I had slow leaks in two of the tube type tires on my 601. I ended up
removing the shraeder valves, applying some silicone grease to them and
reinstalling them. No more leaks.

When I started my project I had a 4 or 5 pairs of snips from various
makers but scratch building with them would not have been possible if
cutting by hand. I bought a pair of Irwin offsets for right hand (since
I'm righthanded) and I've gone through 20 sheets 4X12 so far and they
work perfectly.

I have one that appears to be losing air. I have three tubes, just haven't
put them it yet. I will install them before I start flying. Most tire
dealers can order the tubes for you, mine were $18 each, Aircraft Spruce
also has them for $19.
The only downsides to putting tubes in is weight, and cost. The tire
manufacturer doesn't write "tube type" on the tires because they intend you
to run them tubeless. If you have a problem with a tire while running a
clearly marked "tube type" tire "tubeless" then the tire manufacturer is
also clearly not responsible for the tire or any resulting consequences.

I don't think you should try to go without tubes. I used 3.50-8:00 S83
tires and tubes
from motorscooter wheels. They fit the ZAC Matco wheels well. The Tubes
would
probably fit the ZAC tires, but be sure you get a 90-degree bent valve
stem for ease of
access to refill.

I love to see pics of all these Zenith's being born. I miss the construction
phase, maybe I need to build something again. A set of HDS outer wing panels
might be enough to satisfy the urge for a while...

I have tube-type supplied tires that I use tube-less. Same ones
supplied by Zenith. They are a golf cart tire by Carlisle (Turf Glide).
The air probably leaks from the o-ring in the split rim. One tire
leaks slightly, and two do not. I just add a couple of pounds of air
every couple of weeks. Just not a big problem for me. Tubes just add
unnecessary weight and you might not be any better off.

I should not have said for right hand since right or left hand has
nothing to do with it. The one I use is the red one which cuts straight
and left. The bottom blade follows the cut edge on the right side and
guides the snips in a straight line. Your hand is above the material
and therefore doesn't get scratched by the edges.

I solved the problem of tires bleeding off air pressure with a small amount of
low pressure tubeless ATV Slime. It works well for me. I keep 12 lbs. of air
pressure in my 701 tires and I will lose a pound or two every thirty days or
so.

I think I'm making good progress on forming my wing ribs for my 601XL
project, but the next step that is fairly daunting to me, at least from a
scratch builders' point of view, is the construction of the wing spars and
aft wing channels. The top and bottom spar caps are over 9 foot long and the
aft wing channels (6W7-1) are 12 foot long. Even if I do locate an 8 foot
brake, I'm out of luck fabricating these myself.
After searching the list archive I see some folks have used two pieces for
the caps but it's unclear where the butt joint should be located and will
this approach pass muster with the DAR exam? Can L-angle be used for the top
spar cap on the 601XL or is the added weight a problem. I have also seen a
posting (http://ch601.org/resources/rear%20spar/601xl_rear_spar_splice.htm)
on the ch601.org <http://ch601.org> site about splicing the rear spar
channel. Has anyone succefully used this approach? Or .. should I just buy
these parts from ZAC? Sorry if I am revisiting old topics of discussion but
most of what I found in the archives related to HD or HDS wings.
Looking for any wisdom and guidance on these topics. Thanks in advance for
help!

I built both of my wings using the rear channel splice method. I think it is stronger
because you have extra thickness where the hole is drilled for the aileron
control rod. I used my Larry McFarland Design, 8' brake for the rear channel
parts. For the spars you need to find a long brake. Check your local fab
shops and you may find someone willing to help you out. Here's a photo taken
back in November of '03.

I think the arguement against bothering with tubes has been centered on too much
bother and too much weight. I have tubes in all three tires on my dinky little
UL so if it isn't too much bother and weight there...... why not on a 601 or
701?

I'm building my spar in the moment getting everything with solid rivet,
For the spar cap doubler I did cut it in 2 and add a doubler of .040" of a
length enough to catch 6 rivets on the spar and 6 rivets at the skin I did
this as per ac43.13b.
I did try making a one piece cap by bending it with a hammer over my table
but with no success part had a curve in it.

When we assembled our tires, we put some black rubber tire in the "O" ring of
the rim, just in case it could loose air. They dont loose any air in almost
a year,
You can add the rubber easy, just lift one wheel at a time and deflate it, move
it to the center and paint the O ring area with black tire rubber, then inflate
the tire as normal when installing it.

Hi, to the point of installing fuel tanks that came with my kit (10 gal per
wing). Seems like 20 gallons is not capacity and if I am going to change
them, now would be the time. Can anyone that is currently flying with 20
gallons of fuel give me their opinion.

I think I know the answer to this, but is it possible to get a couple
folding bikes into a CH-601? The folded dimensions are 11" x 22" x 33"
and they weigh 23 lbs each.

I think that "Blowing" an inner tube in a landing is more dangerous that having
a "flat" in a tubeless... (remember old tires in the road).
Never had either in my airplanes, The few flats were there always when I got to
the hangar to fly in the morning :-(
In a hard landing, the tuble can blow, same final result...

Perfect here, is more range that "MY" tank :-) About 4 hrs at 5,000 rpm (Rotax
912S)
Until today, never needed to fly more than 3 hrs without landing, even in long
XCountry flights to FlyInns....

My ZAC supplied 10 gallon tanks are really about 10.3 gallons. 20 gallons
is more than enough for me. Right now I am flying with the left tank empty
while getting ready to pull and paint the wings. I burn less than 4 gal per
hour and never land on a tank with less than 3 gallons.

I don't think that the issue is blowing the tire due to a hard
landing. It is breaking the bead due to a side load caused by not
tracking straight at touchdown. (cross wind with not the proper
forward slip at touchdown). With a tubeless tire the tire can be
pushed sideways enough to cause to bead of the tire to separate from
the wheel. These tires are only inflated to 10 lbs, so I don't think
it would take too much side force to push the tire off of the bead.

Rims that are made for tubeless tires have a safety bead, a small ridge
located close to the outside edge of the rim. Matco may have changed their
rims since mine were made, but I have no such bead on mine. Without the
bead a fully inflated tire can pop off the rim if side loaded. When it does
all the air is gone in an instant. I run the tubes.
