Hi everyone,
I'm just starting the rudder for a CH601HDS.
I will be using a Jabiru 2200 85hp engine.
Does anyone have any performance specifications for this setup and if so
please let us know.
Building this kit with this engine is very affordable for me!!
Also I noticed the rudder control horn doesnt come with the rudder kit.
Can anyone explain this and how it gets attached later? Also the internal
fairing for the lower part of the rudder isnt supplied with the rudder
kit???
Cheers,

Matt,
The upper rudder hinge for the purpose of pivot, is not going to get 2D
edge distance on this part. I don't think
it's critical because the rudder doesn't load like structural
connections of most other pieces. The
added thickness is probably a good thing for the sake of wear,
disassembly etc. My drawing shows the same
condition.

but when laying it out I noticed that there is no way to maintain a 2 d edge
distance with a 1/4 hole and maintain the 11 mm spacing. I noticed that the
latest revision to the drawings have increased the thickness of this part from
1/8 to 3/16. I have emailed ZAC and am waiting for their reply. I am not sure
if I just got a bad part or what.

I bought the complete kit, and picked it up at the
factory in Febuary of this year, after attending the
in-house rudder build class. And these parts were not
included in my kit when I got it home and inventoried
it. So I called the factory and they told me it was
an error on their part, and mailed it right out to me.
Got it in two days. You don't install these parts at
the rudder workshop, so they don't put these parts in
with the rudder package for some reason. And always
forget them later when assembling the rest of the
parts package.

Darin,
Without knowing the specific performance spec for the 2200 equipped HDS,
I'd recommend considering all choices along the way, that you build the
plane as light as possible. 85 HP is enough power for the HDS if it
isn't loaded with every thing that can be put into one of these.
Not sure why the rudder horn hasn't been included, but it isn't hard to
make and if you look closely in the drawings,
you'll see it riveted to the bottom of your rudder. The inside forward
fairing skin is but a rectangular patch that
can be added after your rudder is fitted to allow you to get clearances
as needed. Leave those holes open til you
get there.

If you need any more help or visualization, please feel free to visit my
site and you'll be able to see where these parts go.
(check the rudder page) and if you have questions, please ask.
Good luck and welcome to the Zenith group

Saw some as are used on fabric aircraft.....fellow used the plastic/nylon rings
glued to inside of inspection hole to provide a "lip" for the keepers on purchased
plates. Seemed to work well, think he used epoxy on the rings.
Since you won't be removing these on a daily basis it seems okay.
Allow some room for the use of wrenches/ratchets, etc since you are free to decide
on the placement of the holes.

John & Zenith builders/fliers:
I haven't posted for a while, I wait until a thread is started then answer~~
John's message is shortened for the list.
As many of you know, I produce an angle of attack system, the RiteAngle IIIb.
This system is vane operated and has worked flawlessly on aircraft from
Ultralights to 16,000# Borate Bombers to nearly all models of Lancair, RV, Europa,
KitFox, Glasair and quite a few Zenith aircraft, one Zenith has been flying
the system for at least 5 years.
The only problem my customers have is with the setup of the system, it must
be done by the book or it will not work, similar to a computer setup. I am now
working with a Zenith customer who has a setup problem and trying to resolve
it. The system is self testing so it even tells you what the basic problem is
in an audio along with the flashing LED's. We correct for up to 6 positions
of flaps which is mandatory if the AOA is accurate in all flap settings.
When setup the system is flawless in operation Drop a line or e-mail after
viewing our website www.riteangle.com Elbie Mendenhall EM Aviation, LLC
************
John Buttterfield's comments, which echo mine 1000%:
One thing i have noticed is the lack of discussion
regarding angle of attack instruments.
If i had a choice between my airspeed indicator or my
AOA failing, i would certainly choose the AOA as my
primary speed indicator. After a few hours in our
machines, we know about what the speed will be at any
given power setting. When in the slow speed mode, the
a/s indicator is fairly unreliable. the AOA is never
wrong, (assuming is is set up correctly) it will
always indicate the best speed for any weigth and
atmospheric conditions. Actually, ater you get used
to it, landing become very precise and at the proper
speed.
When i flew (USMC)in military aircraft, we usually
added 10kts for the wife and 10 for each kid. Of
coarse this is a joke, but landing at the proper speed
is safer and much easier on the aircraft. Short field
landings, are the norm (if desired).
I only feel confident in giving advise to this group
regarding the AOA. I am humbled by the knowledge you
have regarding building and flying the Zenith
products, I would put the AOA as the best insurance
for safe flying. It works all the time and should be
your primary stall waring devise in all aspects of
flight.
To those who have not used an AOA, take the time to
try one out. To those who have, your opinions should
be voiced.
best regards to the group.

Hi List
I have 105hrs on my 601HD. I was going to write a report about how well and
how much fun the plane is to fly, but something happened this weekend that
has kind of shook me up. I went out of town this weekend for a much needed
get away. I left my key so that a friend could fly my plane while I was
gone. He is a young man with several hundred hours of flying time and a
graduate of an Aeronuatical university. We had flown together for probably
10-15 hrs so he was familiar with the plane.
When I got home Sun. I saw a picture of my plane in the local paper on a 4
lane highway with a headline saying the plane had an engine failure and was
forced to land on the highway. Thankfully no one was hurt and the plane was
not damaged. He actually made a remarkable engine out landing about a mile
from the runway. When I got up with the pilot he said the engine sputtered
and quit and he didn't know why. I figured it had to be electrical or a fuel
problem. I was right. He had run the plane out of fuel. The wings had to be
removed and put on a truck back to the airport. Unfortunately instead of
disconnecting the wires and tubing, they just cut them.
He and his passenger were very lucky, and I am pretty lucky too. I'm
reporting this to say be careful who you let fly your plane, and please make
sure you check your fuel before leaving. I will be back up and flying
probably by the end of the week but I'm not sure I'll let anyone else fly my
plane again unless I'm with them. I know stuff happens, but this was just
plain stupidity.

Sure glad it seems to have worked out well. The damage to both your plane

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like everybody agrees that the Skyshops kit

also ordered the seats, electric flap actuator and strut fairings. $6000 worth, dang,
this building airplanes hobby sure gets expensive!! Wait a minute... didn't
I order the COMPLETE kit from Zenith 2 years and 1200 hours ago?? and I
still gotta buy the 912 engine, bubble doors, avionics etc.etc. Oh well, I'm
having fun anyway, at least until the wife finds out. just hope this thing flys
someday. Thanks for all ya'lls advice.

Larry, you really are going about this accounting business all wrong. I

Two words: Checklist trainning...
One old local pilot said once, that the new cars are so "automatic" (even the lights
turn on and off auto), new oils need no change until you service the car,
engine thermostats, lifetime bateries, etc
That are making people the "sit and go" style of driving... Remember when we
used to check the oil, the battery and radiator water level, every saturday,
Tube tires need to check the pressure every fill up, Now the cars need no warming
in the morning (maybe in North USA or Canada)... Etc.
This has a big impact in young flyers, we need to force them (as well as all of
us, of course) to do the CORRECT and COMPLETE preflight and checklist(s) everytime
we fly, just as the Instructor used to train us and force us in school...
Congratulations for you and your pilot, Just got a "new" airplane.

Hello Gary and list members.
Speaking about a check list. Does anyone have a check list for the Zenith
701?
I would like to see what you have made for your plane. Am working on one for
myself, and any input would be appreciated.
Best regards,

From: "Darin McLEAN" <darin@dm-electronics.com.au>
Subject: Zenith-List: CH601 HDS with Jabiru 2200 performance
Darin-
I'm also considering a 2200 in an HDS, and contacted JabiruUS. First, I
wanted to know why a firewall forward package wasn't offered on their
website. Pete got back to me and said it was an oversight- yes, it is
available. Second, I asked whether the numbers you can find on the Zenith
website claiming a 95 SMPH cruise were accurate. He suggested I check out
Cletis Lamm's site at c.lamm@insightbb.com for real-world numbers with a
2200 installed in an HD. I originally was going to go with a Subaru
installation, but with all the overheating problems posted (I've driven
Subarus for years and continually have to replace thermostats) and the added
complexity of a redrive, I decided to check out other options. I still have
time to make up my mind.
But- they must sell Jabirus down under for half of what you pay up here
if it's "Very affordable" for you! There's someone selling a 0 time chromed
O-235 Lycoming in this month's Sport Aviation for $7000! Or was selling-
it's probably history by now.
As far as fairings are concerned- I haven't yet met or corresponded with
anyone building an HDS that hasn't plugged up the holes CH left flapping in
the wind near the centerline of the elevator. Don't be afraid to build what
you need yourself. (I'm speaking cosmetic touches here- build to the prints
for everything else).
Finally, if it weren't for Larry Mac, I would have quit long ago. Just
don't expect painting tips from him.
Basement, Igor, and don't forget the drill battery pack this time!

Thanks Larry, I got a reply from ZAC. (not bad within 24 hrs) and said:
The reason for the increase in thickness was for the LSA to help reduce the
wear on the busing 6B2-8. The parts shown in the 2nd edition of the XL
drawings do not have to be changed. Ref. 6B2-7 edge distance of 8mm is good
with material thickness t=.125"

Yes Johann,
I made one, (in spanish), is a "Pilot Manual" and "Check list" in one. I will
translate it to english and send it to you in a few days,
What you like? Word *.doc or Adobe *. pdf format?
We need one for the paperwork for the register number.

Get your bubble doors from SkyShops too. They are about 1/2 price of
Zenith's. I like the full view you get with Zenith doors, but that's all.
The SkyShop doors are half and half. The SkyShop doors are a better deal,
they come with gas shocks. Zenith uses a suckion cup to hold the doors
open.
Another thing to consider is that SkyShop uses Lexan whereas Zenith use
plexaglass. I like Lexan better for doors because it has some flex in it,
plexagass is brittle and cracks easy. Lexan scatches easier, but, it will
stop a speeding bullet.
If I had to do it over, I'd go with SkyShops.

Hi Frank
The FAA was notified. They were more impressed that he made a safe landing
and no one was hurt. The only thing they suggested was not to rely on the
fuel gauge and always stick the tank.. I have the sight gauge which is real
accurate on the ground but does bounce during flight. I've never had a
problem running out or low on fuel. I also have checklists which were not
used this time. The more I think about what happened, the more pissed off I
get. I don't understand how someone could be so negligent especially with
his hours of flying and the education he has. He still doesn't get how
serious this mistake was and is more focused on his piloting skills in
making such a great emergency landing.

Lance. Congratulations. Building was a wonderful adventure. I expect that you will
find flying even better. I look forward to sharing the sky with N601LG.
Frank - N601RT has CS #8 torx head screws securing the top forward skin. Zenair
approved this using nutplates and with the same spacing as the plans documented
rivets. ==100 nutplates! You probably did not notice this on my plane because
you were concerned about all the extra $tuff I put in the panel, or because
N601RT sucks fuel to the firewall through a fuel selector valve, fuel filter
and fuel flow transducer from a wing locker tank or either of the leading edge
tanks. ;-)

Roy

Hello Professor,
With all my respect, Just a short advise (of course do what you decide)
Tell him to build his own airplane... Excess of confidence is the biggest danger
in aviation, and sadly bright kids got LOTS of it...
Also, Remember him, like Richard Bach said in one of the chapters in his book
"Gift of Wings" something like this:
(Not exactly, not reading it, but got deep inside my brain) (He compared very
seroiusly Aviation with Religion) (Also I read it in Spanish)
"Aviation will kill you without merci if you brake the Law..." "No fair trail".
Well this is the message I got in that books chapter,
I read the book several years ago, and several times... and still remeber lots
of chapters, If you find the book, give it to him as a night reading, you
read it first and will enjoy most of it. Each chapter is a complete history...
Check in Amazon the "Spotlight Reviews"

Disclamer: I dont sell Amazon Books or recieve a share... :-) :-)
Saludos
Gary Gower.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bob Tezyk" <bob@eaglesnestestates.org>
Last year, I had the pleasure of flying in a 601XL with a 2 piece canopy that
was for sale. A year later, I would have to assume that it was sold. You may
be able to track down the current owner provided the tail number did not change.
I liked the safety factor of a fixed wind screen, should the canopy depart.
It also made for easy entry and exit. The craftsmanship was very good and the
design was cleverly done.
I chose not to buy it, in part, because of what appeared to be the additional
weight added by the canopy and what I perceived to be a need to add additional
stiffening to the frame, thus adding more weight. I took some pictures with
my cell phone camera and I have posted them on my community website. They are
not very good but it will give you a feel for how one fellow did it. The link
is:
http://www.eaglesnestestates.org/601xl-jm/
The current plan is to build a 601XL fast build some time next year when the
hangar is plumbed and wired completely.

Rick:
I have been planning this same idea for some time now. When I get my engine
installed and running I plan to incorporate a combination forward tilt /
sliding canopy. Stay tuned to www.cooknwithgas.com for details.

Could you build in a rollover protection bar immediately behind and above
the passengers' heads that the canopy would rest on when closed? It should
only be a weight issue since it would be very near the CG. If strong enough
to work as a roll bar, it would also be a convenient site to anchor the
harnesses and provide a handhold for entry and exit.
