There are several photo guides available on the Zenith Web site in the
builders section. The rudder photo assembly guide is there. If you don't
have access to that part of their web site, contact Zenith and they'll tell
you how to get in. I wouldn't be surprised if they print it off for you to
have at the workshop. The photo guides are are available online or on CD,
so I opted for the online method since it didn't cost anything additional.

Dave,
I got a CD but for what ever reason it was corrupt and I never got around to replacing
it. I just download and print mine off the ZAC builders section as I
progress. They're in a .pdf file again in the builder's section.

Scott. On my 801 I tried to get my static pressure from the cockpit but that proved
to make an error in the airspeed by about 12 percent so I machined a custom
one with a .040 hole in it and mounted it on the left front of the fuselage.
It is back from the firewall about 5 inches and just below the mid span longeron
that the top skin attaches too. It appears there is smooth air in that area
and my airspeed and VSI are right on the money now.

Paul . . . when I ordered the latest set of plans for my 701a few months
ago, they included a cd having the photo assembly guide. I assume this CD
is periodically updated to correspond with the plans which change in minor
ways. Call and ask them about the CD; I bet they send you one free. I
usually print in color a "chapter" at a time, eg. the fuselage, which
generally has 10 to 12 sections to it each of which is about 10 pages long.
Look ahead a bit as you go along. I think printing in color helps as there
are some small details which show up better, eg., the cleco color, which way
a flange faces, etc. Robert Schoenberger 701 55% do not archive

The problem is not the angle of the "U" on the strut. The problem is the
gear/strut fitting that is bolted to the fuselage, 7F-17. Thanks Johann, But if
I gut the small "V" the plate is still welded at both ends. I took them off
yesterday and will make new ones from scratch. ugh!
The drawings show the attach plate at 60 degrees from vertical, and I guess
I did'nt pay enough attention to that when I built them, 'cause its off by
1or2 degrees. Also found that the cabin side-to-rear fuselage is vertical(as it
should) but the area that the fitting attaches is angled in from vertical by
3 degrees, making a total error of 5 deg. It took some time to realize its
not a construction error,
but caused by the angle change of the cabin side relative to the rear
fuselage.

I left mine in the interior of the plane. It has worked well except when I fly
with the doors open. I look at it as it is all relative. It doesn't mater if
your air speed indicator shows 102 MPH or 105 MPH, you are going as fast as
you are going. If you want to get precise look at your gps. My airspeed correction
chart shows the actual speed in the 70 to 90 range. Above that I'm going
slower than shown and below that I'm going faster than shown.
This spring my son and I went flour bombing. When he opened the door all the instruments
all went wild. I just flew like I had been flying before and it was
fine. The same thing happened when he wanted to take videos of rivers to kayak.
You just keep flying by attitude and it all works out. It just like loosing
your lights at night or your pitot gets water in it and freezes. You fly
by attitude.
Just so you know the doors go open about 6-10" when you open them in the air.
It is just like when you are doing your run up on the ground with the doors open.
As you reach your hand out to touch it blows further out say 12-18". Other
than it is windy and noisy the plane flies OK.
Let me tell you as true story from 20+ years ago. My wife and I were flying our
PA-22 off the beach at Silver Salmon Creek. The plane also had the static system
inside the plane. We went fishing after work. It took a while to get all
our fish. It was in the fall so it was getting dark at night. We had to wait
for the tide to go out so we would have a beach wide enough to take off.
We wanted to get back before it was too dark so we took off a narrow beach. We
were heavy so the take off run was long. (Hence my choice of an 801.) On the
take off run I started wishing for 10 mph and 10' of altitude as we had to
follow the beach around a corner. Just then the door popped open and I got what
I wanted, 10 more mph and 10' of altitude on the instruments. We were still
rolling down the beach... The moral of the story is, when the plane is ready
to fly it will fly irregardless of what the instruments say and it doesn't matter
what the instruments say it will fly when it is ready and not before.
I have thought of gluing a hollow A-6 rivet to the side of the boot cowl.

I'm just too cheap to do color printing. I even print on both sides
of the paper (a simple option using Adobe Reader version 7 . . .
which is free for downloading).
I like the black and white laser printouts. Also, I can look at the
documents directly from the CD on my lovely LCD monitor and see them
in glorious color. I don't do this often, but I have done so when I
was even more confused than usual. On the computer, I can also
enlarge the part of interest.

Scott,
I'm using cabin air for the static reference on my 801, however the airspeed
indicator calibration might be improved by adding an external source. One
builder put static ports on the sides of the cowling, ala C172, but if I
remember right, the calibration was worse than with cabin pressure
reference.

Hi List members,
My name is Eddie Seve and I have been looking in on this list for a few
weeks now and I guess it's time I introduced myself.
I live in the Northern suburbs of Sydney and am currently flying what I
like to call a baby Pitts (Australian designed single seat biplane, tube
and fabric construction) with a Jabiru 2200 up front, my cruse speed is
around 70knots and its set-up for positive G aerobatics only.
I have looked at many of the members web sites and would just like to
say, WOW, you guys are pretty impressive, hope I can do as well when I
start construction.
I have placed an order for a Zodiac XL which should arrive in Sydney
around September 2005. I received the info package, plans and CD photo
guides from Zenair about 1 week ago and have been slowly working my way
through these.
I am hoping that you might be able to set me on the right path.
The photo guides for installing the elevator trim tab talk about and
show the installation of a recessed elevator trim, however the plans
that I received for 6-T-6 dated 02/05 show the trim located across the
entire length of one side of the elevator.
Which of these is correct, and should I get onto Zenair and ask about
this ?
Thanks in advance,
Eddie

Subject: | Battery drained? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann G." <johann@gi.is>
Hello list members.
I just took a long cross country trip on my new plane on Friday. The weather was
as good as it gets, calm winds, no turbulence and sunny with visibility 10+.
We started the trip at 5 pm and landed at 5 am and flew the hole night in bright
conditions. Had a great time, but when we were departing from the last field
before my home airstrip, the battery was dead.
The Stratomaster had indicated full 13,4 volts all the time and I never had any
trouble starting the plane during the trip, except there in the middle of the
night and nowhere to find help at any airfield. I called a friend who I knew
was awake and he brought the starter cables and we had to jump start the Zenith
701. Started right up, but the hardest thing was to re-fit the bottom plate
under the fuselage while the engine was running. Lots of screws to screw in.
I do not know why the engine is not charging the battery. Have not had the time
to measure anything, but I just thought someone could give me some ideas about
why this could be happening.
The engine is a Rotax 912 UL with standard reg/rec and hooked up according to the
Rotax manual. I do not have the extra alternator installed on the engine, and
the instruments I am using are Stratomaster EMS and the Microair transceiver.
Sometimes I turn on the fuel pump to pump from the wing tanks to the header
tank. Could this too much for the charging unit in the standard engine?
Hope you can help,
Best wishes,
Johann G.

Hello Eddie,
Welcome to the list and the Zenith builder's family. Zenith recently
changed the elevator trim tab as shown in your drawings. My guess is the
photo guide will be brought up to speed sometime in the future.

G'dy Eddie,
I have been fighting with Zenith over the trim tab design for a while now.
I strongly urge you to ask for the updated design - dated 06/05. It
has a recessed design with a nearly full length trim tab around 900
mm long. It also uses only blind rivets while the 02/05 design calls
for 9 solid rivets in the trim tab.
I just started installing mine yesterday.
For what it is worth, I had a hard time cutting out the area for the
trim tab. Shears just didn't work well. The ripped as much as
cutting. I wound up buying an air powered nibbling tool made in
Taiwan for $60 which did a great job of rough cutting the waste metal
out of place. Today I finished the cutout with shears and files.
There is also another area on the elevator that requires special
attention. It is the cutout for the rudder movement. You will find
a new strap attached to the two elevator control horns at the aft end
of each one which is supposed to be riveted to the internal
channel. Unfortunately, on my edition of the design there is no way
for this to work without changing the cutout for the rudder. I
modified my cutout to match the location of the internal cutout
instead of overhanging the channel by 3 mm. This allows installation
of the rivets in the channel with only .080 inches of shim placed
between the channel and the strap. (Sorry about not including part
numbers. I am being lazy -- my plans are out in the shop and I am
sitting comfortably in my air conditioned house. If you need more
details later, just send me an email.)
Welcome aboard, and good luck.
Paul

Johann:
If your meter showed good voltage before the start, either you have lost
plates in the battery (unlikely), or you have a loose connection in the
circuit. You need to know what the voltage indictaion was during
cranking, and where it is sensed. Too early to have corrosion or a bad
solenoid. Do you have the alternator failed light wired in - pin L to
battery?
Can only imagine what it was like under the plane putting in those
screws.......Fred Sanford.....701...California
