--> Zenith-List message posted by: Crvsecretary@aol.com Hello Dave: My problem isn not quite as big as yours, as I am receiveing the kit components as I can afford them. The Tail kit was not a challenge, but the wing kit does have 12 foot long components. What a coinsidence that I built a 12 foot x 4 foot workbench....the floor of the crate fit right undernieth my workbench after I stripped off the top and walls ! I would definitely inventory the contents of the crate and label each box and large component with the subassembly where it is required. Get a big Magic marker and label "WINGS" on the fuel tanks and spars, "TAIL on the horizontal stabilizer skin, "CANOPY"...etc. In the beginning you'll spend a LOT of time searching for small parts...time spent here will save you a LOT of time later...especially when you can't find something and you're not quite sure if it was in the original shipment. The factory is VERY good at shipping complete kits. My wing kit only had 1/4" grommets on backorder when I received it...and the grommets showed up in a week....no complaints from me !!! Have a great time at the workshop !! The kit will not be crated, because the crate would not fit in my van. I'm concerned about how I should store the kit in my garage when I get home. I'm not too crazy about just setting items on the floor. My garage is dry, but I'm concerned about causing damage when moving around in the garage to obtain tools, etc. I don't want to spend time and money putting up shelving unless its necessary. Has anyone else out there had the same situation, and what was your solution? Thanks, Dave Van Lanen Madison, WI 601 XL - kit ordered, attending August workshop

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Matt & Jo" <archermj@swbell.net> Time spent inventorying and organizing is worth it. I spent a whole day going through the inventory and separating parts into boxes. I did find a couple of missing parts. Called ZAC and they sent them right away. I did take some time to build shelves and I am glad I did. I also built a rack above my garage door. It is big enough to store a lot of the flat stock. I put the long pieces under my bench. It is 4 X 12 and is on wheels. The adventure begins. Good luck Matt www.zodiacxl.com > I'll be picking up my 601 XL kit at the August workshop. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Paul Hartl" <paulhartl@cox.net> Hi Dave, If you're building in a 1-car garage as I did, definitely BUILD SHELVES! You will need all the storage space you can contrive to build, and then some, before you are finished. I also found it helpful to carefully lean large sheets of aluminum that I planned to be using in the near future up against the garage wall with some of the large cardboard sheets that it was shipped in out front as protection. I am a witness to Zenith's claim that a Zodiac can be made in a 1-car garage, but that being said, it will take some ingenuity to do so, and expect to be climbing around and under that fuselage a good deal as you get near the finish line! Good luck, and have fun! - Paul -- Paul Hartl, N414PZ, 601HDS/Jabiru 3300A Flight Simulator 2002/4 Zodiac Website: www.members.cox.net/paulhartl Sun Valley, Idaho 83340 208-788-9147

Danny from Skyshops told me to buy some that are the correct length and he would reimburse me, but I am having a hard time locating them. I need an 8mm allen head bolt with a shank length of 135mm. I've already tried Aircraft Spruce and Wicks to no avail. I would appreciate any hints on where to look next. Thanks in advance, Mike Elrod

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Thilo Kind" <thilo.kind@gmx.net> Hi Mike, ACE hardware stores carry metric bolts. You also might want to try automotive stores, since most of the cars from Detroit are now build with metric stuf. Very important: on the head of the screws you will find a stamped number, typicially looking something like 8.8 or 12.10. This number indicates the mechanical properties of the bolt (tensile strength, etc.). Make sure, you buy the exact type (same number) of bolts, than what Skyshop sent you. Good luck Thilo Kind from good o'le Europe, where metric screws are not a problem at all - lot's of that stuff around. But try to find a standard screw.... oh boy ----- Original Message ----- From: <MElrod3732@aol.com> Subject: Zenith-List: Metric prop bolts-where to buy? > --> Zenith-List message posted by: MElrod3732@aol.com > > Hi fellow builders: The prop bolts that were included in the firewall > forward kit I bought from Skyshops are about 5mm too short. If my memory serves me correctly, normal hardware-store bolts have a tensile strength of 50,000 psi. The grades go up to the A/N aircraft grade bolts that have around 160,000 psi strength. I have read of an aircraft accident where hardware store bolts were used to mount a prop by someone trying to save money. He died on his first flight thanks to prop separation at low altitude. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Tebenkof@aol.com Dave, I picked my kit up the same way. Most parts I left in the boxes they came in after inventorying then (that you must do). I numbered the boxes and on the parts list in wrote in the box number for each part, to narrow the search for each later, when needed. Larger parts I hung various places on the walls or put in existing cabinets or on shelves, in each case noting on the parts list where I put the part. The skins I was able to place flat on a shelf I built under the 12x4 table I had built for construction. Good luck with it, and have fun building. One other thing. Because I picked up the kit un-crated I did not get all the scrap aluminum most people talk about fiding in the bottom of the crate. You might ask about that at the time you pick it up. It is worth having, and worth not paying shipping for later. Jim Greenough 701/PDX DO NOT ARCHIVE

We made the channels using our Brdgeport tool, because we have it, not that is needed. Thew most important thing is how to get the gear and the tool (router, good size vertical dril, etc) mated to prevent from "bouncing" or getting out of place, because can be dangerous as any power tool. At the end of each chanel, one in the fuselage side and one in the brake side we made two little holes each side of the channel to secure the line with a little of safety wire. works great. In Europe you can find all of them. Any Ultralight Club, Store or repair shop have them in stock. In propellers, Automotive Grade 5 bolts can be safely used with wood props, because once they are properly torqued, there is no shear force in the bolt. Because the complete propeller "face" will make contact with the hub and prevent it from sliping.
