--> Zenith-List message posted by: Hello Jeff. I have not had much experiance in my 701 but I am 6'1" and weigh around 190 lbs. I flew with a 230 lbs. guy in a 10-15 knots wind and around 50 deg F. The engine is a Rotax 912 UL. We had 5 gallons of fuel and the performance was ok. Around 500 feet climb performance and used only 150 feet for take off on a paved surface. I would like to see other aircraft do that. I have the curved doors so the shoulder width is fine with two persons of this size. I can not say if you will be confortable with the knees and the dash, but you could do some modifications on the seats and dash to soute your needs. I think the Zenith 701 is a great performer with this setup. Best of luck with your decision. Johann G. Iceland. www.gi.is/fis > > I'm giving very serious thought to building a CH701. Thanks to all and especially to Matt for this most valuable source of information. However, I'm a slow builder working from partial kits. Now I ordered my outer wing kit and got a lead time of 3 months. This is a long time without aluminium toys in the shop, even for me. I have to buy from Czech Aircraft Works via the local dealer (Germany). Is this long lead time common elsewhere? Is a down payment for a partial kit common? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Crvsecretary@aol.com Hello Peter, and welcome ! Lead times vary, but I suspect yours is longer than most for a variety of reasons: - the summer months are the BUSY months at the factory - factory resources are limited - even though all orders are build-to-order, XL demand is far greater than HDS demand and if there is a part or component shortage, that will extend lead times - I'm guessing your 3 month lead time includes transit time across the pond via ship, and that takes 5 weeks I waited 8 weeks for my wing kit, and that was in May ! The kit is worth the wait. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chip W. Erwin" <aircraft@czaw.cz> Dear Peter, Czech Aircraft Works builds many Zenair aircraft from scratch each and every month. We have a very large stock of parts to support our production. For the few customers in Europe that choose to build from a kit we can deliver 2 days from the order. Everything you need except for the outboard wings is here and in stock. As we do not make the HDS wings we have to buy these ribs from Zenith. That is the reason for the delay. And yes, deposits are common for special orders. I am sure we can ship you the HDS o/b wing kit sooner than 3 months but we like to make conservative estimates. While you are waiting for your wing parts we can supply you with any other items or sub kits including firewall forward packages, instruments, upholstery kits, etc. Regards, CHIP Chip W. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Zodie Rocket" <zodierocket@hsfx.ca> Hi Jeff, as a 701 sits you should be able to fit into it but may feel a bit cramped, one of the great things about building your own aircraft is the fact that you can make it fit your needs, not every person is built the same. For shoulder width, you need to add the new bubble doors, though I would make that recommendation to ANYONE with a 701, there just too nice, and allow a full 44" across the whole shoulder and upper arm area. Headroom is not a problem up to a 7' person. Rudder pedals can move 3" closer to the firewall, panel could be re-positioned a bit away now that there is no header tank, that is more then enough to accommodate your size with room to spare. Another thought would be to add electric flapperons then the seat pan could be lowered significantly, which would increase leg and head room. Have a seat in a 701 with all these things in mind, you will discover that there can be more room in a 701 then in the 601 with a few minor changes, or you may find that it fits quite well, really depends on what your used to. If you are used to a Cessna 150 then the 701 will be big, If your used to a Cessna 185 then a couple of changes mentioned above will give you the same feeling of room. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Nelson" <scottn@dramaworks.ca> Hi, I don't own a 701 but I did sit in one at the eaa this year for about 20 mins. I'm 6'4" about 200lbs. I found that in the 'passenger/co-pilot' seat the steel tube brace which crosses diagonally would rub my head if I sat upright, but in the pilot seat it wasn't an issue since it doesn't cross this area. Also, it was mentioned that if you install electronic flap control you can lower the seat pan a couple more inches. With the bubble doors installed it is really quite nice inside. I spent most of my eaa time actually sitting in many ultralights / kit planes for this exact reason. At 6'4" it's hard enough to find a car to fit in and an ultralight is even harder. So, the 701 was actually the roomiest plane out of all the ultralights I sat in. Some are so small inside that my head had to stick out of the cockpit window or you need to somehow bend in half but still see forward at the same time..... -----Original Message----- From: owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Jeff Francis Subject: Zenith-List: CH701 Pilot Height/Weight Questions --> Zenith-List message posted by: Jeff Francis <jfrancis@gmail.com> I'm giving very serious thought to building a CH701. I am lowering the seat pan, raising the ceiling and dumping my bulky headset for an in-the-ear solution. I have also increased the useful load of my plane by investing in a treadmill and eating a salad once in a while. So far, I have increased fuel load by almost 3 gallons. Martin www.mts.net/~embima

I was 235 once at 6'1" and now at 195, eat lots of salads, run 2 miles every other day. Harder to do at 66, but so's loosing weight at my age having to pass by the cookie jar 20 times a day. Do you like the "headset in the ear solution" and is it effective with the Zenith prop/engine you use? I'm considering a set for wife and I and was concerned about not wanting to have any more hearing loss. My inseam is 32" I moved the pedals forward about 3" my knees clear the dash panel just fine but my legs come nowhere close to being able to extend straight, my head is 2" from the ceiling with no padding in the seat. You are more that welcome to try mine on if you are near southern lower Michigan Roy 701 plans

--> Zenith-List message posted by: <jeffglass@starband.net> I'm 6' and weigh 225. I fly a Ch601 HDS and headroom is a problem. I use the LightSpeed L1 "in-ear" passive headset. I'm quite happy with it. I've read reviews that say the Auricom headset is better, but I haven't been able to try it. Price is about the same for each unit. The new LightSpeed in-ear system is called the Mach 1 and costs about $525 retail. It's gotten rave reviews from guys who bought it at Oshkosh. Whatever you do, stay away from Panther brand. They have a custom earpieces but it takes 6-8 weeks to have it made and then many people have had problems with the electronics. The company is not particularly customer oriented, and getting them to acknowledge a problem is very hard. I had ordered on of their headsets and than canceled the order. I had to pay in full, up front. It took 7 months to get a refund and then only by intervention of American Express. So, your best choices are Lightspeed and Auricom. Lightspeed is really a stand up company. I had one of their older headsets and it just sort of died. I sent it in for repair and they sent me a refurbished set ...at no cost... My L1 set developed a short and when I called it in for warranty instructions they said send it back... And sent me a new set overnight at their expense. If cost isn't an issue I'd go with the new Mach 1 from Lightspeed... --> Zenith-List message posted by: "John Anderson" <ande437@bellsouth.net> Hi, Just finished the 42 nd delightful hour on my Revmaster 2100DQ powered 601HD. Finished it in the spring and flying it has brought only pleasant surprises. Just acquired an 0-235 and would like comments from 0-235/601HD owners on prop brand and specs. Maybe what performance you get with yours. I would like to be in the middle of the cruise/climb range without buying several props. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Randy Stout <n282rs@earthlink.net> Hi John Don't leave us hanging like that. What kind of performance are you getting with the 2100? Apparently you are not that happy with it since you are looking at replacing it. I had a 2180 with a redrive on my HD. Takeoff was very impressive, but forward speed was not. In order to go above 90 mph I had to nose down. Also, I could not keep it cool enough. I ended up replacing it with a Corvair. Have you considered a ground adjustable? I'm not sure if there are any HD's with an o-235. I suspect that the performance will be similar to my Corvair conversion. I have a 64" Warp Drive ground adjustable prop on it. On a hot day, I get 700 fpm @ 65 mph and a max speed of 120 mph if very light. I took it up to 7500 ft the other day and was getting 105 mph at full throttle, which I'll take as 75% cruise. In level flight at lower altitudes, I have to pull back the throttle a bit to keep from red lining the engine. I could add some more pitch, but I like the climb where it is to get me above the South Texas heat quickly. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeffrey Glasserow" <jeffglass@starband.net> I've got an HDS with an 0-235 C2C. I use a 3 blade Warp Drive ground adjustable prop set at 14.5 degrees for pitch. I get 800-1000' FPM at 80 mph indicated. Gross weight, temp, density altitude, etc.does effect climb but not that much. Top speed at 75% is an honest 110-112 mph. Up higher at 7500' I also get about 105 indicated.
