Harbor freight now sells a pair of hand shears that
are a knock off of the smaller Malco shears. They are
$12.99 including a extra set of blades. They seem to
be of excellent quality.

The angles are L's of which you will use a lot of. They are the 4' lengths
that come with the kit. You cut off the length that is required. If the angle is
specified, look for the part. There are some heavier thickness material
included in the kit. If there is no listing or just calls for "L" then it's the
standard angle that are in lengths. Look at the detail on the bottom left of 7-G-2

I've seen several messages and replies that address substituting one to several
A5 rivets instead of A4s. Most involve overdrilled holes, etc.
My question is, can you substitute ALL A5 rivets for the A4s?

You could but it would be pretty ugly and make a little more drag. You
need to be careful of edge distances too...I.e too close to an edge with
an A5 could give you a weaker joint than if you stuck with the A4.

Dear List:
Has anyone installed carb heat sensors for the 912S engine? Where do they go?
Is there a tapped hole for them or do I make it? Or should I not bother
because it is not necessary?
Thanks for your reply

Dave-
Fly ins around here will do you no good if you're looking for Zodiacs- I
didn't see my first Zenith up close and personal until a couple of months
ago, and it came from hundreds of miles away! Unless things have changed,
I'm the only one I know of in about 100 mile radius building a Zenith.
I totally agree with you on the instructional materials- nothing jives.

All-
This is why my main advice to a new or prospective kit builder is to
disregard a "Quick build" and forget about a budget. They're both arbitrary
constraints guaranteed to help you screw up if you worry about keeping to
them.
In the beginning, you figure, "If I work 40 hours a week on the project,
I'll be able to finish it in X months". If you don't put your 40 hours in,
you feel guilty, and, until you've been burned enough times to realize it,
sometimes you have to put 39 hours in figuring out the instructions,
researching, ordering and waiting for the right tool, learning how to use
the tool on SCRAP instead of the plane, etc., etc. to actually make 1 hour's
progress. Agreed?
From a money aspect, "I'll blow the budget buying a batch of $50 tools
I'll only use once. The ad said I could build this kit using only a hammer
and cold chisel, and by God, I will!"
Thanks to genetics, I didn't have the last problem. I'm directly related
to either Tim the Tool Man Taylor or Al Borland. (Realistically, Red
Green!!)

I'll be using the Odyessy from Aircraft Spruce Part #11-02233 ODYSSEY
DRY CELL PC-680
This one also seams to be a favorite with the RV guys.

Yup it is...Very low internal resistance and I'll be using one on my RV.
To be honest though its more than you need for a Zodiac...You can get a
17AH batt from www.batteries.com that works perfectly well for these
smaller engines and is also dirt cheap..Like $25 or so...
Then again the Odyssey is not THAT much money ($80) but if it were me
I'd save the money.

Samm,
You don't want to do that because all A5s will not improve either the
strength or the appearance of your airplane.
There is no economy in doing it either. The A4s compliment the material
thickness on all your surfaces. You'll notice
that A5s, as grouped at the junction of the upper forward and rear
longerons will have a slightly bumpy appearance that
you'd not want to see repeated on your ribs and other relatively
"smooth" surfaces.

Bob,
I'd bet that it could be an 18-amp hour sealed lead acid battery from
Batteries Plus. I start my Stratus Subaru easily with one even though
I have an extra one installed for ignition backup.

Thanks for the info on the prices on the 601XL
People on the list start shit about anything
All I was trying to do was ask, "what do I have to spend"
The guys in my EAA chapter would laugh out loud if I came up in a Ultralight
The biggest thing is the avionics and instruments, I just don't know what I
will need
I think I will start with the bare basics and add them as I need them

nuts, bolts, cables, wire, primer and rivets to finish the tail, wings and
