Hi List for those plans builders www.ch701.com now has all the packing
lists for the CH701 kit. There are 4 files, located in the builders
resources section, a special THANKS goes to one of our Sun-N-Fun BBQ
Hosts Rick Roberts for providing the list. On www.ch601.org I have just
added a database search for the Canadian registration marks. Check the
builder's resources section there.
Thanks folks and keep the ideas and information coming, this type of
stuff will benefit all those who follow in our footsteps.

Hi All:
Someone provided a ZA eleven page 601HD kit packing list to the
CH601.org
site. For plans builders, that is an incredible piece of information.
I sure would like to see the same thing available to the CH701
plans-built
group (me included)...
Can anyone help (Via email, fax, snail mail, etc)? I would be happy to
reimburse for any associated costs in making this information available
to
all.
Thanks,

Subject: | Re: Source for Adell clamps |

I noticed a while back that a local transport truck supply store had
adel clamps that were exactly the same as the airplane clamps I bought.
Our house trailer camper also has them holding the wireing.
Here is an old message I saved with some adel clamp info from Electric Bob
Adel ClampsAdel Clamps
Everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask
by Bob Nuckolls
I've seen some conversation recently concerning "Adel" clamps and their
suitability for use around fuel, high temps, etc. I've pulled the specs and
will
excerpt some of their contents as follows:
The "Adel" clamp is more properly called an MS21919 aircraft clamp. The
company
named Adel built a goodly portion of the MS21919 clamps back in the 60's (and
may still). The term sort of stuck on these devices in spite of the fact that
they are now made by dozens of companies.
The full description for these clamps follows the convention MS21919WXXZZ
where:
W = "wedge" feature in cushion that helps prevent escape of small wires out of
cushion. Virtually all new production of MS21919 clamps below size 50 have the
wedge feature...
XX characters have the following significance:
DE = Aluminum band, Ethylene Propylene Cushion (212F)
DF = Aluminum band, Nitrile Cushion (212F)
DG = Aluminum band, Chloroprene Cushion (212F)
CE = Corrosion Resistant Steel band, Ethylene Propylene Cushion (275F)
CF = Corrosion Resistant Steel band, Nitrile Propylene Cushion (200F)
CH = Corrosion Resistant Steel band, Silicone Cushion (400F)
CG = Corrosion Resistant Steel band, Chloroprene Cushion (212F)
CJ = Corrosion Resistant Steel band, Fluorosilicone Cushion (450F)
F = Low Carbon Steel Band, Nitrile Cushion (212F)
G = Low Carbon Steel Band, Chloroprene Cushion (212F)
H = Low Carbon Steel Band, Silicon Cushion (400F)
CAUTION - Clamps with low carbon steel bands are not recommended for new
design
and most were purged from stocks back in early 80's, however, you never know
what might show up in the Fly-Market at OSH so I've included the "heads up"
here.
Cushion Application and Color Information:
Ethylene Propylene - for use in areas contaminated with phosphate- ester
hydraulic fluid and other synthetic fluids. Excellent ozone resistance., Not
resistant to petroleum based fluids. Color shall be solid purple.
Nitrile - for use primarily in fuel immersion and fuel vapors. Good ozone
resistance. Not resistant to phosphate-ester based fluids. Not for use on
titanium tubing. Color shall be solid yellow.
Chloroprene - for general purpose use in areas contaminated with petroleum
based
hydraulic fluids and occasional fuel splash. Excellent ozone resistant. Not
resistant to phosphate-ester based fluids. Not for use on titanium tubing.
Color
shall be black with a blue identifier patch.
Silicone - for elevated temperature usage in phosphate-ester based fluid and
other synthetic fluid contaminated areas. Unaffected by ozone. Not
resistant to
petroleum based fluids. Color shall be natural white.
Fluorosilicone - for elevated temperature usage in petroleum based fluid
contaminated areas. Unaffected by ozone. Not resistant to phosphate-ester
based
fluids. Color shall be solid blue.
Silicone - RED now obsolete and used only on the low carbon Steel
The last characters (ZZ) are digits describing the internal diameter of the
closed clamp in 1/16ths of an inch. E.G. an MS21219WDG4 is aluminum strap
inside
a chloroprene cushion and sized to support 1/4" diameter bundle of wires,
tubing, etc.
I note that the spec does not speak to the "red" cushions currently being
discussed. I recall seeing a number of clamps with red cushions over the years
but quite frankly, I don't know if they were MS21919 or perhaps some other
part
number.
UPDATE: All of the "reds" have been purged from Raytheon's stocks, couldn't
even
find one in the junk boxes that I had access to. Mr. Sobek says the one he
found
does carry the part number MS21919H** which tells us it is indeed the
obsolete,
low carbon steel version and silicon rubber (not recommended for use where
"wet"
with hydrocarbons.

I am in the process of installing the vacuum lines on
my 601 XL, and need to connect a 3/16" diameter OD
aluminum tube to the 1/4" OD Flexible Nylon Tubing
that came from ZAC in the kit. I installed a Dynon
AOA Pitot Tube with the 3/16" tubing connection
instead of the ZAC supplied pitot with the 1/4" steel
lines. And they supplied a piece of flexible plastic
tubing that just slipped over both 1/4" lines to
connect them together. The Dynon instructions suggest
an AN 919-2D connector to go from 3/16" to 1/4". I
assume this takes a flaring tool? Will a hardware
store flaring tool do the job for this? And what
about the end that attaches to the Nylon Tubing from
ZAC? What sort of connections should I use to connect
this? Does this stuff flare and get clamped with a
nut too?

Don,
I think a hardware store flaring tool is 45 deg and for AN fittings you will need
37 deg.
I purchased a static, and dynon pitot/aoa install kit from safeair1.com. It has
the AN fittings and some cool connectors to transition the dynon pitot aluminum
tubes to the 1/4" tubing very nicely. I had called him with a few questions
and got some good answers and very pleasant at that. I would call him and
see if you can just get just those parts that you need. I will be borrowing a 37
deg flaring tool as I'm using the rubber fuel lines in my kit, but if you are
doing aluminum lines it would be worth buying.

Dear Thread Friends, the unending saga of teeking the beast continues. I have
a vac pump on my 3300, regulator and gauge for my DG. Wish now I didn't have
any of it. Still, I have to make everything work, and work well. The DG seems
to turn well and stay on with the compass at least for the 1.5 hour longest
flight I''ve made. Problem is the gauge shows a bit less than 5 pounds and that
is the start of the green ban. What should it be making? The PA-28 i've flown
most vac was about 5.5 pds. If it is low, but the DG seems to work ok, does
the regulator still need to be adjusted up ? Will failure to go 5.5 pounds
damage any of the pieces ? Frank, what do you think ? Best regards, Bill of

Bill,
We often have to adjust the regulator on the vac systems to get a bit more
vacuum. Just bend the lock tab down on the reg and turn clockwise a half
turn. Then try it out and see if you have enough. Might take a couple of
tries to get it where you need it.

I was one of the very first of the XL bunch. In fact,
the entire rear fuselage got redesigned by ZAC after I
had already built it, and I had to start over at one
point. Not fun. At the time they even tried to talk me
into going with the HDS instead, but the mule in me
insisted I was staying with the XL. Probably the same
mule that convinced me Enron stock was undervalued and
would recover some day.
Anyway, still plugging along. What started as a cool
idea to build my own plane, has turned into an
obsessive compulsive disorder that I need to resolve
no matter what the cost. (So far I've managed to steer
clear of therapy)

The William Wynne Corvair conversion uses a direct drive short prop hub
bolted directly to the end of the crank. Here is the part (in his online

His web site is full of useful information, and his conversion manual has
even more. I just returned from a quick visit to his hangar today.

You might want to consider using some sort of reduction unit so your

All-
Just finished installing a scratch-built baggage hatch on left wing. Four observations:
1. Don't worry about the creases in the bottom corners. After you have it Zdused
down the first time, lightly tap the corners with a plastic mallet.
2. I don't know if they've updated the Zenith plans to include this by now
(I didn't scratch-build new hatches for my health!!) but the whole secret to getting
the Zdus to work is keeping the 5/16" hole on the hatch itself, but drilling
a 3/8" in the skeleton.
3. Nowhere in my revision of the HDS plans does it tell you to match-bend the
L angles to the adjacent ribs. Do it.
4. There are three different L angle layouts in the plans. I wound up incorporating
elements of all 3, which is probably too heavy. Check out Mac's angled
layout.

Paul,
The Corvair/601 combination is a pretty good match without going to the
complexity, weight, and cost of a PSRU. The tri-gear Corvairs are already
swinging a 66 inch prop which is about as much as you'll be able to put on a
601 without then having to modify the gear to get back your ground
clearance.
I like the simplicity of the direct drive. The weight of the WW conversion
doesn't cost you a lot of usable load and should work out about 20 pounds
lighter than an O-200 except that I now see that the factory 601 LSA has a
new lightweight O-200 so that may not be relevant any more.
Bill,
As Phil Maxson mentioned, WW's conversion manual has all the details and is
a good read even if you aren't ready to make the decision. William presents
a fairly balanced discussion on not just the Corvair but on a few related
aviation topics.

OK, I'll be the first to admit I know very little about the Corvair
engine (except it is the only car engine I have ever burned up -
broke the fan belt while driving a real Corvair).
My thinking was that most auto engines build power to a peak around
5000 RPM but most propellers work best around 2600 RPM. I was under
the impression that to get maximum power out of any auto engine you
needed to reduce the engine RPM to get an idea prop RPM.
Where did I go wrong? Isn't it customary to install a reduction unit
on any engine other than a purpose built aircraft engine?
