I had the same problem with my 701/912s. I have the slipper clutch. I had to
replace 7H2-6 both LH and RH. After de-skinning the top skin of the
Horizontal stab, I also found a crack inside the stab. The cracked brackets were
found during preflight. I installed a gusset plate (.040 2024-T3) from the attach
bracket to the top fuselage stringer. This will share the load, add
redundancy, and hopefully won't happen again. I will send pics to those that request
them.
Phil Lockwood suggested I send the 912s gearbox in for new clutch disc
springs. He said the springs weaken after 300 hours or so and this results in
harsh start up and shut down. I also installed the new high torque starter. He
said expensive sprague clutch problems can result if the original lower torque
starter is combined with worn clutch springs over time.
The gearbox is simple to remove and Lockwood turned it around in a day. The
price was less than $100.
I am preparing to replace my 22001-13 Barry mounts as well. They have them
at Wicks. I don't know if they are worn, but they are cheap enough to replace.

This worries me a bit!!! I have the 912S on a 701 with 128 hours on it. I checked
those brackets carefully before I flew last night and there is no sign of cracking
or fatigue. Is there something that I could do now to reduce the possibility
of a fatigue crack there? I would like to see pictures of where the cracks
actually occurred also.
My engine starts quick with not too much vibration, but once a carburetor poppped
off during start and about shook my teeth out. (they are now supported with
a bracket so that won't happen again)

Bill,
When's the last time you saw a Cub or Champ that was manufactured
after 4/11/96? There seems to be a new set of rules for planes built
after that date. Check out the article on IFR flight for experimentals
in the Sept05 issue of EAA Sport Aviation, especially the chart on p68
(item 11). The article is primarily about IFR but the chart also
covers equipment requirements for VFR.

Hi all,
My name is Ed Moody II and I have been lurking on the Zenith discussion site
trying to see where the warts and wrinkles are in the 601 XL. So far it seems
that it is a kit with the same problems as pretty much every kitplane.
I am planning a trip to the factory to fly the demo soon but would really like
to know if there are other builders or flyers in Louisiana, preferably near
the Lafayette area. If someone near here could tolerate an interested listener,
I'd like to hear what he has to say.
Thanks,
Ed Moody II

Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that we have started a new Yahoo Group for the
STOL CH801.
The 801BUILDERS group is a place for anyone who is building, owns, flies,
loves, or even just has an interest in the Zenith CH 801! You can share
information, tips, ideas, helpful hints, frustrations, pictures, links, and
other resources about the Zenith CH801.
You can check it out at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/801BUILDERS/
This Group is not affiliated with Zenith Inc. nor is the contents of this
Group, approved by Zenith Inc. It is also not intended to replace the main
Zenith Matronics mailing list, http://www.matronics.com/z-list/index.htm.
Due to spam, this Group is restricted, meaning that membership needs to be
approved. This cuts down on bogus members and messages. Please don't let
that stop you from joining though!
And, be sure to visit our sister Group, 701BUILDERS, for information on the
two place CH701.

I decided to have a marine upholstery shop (I do live in Florida you know) fabricate
carpet inserts to install in the wing lockers instead of gluing the carpet
panels to the wing structure.
I provided them with the pattern and outdoor carpeting (Home Depot, of course)
to fabricate liners which should slip in pretty easliy. An interesting question
did arise however that I wanted to pass along to the list;
Has anyone had an issue with compliance to FAR 25.853 [a], [b] (fire protection)?
Has anyone who is up and flying with the wing locker option, who lined said
compartments with carpet, run into any certification problems with the FAA?
I did order a bottle of "Inspecta-Shield" Fire Retardant Penetrant from Aircraft
Spruce with the intention of applying this the the carpet to meet said requirements.
(part # 09-05760, $14.15/Qt)
I was just curious to see if this issue has been addressed previously.

Here are the pics of the mod I did. I used one gauge thicker for the angle
brackets 7H2-6. I also added an .016 angle to the back of the stab spar
attached to the inboard ribs. I received approval from ZAC for this. The gusset
I
added I didn't ask for approval on. I did however send them pictures of the
complete repair.
All the best

Hi Tom,
I don't know if Sun Valley (actually Hailey) qualifies
as "nearby", but I have just finished a 601 HDS and
am in the test flight phase - 5.2 hours so far. I
started in 1998, and finished last month. I'm pretty
busy during the school year ( I teach Physics at a
small private school in Sun Valley), but you're
welcome to come up this way anytime if you want to
see a finished 601 up close. Also, a friend who lives
in Ketchum, Win Ellis, just finished his 701 this
summer, and is also in the test flight phase.
This Matronics list itself is the single most helpful
source of info I found during my building time, as
many on it are quite experienced and accomplished
builders, so, in general, I would ask questions of the
group. I'd be glad to answer anything I can, but I'm
just one builder, and not particularly expert at
anything, so I may not your best source - but email,
phone or stop by, I'm also happy to throw in my 2
cents worth!
