I pulled this statement off Don Parhams' site.
http://www.geocities.com/rfisubaru/whyBelt.html. And that's all I know
except I've had owned belt drives, one from Don and two from RAF and never
had a problem.
Highest time belt redrive we know of is from Belted Air Power. He ran
an aluminum block V8 engine 4000 hrs & didn`t even change the belt over 14
years.
This fact was featured in Kitplanes.

Apparently the quality of the belts are less then what they were years ago. It's
like anything else, water heaters used to last 20 years, washing machines and
dryers were good for 15. It seems like nothing is as good as it used to be !!!!!!!!!!!
And with the belts we "cannot" complain to the manufacturer cause once
they find out it is in a plane the fun is over........

Maybe it is just the opposite, Ben. Maybe they are better now...due to technology
and improvements due to competition, etc.
I'd like to know how old the belts were that failed and how long they had been
on the shelf before being used. From what I can see both the Jason belts and Gates
have come out with new generation belts in the last few years that are touted
to be for higher horse power and longer service. Do we have any facts on
which belts failed? I'd like to know. Don Walker

Monty:
I've purchase plenty of cut-offs from the following two ebay vendors. Do a search
on the items they are selling and you will see lots of odds and ends. Email
them with your specific needs and ask for a quote with shipping. I did this
to both of them and I think Speedymetal had the best price on the 3/4" gear
aluminum. They both ship fast and the shipping is reasonable.

I thought the following information may of some value to short or tall
pilots. My CH601HDS is to my knowledge about the same in the cabin area as
the new XL. I moved the rudder pedals as far forward as ZAC suggested. I
dropped the seat bottom to 5mm above the fuselage bottom and raised the
canopy (side opening) the MAX suggested by ZAC.
I have had two local pilots fly the plane - one at each extreme, size wise.
The first: 6' 6" tall, 245 Lbs and size 13 shoe. He is a commercial pilot
and flys a corp. jet for a living. He has over 300 type/model aircraft in
his log book. He liked the control harmony and light control forces. He
liked being able to put his feet on the floor and fly with two fingers. He
had no problem with head room and he said the leg room was no worse than 90%
of the aircraft he had flow. He said (grin) that the plane did not fly as
fast as he was used to.
The second: 5' 2" tall, 130 Lbs and size 5 shoe. He is an old hand at
scratch building - 15 planes and a local designated test pilot. No leg
reach or head room problems and he found the visibility excellent, a problem
he sometimes has. He had the same comments about handeling except he was
impressed at the speed on only 80 hp.

When I was at AirVenture yesterday, I stopped to look at the new 601 XL SLSA
aircraft being offered by AMD (Aircraft Manufacturing & Development Co.,
Inc.). The wheel pants looked much more streamlined than the set offered by
Zenith, so I asked their rep about them. He said they had another company
that designed and made them, and that in about a month or so they expect to
have them on the market for homebuilders. In case anyone is interested,
here is the contact information:

Subject: | Best Way To Store Kit |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave VanLanen" <davevanlanen@sbcglobal.net>
I'll be picking up my 601 XL kit at the August workshop. The kit will not
be crated, because the crate would not fit in my van. I'm concerned about
how I should store the kit in my garage when I get home. I'm not too crazy
about just setting items on the floor. My garage is dry, but I'm concerned
about causing damage when moving around in the garage to obtain tools, etc.
I don't want to spend time and money putting up shelving unless its
necessary. Has anyone else out there had the same situation, and what was
your solution?
Thanks,
Dave Van Lanen
