Hello listers:
Larry McFarland mentions that his wife couldn't stand the pressure of a headset
on top of her head. My old David Clark gave me the same problem, feeling like
a nail pounded into the top of my skull after an hour or so. I replaced the
headset pad with a sheepskin pad I found at a pilot supply store and haven't
had a moment's pain since. For $20 or so it's sure worth a try. Another helpful
tip: Find a baseball cap without the button on top. The official AOPA hat
is made that way.

No. There are two colors so that in places where two coats of primer
are specified (on Boeing Aircraft - in my experience) you can easily
tell that two were applied. The green goes down first, then the yellow.

It's not to hard to remove that button from the top of a baseball cap. That
does remove much of the discomfort from wearing a headset.

Steve,
I did my inspection plates using the fly-cutter, but cut the holes in the
wings and fuselage using the fly-cutter by hand to avoid any damage to
the skins.
The disks were spun on a lathe to remove .010 at the edge to permit
self-centering and to hold position.
The spiders have no more than a rivnut at the center. The .032 disks are
counterbored for recess head 8-32
screws. The inspection disks forward of the spar have a j-nut tinnerman
at the forward edge to prevent any
possibility of the wind catching an edge because of slight curve in the
skin.

Brad,
You need access to remove the finger screen for cleaning and to be able
to remove the fuel tube connection.
This will be an annual inspection item if you never access the inside of
your tank again.
I've no other tank access holes than the one my float/sender occupies.

Lance, I have not timed the flap motor run. Just have not thought of it. As
to the location of the flap switch. I have dual controls and dual throttles and
I mounted the flap switch on the console. So in landing I would have to take
my left hand from the throttle to the stick, right hand from the stick to the
switch and reverse the steps to get my left hand back to the throttle. Made
one landing like that and then added a second flap switch up on the panel so
that I don't have to remove my palm from the throttle ball to finger tickle the

of those fancy sexy new headsets that are just ear piece inserts and thin
mouth phone. Real light and works well EXCEPT if you are an older fellow and
growing a whole bunch of new ear hair where none had been before. Then wearing
the
ear piece will drive you absolutely mad, so before you spend the big $ for
the high speed, low drag headset make sure your ears can take the tickle, FWIW,

IF you want to test this, go to Home Depot or similar and get the "squishy"
ear plugs (not the disposable ones), follow the directions exactly, and
where them around the house for a few hours. The ear plugs on most of these
in-the-ear headsets made of/with exactly the same "stuff"

Larry - I won't repeat the significant details mentioned by other
listers. Suffice it to say the Skyshop product is vastly superior - I
disassembled my Zenith installation and replaced it with the Skyshop
version after taking a flight in a Skyshop 701 (100mph cruise for

Steve, there is no such thing as a dopey question in aviation. :)
I'm assuming you're talking about the zinc rust inhibitors.
These are not very good primers for paint despite what
the ads tell you. The green stuff is zinc chromate, the
yellow stuff is zinc oxide. Zinc is what does the work
of delaying corrosion of Al. The chromate is considered
much more harmful to your lungs, although I don't know
how that conclusion was arrived at. So you should be
using the oxide. Some of us like to brush it on instead of
using the aerosol to avoid breathing in the overspray.
Mechanically there doesn't seem to be any difference,
both can be scratched off with a fingernail.
For actual priming before painting you should remove all
traces of zinc from the painted surfaces and follow the
preparation procedure for your paint of choice. I like the
DuPont self-etching primer for its user-friendliness.
You can get it at any auto paint store.

I am a plans-builder, and have compiled an .xls spreadsheet that details the
most complete list of materials for a 701 that time would permit. Source
material included the packing list recently posted on CH701.com, and a page
by page review of my V5 Revs plans. My idea was to put together a list
suitable for sorting that was close to actual quantities of material
required to purchase for construction. I will not say it is 100% perfect,
but it is closer to reality than anything I've seen posted.
I am not affiliated with Zenith, and they have not reviewed (to my
knowledge) or approved these files in anyway. I do however, want to make
them available to the plans-builder community, and feel they will be a
strong asset to any serious builder. I have an Excel 2000 version (626 KB)
and an Excel 5-95-97 version (1327 KB) available. Contact me off-line for
either one.

I have to agree with Bill for another reason. Ear plugs do a fair job for
hearing protection but don't do a lot for the low freq noise. A head set
covers and protects the area behind your ear where a lot of the low freq
noise is transmitted. Take it from a guy who has trouble with my hearing
each year at my Air Force Physical. Protect yourself.

Steve:
I've put several homebrew inspection/access panels on my 701 wings and they've
turned out pretty good. I can send photos and more dimensions off line if you
want. I went with 60mm dia. holes under each fuel tank outlet with top-mounted
covers, 70mm dia holes on top of each VDO fuel sending unit with flush-mounted
covers, and 90 mm holes with top-mount covers near each front upper strut fitting.
Paranoid about those three attach bolts I guess, probably for no good reason.
Also 110mm flush-mounted access holes on each wingtip. Just large enough
to get the strobe power supply out. All have .025 or .032 doublers and use nutplates
with countersunk rivet holes so the covers sit down nice and flat.
If you decide to put them in, make them in batches vice one at a time. Saves a
lot of layout and drilling time, and your covers will all be interchangeable when
you get done.
Some people bust on Zenith for not having CNC holes and stuff like access/inspection
plates in their kits, but I'm fine with it. I get a lot more pride out of
having to do some actual craftsmanship than if it were nothing but cleco-drill-prep-prime-rivet
the whole way through.

I have my kit unloaded and temporarily stored in the corner of my 2 =BD car
garage (now converted to a year-round workshop). I=92m now trying to figure
out where I=92m going to put everything once I start inventorying it, (I need
to get my work table built first before I inventory, because I will be
storing longer items on a shelf under the table).
A few questions regarding inventorying and storing:
* I assume you need to unwrap things to check part numbers against
your inventory list. Is it best to re-wrap before storing to provide added
protection (especially the sheet aluminum)?
* There are two rolls of flat aluminum sheet, approx. 3=92 to 3=92 3=94
wide. They are not marked on the outside wrapping, like many of the other
items. Any idea what these are, and can they be stored this way or do I
need to unroll them?
* Does anyone have a good technique for safely hanging smaller
completed components, such as the rudder, on a pegboard wall? I have some
space where I could hang my rudder, and eventually the rest of the tail
feathers, but I don=92t know a safe way to do this

I had land shorter vortex generators on N601RT for ~45 hours this year and was
not thrilled with them.
The VG's did lower the stall speed a few kts (sorry I don't have an exact improvement),
they did not significantly alter the top speed, they did allow very steep
climbs.
The VG's reduced my cruise efficiency. That is it took noticeably more power to
go the same speed. They also reduced the climb rate and reduced the max ceiling
of N601RT. This was disturbing when flying at 10,000 to cross the Rockies.
Bruce N269BB (Subaru powered CH601HD) and I flew from Colorado to OSH together
in 2003 and in 2005. In 2003 (no VG's on N601RT), my rate of climb matched or
bettered Bruce's. In 2005 (with VG's on N601RT), Bruce easily out climbed N601RT.
This is not purely scientific. Bruce's wife was with him in 2003, both planes
have more hours, etc. It is worth noting, in 2003 Bruce's wife rode in N601RT
and my O2 bottle rode with Bruce, N601RT still matched or bettered the climb
performance of N269BB.
At OSH 05 Chris said that the 601 wings are too fat to benefit from VG's.
I did discuss VG's with a Rans S-10 owner who was very happy with the VG's on his
plane. He said that it took quite a bit of experimentation to find the best
placement for them. Maybe my measurement of 10% chord was incorrect or not the
right placement.
Regarding cleaning the plane with VG's. I agree with Bill that cleaning the wing
is more difficult with the VG's in place. The bugs may not be where the VG's
are, but my plane still needs to be cleaned of dust, and other crud that accumulates
over time.
YMMV. Land Shorter says they have a money back guarantee. I have not tried to return
my VG's.
