--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bima, Martin" <mbima@hydro.mb.ca> The Cessna Aeroplane Company has been making beautiful, reliable aircraft for decades. Piper, Mooney, Maule, and many others have done the same. These aircraft are an excellent investment as they seem to only increase in value year after year. They can be bought ready-to-fly from thousands of locations around the world. If you have decided to build your own aircraft, you have embarked on a glorious journey that only an infinitely small fraction of the human race can even fathom. Whether plans or kit-built, you are going to poor your sweat, blood, tears and most of your wallet into your pastime. If you are not ready to ride the highs and lows of aircraft building, perhaps a ready-made aeroplane would suit you best. I must admit that I navely entered the plans-building field because I knew I could never afford my own "real" plane. Here was a way to fly cheap. I was handy, but not at all trained in metal work, welding, electronics nor engines. But the experience (even after making many parts twice, building 5 spars and assembling each wing 3 times and redesigning the engine mount 4 times and building it twice) is something I will never regret. I am already dreading the day when the craft is finished (sometime in the next 1 to 5 years) because I know my garage will be void of anything that has to be welded, or sanded, or riveted or wired. Then again, my kids would really, really love a little dune buggy. IT IS NOT THE DESTINATION, IT IS THE JOURNEY. Martin Bima STOL-Vair 701 www.mts.net/~embima Do not archive

Aircraft Spruce has it for $7.70 per can, by the time you add shipping costs it is around $12. Check with some of your local marine dealers as the also use this on aluminum boats. Dan N987PD

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Roger Nyholm" <pecosrog@earthlink.net> I've been lurking for some time and just getting started on a 701 from a kit. A question about zinc chromate, does the spray can stuff still available work anything like the old yellow and green primers in the gallon cans? Any good alternatives other than the sticky stuff ZAC had at their class? What's the name of the stuff you were using, Hal? On another note, I saw a 701 on floats listed for sale on ebay this morning. Best regards and thanks for any advice, Roger Nyholm 701 kit just starting Do not archive

--> Zenith-List message posted by: JAPhillipsGA@aol.com Roger, I primed every piece of aluminum that touched another piece and I used six cans of spray for my XL. Fact is can number six is still about half full. The spray is quick and easy to apply and dries pretty fast. I have heard it is cheaper at boat marinas, but I have seen it sold over the counter at Keystone Paint Stores, FWIW, Bill of Georgia

I like the cans better, but the one drawback is that if you don't use them for a while, the nozzle tends to dry up to the point where it won't spray any more. I have several cans lying around that have dried up, and no matter what I use to clean the nozzles (paint thinner, Goof-Off, etc), they won't clear. But if you plan to use it right away, spraying the stuff works better (respiration issues aside). Mike Fortunato 601XL __________________________________

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Hal Rozema <hartist1@cox.net> Dear Paul and anyone else interested: Sorry if I misled you all, I was wrong (with certain reservations). Here is a copy of what I learned. Maybe you can butter up your DAR, but I don't think so as responsibility would fall on him for anything unseemly. Hello Hal, Unfortunately, the FAA does not consider "record keeping" (reading gauges, noting temperatures, and other data gathering) to meet the requirement for requiring a second person in the aircraft during the flight test period (regardless of whether the person participated in the building of the aircraft or not). Except in VERY rare circumstances, the FAA considers that, if the aircraft does not require two pilots during normal operations, then it does not require two persons on board during the flight test period. However, that being said, if you can get the FAA to specifically write an operating limitations allowing the second person to be on board during the flight test flying, then it would be allowed. But without having this specifically spelled out in the operating limitations, there's no way to carry another person in the aircraft during flight testing. Hope this helps! Naumuk" <billn@velocity.net> All- I can't speak for how well it's going to work in the long run, but rather than pay $50 for a high-tech respirator, I spent a buck a can more for the new Zinc Oxide corrosion protectant, which is much more eco and lung friendly. I still use a disposable mask, and to date have only sprayed outside in the back yard. Since I'm 600 miles from the nearest salt water, I don't know if I really need it, anyway, but better safe than sorry. Part # 7-9100 at Aircraft Spruce. As far as clearing the nozzle is concerned- when all else fails, read the instructions. Turn the can upside down and push the button until you get nothing but compressed air (Or Freon, or whatever the propellant is) coming out. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Tebenkof@aol.com DO NOT ARCHIVE Just one more comment on the folding wings, for what it is worth. When I asked about them 2 1/2 years ago at the rudder workshop I was actively discouraged from considering them. I forget whether it was Nick or Sebastion, but someone told me not to bother, that it is as easy to remove the wings without the kit. Jim 701/Portland

    Subject: Spray can nozzles
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Graham Kirby" <Graham@601hd.com> For those debating Tempo Spray primers, my experience has been that the Zinc-Chromate cans are much less prone to clogging than the Zinc-Oxide. I have had to ditch at least half a dozen part used tins of Zinc-Oxide and I am always careful to make sure the nozzles are cleaned correctly and the paint is well mixed before I use them. Subject: Anyone Know The Story Behind This Crash?
--> Zenith-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle) Hi Listers, Does anyone know the story behind this aircraft and the crash? Almost looks like an RC model especially given the cameraman's rather unemotional comment following the crash. Kind of looks like the elevator may have been hooked up backwards following a rebuild. http://media4.big-boys.com/content/oldplanecrash.wmv Any information on this video would be intersting.
