Bruce,
I have the 70" Warp drive on my 701 using the Rotax 912S and I also tried the 68".
The 70" gives me a little stronger climbout, but the 68" worked satisfactorily
as well. I could find no appreciable difference in the cruise. Both provided
a solid 95 mph cruise at 5,000 RPM. I have the 68" for sale if you are
interested, it has 10 hours on it and is like new. You can contact me off list.
I am getting ready to do my first annual at 190 hours.

FIRST - I have nothing but the highest respect for the father of these
wonderful planes.
SECOND - There are well over a thousand of these aircraft happily flying
around the world.
THIRD - Build to plans and use the manual and you will have a fine
aircraft.
FOURTH - The following is for experimental/design type people with open
minds.
A handful of builders are involved in a light debate on changing the top
skin of the wing tips.
Currently (and I think this goes for the 601 as well), the top skin on
the wing tip is cut inboard towards the trailing edge to make a constant
45 degree Hoerner wing tip. This design has worked for thousands of
airplanes - 170's and other production aircraft.
A number of newer aircraft (American Champion Explorer for one) and a
number of modifications (New tips Cubbies) are using a squared top skin
cut. This produces a changing Hoerner cut from 45 degrees at the spar
to about 60-80 degrees at the rear spar to flat at the trailing edge.
I made a 701 wing model, got some smoke, and disconnected my
welding/painting exhaust fan to very crudely test what is happening to
the airflow around each example.
PICTURES can be found at www.mts.net/~embima on the Airframe page.
What the video shows (and what the pictures show) is that the airflow
likes to stick to surfaces. The first few pictures show the variable
cut (modified Hoerner tip) and the airflow going straight back and
following the top skin. In the case of the original design wing
(constant 45 degree Hoerner) the air flow follows the top skin inward.
My initial take on this is that if the wing forces the air to change
direction and follow the top skin inward, there must be an equal and
opposite reaction and the air is pulling the wing outward - also equal
and opposite on both tips.
THE BIG QUESTION - Does this translate to a reduction in efficiency?
The latest wing tips trend toward a Hoerner tip at the spar and an
almost flat tip at the trailing edge.
PLEASE forward your questions/comments to stolvair@mts.net and I will
post the good ones on the page.
Thanks
Martin Bima

It looks like you are moving air over your model by drawing air into a suction
hose at the trailing edge. One problem with this method is that the hose will
draw air from all directions around the opening so the air flow into the hose
will not form parallel stream lines over the wing model. The air will be converging
towards the inlet of the hose as it approaches the wing. This will affect
the accuracy of your results.
If the air is being pushed outward near the leading edge of the wing, it seems
to me that it must move back inward somewhere else. It will either follow the
curve towards the trailing edge on the Horner or it will move back more abruptly
after it falls off the trailing edge of the modified tip.
The modified wing tip may or may not be slightly more efficient than the Horner
tip but it will be more complicated to build and with a plane like the 701, the
resulting gain is likely to be insignificant. Maybe the small gain is worth
the extra effort and maybe not.

It's neat to see the stuff about Apple Valley Airport. I used to fly
out of there, working on a commercial rating, when I was stationed at
George Air Force Base (now closed). I'm going to date myself, but Norm
Goyer (who now edits the Custom Planes magazine) was the airport
manager. I had some real interesting flying experiences from that
airport. I'll have to try to remember the fly-in next year, and see if
I can plan a vacation trip around that time.

They call Proseal "the black Death" here in RV building circles.
If you havent used it before make sure you scuff the aluminium good,
degrease with acetone, have plenty of gloves and popsicle sticks and be
prepared to work fairly swiftley as it will set up pretty quick.
As you can imagine just about everything gets covered and eventually my
gloves came off and it took weeks to get it off my hands.
Works good though!

FWIW, I've had aileron trim on the Zodie since built and would not be
without it. Passenger vs. no passenger, fuel load, cross winds etc. So
much easier to set trim and not have to lean on the stick.

Paul, you really need the aileron trim on the XL. The left side is a bit
heavier as I suppose intended to balance when you fly with a passenger. Course,
without the right side pax it will fly left wing heavy and if you want to fly
without roll pressure you need a trim. Also, as the tanks are used up the
balance is effected and the aileron trim makes flying easier. Do what you want,
but
I am really glad I installed it, Best Regards, Bill

Two of his friends are trying to sell the deceased fellow's Zenith Zodiac

Can you help me out by looking up a sale of the 3300 engine shipped to

don't need any personnal info that would violate anyone's privacy. I just
want to know if the engine has the carby econo tuning kit installed and any

Scott, I played hooky from work this morning and went flying a couple hours
and I certainly used both my trims to fly straight and level. Maybe on a
heavier plane or one that is just more docile than a XL you could get by without
aileron trim tab. Course, if you don't want to fly comfortably leave it off and

I think the stuff is structural, disassembled a couple tanks I had in the shop
for repairs and it would tear the alum before peeling off, tenacious stuff, you
won't leave fingerprints for weeks as it fills up the cracks, you have to wear
it off.. I heard that the patents ran out recently on the stuff and a couple
more folks are marketing it, at prices a LOT lower, can anyone confirm??

The stuff I got from Vam's said "fleameseal" on it or
somesuch...Definatly was not "Proseal"
Oh by the way if you buy the 6 OZ pack it comes as a big syringe that
you have to insert the plungere and stir.It was WAAY to think to do this
though so I tried using an vary speed battery drill and it ripped the
plunger off...Great start!
My advice....Either buy it in the can or squeeze the contents of the
tube out and mix it by hand which is what I ended up doing anyway.
It sure does seal up good I had no leaks after putting my flop tubes in.

Lance and other Thread Friends, on the brakes making a ton of noise I finally
spoke with a tech support fellow from Grove, named Robbie, nice guy. After
going over the particulars he concluded that the problem was most likely in the
master cylinders. Especially because the noise returned immediately after
letting up on the peddle pressure. He had two suggestions: First, see if the vent
holes at the top of the puck are open (or even there) as air is supposed to
come in above the fluid in the puck and without a vent hole of some type the
system will not relax. Second, check to see if the push rod from the master
cylinders travels all the way up as it is supposed to open a release valve that
will allow the calipers to remain near the disc so rattle is none existent or
minimal. Have not checked either solution yet, but will tomorrow and I will
report, best regards, Bill

I discussed this with Chris Heinz at Sun-N-Fun and he said "No Problem". I
used .025 angle on the underside of the flange, the hinge supplied by ZAC
goes between the skin and. the angle and I trimmed the skin back to the same
measurement as the hinge type. You will have another row of rivets on top,
the conversion takes an hour or two.
