses and pays. Have that mechanic sign something that
alludes to correct construction, etc.
3. Have buyer spend a good deal of time inspecting the airframe,
builders log, engine log, propeller log and airframe log. After a detailed
inspection of all items, have him/her sign a statement that he/she completed
a detailed and complete inspection and was satisfied with workmanship,
materials and agreed that the airplane was built according to the
manufacturer's guidelines/specifications.
4. Have buyer and/or his representative review all known AD's for
propeller, airframe and engine and inspect to ensure all have been complied
with - then sign a statement to that effect.
5. If EAA or others have a standard sellers/buyer contract, use that
one too.
6. Have heirs (not all distance ones, but the immediate ones at least)
sign an acknowledgement that they have reviewed all of the documents signed
by the buyer, understand what the buyer has agreed to and understand that
you can only be held accountable for damage that results from intentional
acts of negligence involving the airframe, propeller, engine, accessories
etc.
Then I would sell it to them and enjoy your retirement. Hell, I would
probably sell it without all of that stuff. If something happens and they
sue and I lose, Oh Well, hard to get blood from a rock and I don't have a
lot they can get.
Boy, will our academically endowed lawyer (Doug) have fun with this one.

Engine was 0 time it know has 300 hrs.The engine has been fine had some problems
with th PSRU at first but those are all resolved. If I sell the plane intact

Sorry, Mike. I didn't mean to offend anybody. I also didn't mean to
say there is anything wrong with being a civil servant (although I do
think our nation would be better off with a few less of them living
on the backs of the taxpayers). My point was only to say that the
right to sue for damages should not be your decision point when
choosing something as important as an engine for your custom built airplane.
I must wonder, though, why you think an engine failure should lead to
loss of life. I have met many people who have survived forced
landings due to engine failures over the years. My favorite
instructor had performed 14 of them by the time I knew him (he flew
ancient planes to museums for display and often had the engines blow
up on him on the way).
I guess if you feel you must sue the engine manufacturer after a
glitch kills your whole family then you would be happier buying a new
Piper or something where that is the normal way dealing with
responsibility for accidents. If you succeed in changing the amateur
airplane building environment to preserve the "Right" to make the
lawyers rich through product liability lawsuits then the result will
be the end of affordable airplanes for the rest of us.

I have a 601 HDS kit for sale. I am willing to sell everything together or sell
parts separately. One, I am willing to sell the HDS wings separately. The wings
are 75% completed with leading edge fuel tanks, landing lights, nav/strobe
light kits. Two, I will sell the fuselage with or without the HDS wings. The fuselage
(tri-gear) is approximately 50% completed. The fuselage includes wheel
fairings and an XL flap kit (for a custom HDS flap installation). Three, I have
nearly all the components for a VW engine installation. This is a great plains
kit which includes a dual ignition 2276cc with a 1.61 reduction drive, carb,
professionally weldged engine mount, zenith supplied vw cowling for the 601HDS,
and VDO engine instruments. The 2276 VW engine with a reduction drive is
worth considering for a 601HD or HDS. Four, I have lots of avionics and am placing
them up for auction on EBAY. The EBAY user id is Vbwiz2000. This is a list
of some of the items I have for sale. RC Allen Turn Coord Electric (RCA 82A-11).
RC Allen Attitude Gyro Vacuum (RCA22-7). RC Allen Dir Gyro Vacuum (RCA11A-8).

Wow...
Seems like I started a trend. What is going on in the Zodiac builder world!
Speaking from experience, you are going to have a hard to recovering 50% of your
investment on airframe parts......Maybe you will do better on avionics on E-bay,
but I think you will find that people are very particular as to their instrument
stacks, so on a "new basis" they want what they want and are not ready
to pay even a reduced amount for something that doesn't fit their mental picture.
If they are replacing an exisitng instrument you will do better.

I gotta pitch in here as a non-attorney......Remember that any contract is only
as valid as to the level that it is tested in court. Any manufacturer can have
you sign a liability release and whereas it would make recovery much more difficult
in the event something were to happen, it does not make it impossible.
The most glaring example is in that of "gross negligence." If a company is aware
of a "fatal flaw" (no pun inteneded) in their product and they take no corrective
action to address the issue then a good attorney will find a "tort" regardles
of the product liability waiver you have signed. You can sign away your
rights if you are not made aware of a known issue. The company is responsible
for full disclosure on such things.
These types of actions though will tend to be very protracted and the estate better
be prepared to dig in for a fight. I'd be willing to bet it would be settled
before it ever saw the inside of a court room though.
I remember I posted a similar question a few years back on the Facet fuel pumps
that are supplied with ZAC airframe kits. The paperwork that comes with the
pumps clearly states that the pump is not intended for use in an aircraft and
the company cannot be held liable for any injury as a result of such a use.
Wrong. But it is nice of them to say that.
I might get flamed from an attorneys on this list for making such broad statements
as a layman, and maybe deservedly so, but this is just my .02 on the topic.

the sales representative tells me that only the
thickness and type (6061-T6) is stamped. The mill
number or name is not. Should I buy small quantities
and test them first or should I make the plunge and
order a batch.

Only two weeks left to Oshkosh and the builders/owners dinner Thursday,
July 28th at Robbins Restaurant. So far we have 50 people pre-registered
for the event and normally there are a lot more in attendance. So if you

unable to attend the Dinner but are going to Oshkosh, both David and I
will be attending the Zenith booth representing Can-Zac Aviation Ltd,
which is your new Distributor for Zenith Aircraft in Canada.
New for this year at Oshkosh are the Builders Gathering events. These
are being held on Tuesday, July 26th and Saturday, July 30th from 4pm to
5pm (or longer depending on attendance). This is your time to have the
Zenith Booth (tent hangar) as a builder's meeting arena; a time to have
the Zenith crew all to yourselves and ask technical questions with the
appropriate aircraft at hand; a chance to have your picture taken with
Chris Heintz on the Tuesday, and a great place to meet other builders
and talk Zenith aircraft. This year Zenith is going to have their large
Hanger tent in the display area which will be a welcome reprieve from
the sun and elements. With the ability of having a few aircraft under
shade there is ample room for the gathering.

My $.02... Yes, i believe people should be held accountable for their actions and
even for not acting when its appropiate to act(such as inform of us a defect
etc). I see both sides,building a 701, i expect it to fly free of defects,
but also, i sold my old powered parachute last weekend and most of the bill of
sale i used was anti-liability wording. I took him on a demo flight, so he knew
i trusted it, but that's as far as i can go with assurances. I never had
a problem with it, but the buyer is never assured about tomorrow as i can't assure
it too him, a risk he was willing to accept.
If we look at most of our suppliers, we see small or family run operations. I'm
quite sure they don't have insurance to cover our exp aircraft at the low prices
we buy as compared to certified planes- liability drove up their prices back
in the 80's. Ok, if no insurance company then we go after the company directly,
which is most always an LLC(limited liability corp)...likely with few assets.
If they had good legal advice when upon opening for business, an individual
"owner and president" can own most all tools, building, etc "personally"
and then rent them back to the Corp. We would only realistically be able to
file against the LLC which sold the product. So, how much do we expect if we
lost a family member...a million or so? Where does it come from...not the LLC,
the guy owns most assets? Would it be worth it? Just a few deep thoughts.

I installed the rubber sheet around the cooler per the instructions.
I guessed at the size of the hole based on the photos.
My oil temps stabilized around 220F in cruise in the summer.
On warm days I could climb only to a few thousand feet AGL
before I had to drop the nose. If I went into slow flight mode
the oil temp would quickly drop to ~150F. But I don't want to
fly around at 50 mph. In the winter I don't have that problem.
I mentioned to Sebastian that I was considering adding another oil
cooler or replacing the one I had because of my marginal oil temps.
He was insistent that the cooler was big enough. He said that
streamlining the hole could help. He also said that the holes in the
part that goes between the oil filter and the engine may be restricting
the oil flow, some found that increasing the hole diameter helped and
suggested that I discuss that with the Jabiru rep at the airshow. Well,
I didn't do that but it got me thinking. If the oil cooler is big enough
I should be able to get it to work better.
I spent a lot of time tweaking things around the cooler over the
past year. I added angles with rubber sheet around the inside of the
hole to direct the air flow straight to the oil cooler. I tried
making the hole smaller and larger. During 200 hour engine
maintenance I did some work on the ram air ducts and lowered the CHT
some 50F. I primarily closed the gaps around the sides at the front of
the ducts and riveted aluminum strips around the rubber seals to stop
air from getting through there. That was good, but the cruise oil temp
climbed about 10F to ~230F. One day I had to throttle back to 2600 rpm to
keep the oil temp within limits. I was concerned that I'd have to keep
throttling back and go slower and slower. So I opened the oil cooler hole
back to it's original size and that helped. The CHTs were still about 250F
in cruise. But I was having to throttle back to maintain oil temps in the
green.
I knew that some air was getting through at the bottom of the oil
cooler. The sides had a good seal. I had sealed the bottom but not
good enough. Tuesday morning I cut a piece of pipe insulation
(the foam stuff that goes around a 1/2" iron pipe and in about 1"
thick) and inserted it between the bottom of the oil cooler and
the cowl. On the way to Arlington that day my oil temp was 210F
in cruise, OAT was ~60F on the ground. The day before the oil temp
was ~230F. That afternoon, it was about 80F on the ground. I climbed
south from 200ft to 3500ft at 1000 fpm and leveled off to go over
Everett's airspace. I kept the throttle at ~2800 rpm all the way
to BFI and the oil temp stablized at 220F - a definite improvement.
I know it gets hotter than 80F some places. I've flown when the OAT
was in the high 90's. My climb rate was restricted by the oil temp.
I think that now I'll be able to climb a bit longer and hopefully
make it up to cooler air before I have to level out.
I'm going to smooth out the transition between the cowl and the
oil cooler to see if I can get the oil temp a few degrees lower.
I'm making slow progress.......... I'm not inclined to spend ~$1000
for the Jabiru cowl and new oil filter. And I don't want to fabricate
a new cowl.
