      Dave,
Thank you for the information. I believe it will help as I progress with the

Kevin, I have a 601XL with Jab 3300 and dual controls I finished building
this summer with about 13 hours flying on it located at hanger at Thomaston (OPN)

Georgia. If you are interested in seeing it, seeing and hearing it fly you
are welcome. If the weather clears this weekend I plan on flying both Sat & Sun.

Fact is, if you are a Republican and a non-smoker you could stay with us when
you come. Not sure about the distance from Charleston to Thomaston ? Call me
on cell at 478-731-9678, Best regards, Bill

      Hi Bill,

My name is Ed Moody II (yeah a lot of the family that didn't move to Louisiana
stayed back in Georgia). I'm in Rayne, Louisiana (near Lafayette) and I will
be visiting the Factory in Missiouri December 8th and 9th to finalize the
decision on kit building a 601XL with the Jabiru 3300.

Where in GA is Thomaston? Do you ever plan to fly west? If so, stop off at
LeGros Memorial Airport (3R2) near Crowley, LA and I will be happy to take you
in, if you too are a non-smoking Republican. Might even trade you a good supper
      for a ride.

      Ed

Ed, sure I plan to fly all over the place once I complete these pesky 40 hour
Phase I requirements. You wouldn't think after waiting and building three
years that flying off the time would be an effort, but it seems to be. Maybe
before Christmas if weather and work cooperate. A very good friend of mine, CPT

Ray Moody of Macon, died early this year, any kin ? As to Thomaston airport it

is located about center state, maybe a little on the western side. Best to
you, and maybe I can make that fly for grub trade sometime, Bill of Georgia

      Come on over Bill,

You are welcome anytime. Give me a call or email when you anticipate the trip.
We don't travel extensively but we do what we can when we can. I still practice
dentistry full time with my son so I'm not a globe trotter yet.

Captian Moody was probably a distant relative but I'm darned if I could tell you
how. I never made his aquaintance but we generally all come from the same Irish
imigrant ancestors who moved down from the Carolinas. Seven generations back,
my great grandfather's great grandfather, Isaac Moody lived in Appling Co.
Georgia from 1774 - 1858. His wife, Sarah was our connection to George Carter,
one of Jimmy Carter's ancestors (not very proud of that but it wasn't my fault...
I'm a bigger fan of Zell Miller).

Ironically, I was also a captain (in the USAF) 1977 - 1980 but obviously did not
stay on as a career officer.

Hope to meet you soon. You can email me directly: dredmoody@cox.net or call 337-334-2967

Read my posting again. Better yet, break down, open the Construction
Manual, turn to page 8, look at the pictures and read the note "The HEAD of
the rivet will be marked by the dolly".
I consider the matter over, and am going downstairs to do something
      "Constructive" with my time.....

      I agree with Mark.

I built one. Highly recommend it. I built my 701 spars and cabin sides
      with it.

It needs a couple of simple modifications to build 701 spars to clear the
alum angles which are different than the 601 spars.

build one or buy one. I feared spars. The dimpler makes building them a
simple strait forward 40 hr job. :-)

| Subject: | Converting to thicker gear strut plates |

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com>

      Frank,

After a little research, I found the drawings show the gear struts were
      made from

      2-diameter .058 or .065-wall 4130 tubing. Aircraft Spruce also sells a
      1.875-diameter, .250-wall, 4130- tube.

This requires determination of which thickness was used for the struts.

With the thicker .065-wall, something like .0055 would have to be
removed on the diameter for it to fit properly within the tube.

For the .058-wall, there would be .009-clearance between the
1.875-diameter tube and the strut inside-diameter, so it might have to
be welded several places and filed to create a proper inside-fit.

Using 3 segments of the strut tube, 4 segments of the sleeve tube and
3.5 square sections of the thicker plate adds about 3 lbs additional
      weight to the plane.

      P/n 03-10800 2-Dia x .065 wall 4130 tube at $5.82 per foot 2 ft

      P/n 03-10600 1-7/8-Dia x .250 wall 4130 at $2.10 per foot 2 ft

      P/n 03-25660 .190 thick 9 x 9 4130 plate at $23.95 per piece 1 pc

Total cost for material for changing gear plate thickness, $40. plus
      shipping.
