      Your welcome but ...........:-)

It is Chris Boultinghouse web page and plane.

I just provided a link. Chris worked at the Zenith factory in Mexico MO
for awhile, and contributed to this list when he was building the 601. He
sold it and he left this portion of his web page up to help Zenith scratch
      builders.

Folks, a word of advice: the AS&S tool is of very poor quality. The rollers are
      plastic,
      apparently from shower doors.

I used the handle of one and attached actual roller bearings.
The tool works ok, but it takes a lot of dexterity to produce a nice flange.

I eventually borrowed steel dies, and pressed the ribs with four c-clamps. Tool
      a little while,
but worked beautifully. If you have a large enough vise, it would work as well.

I also tried Randy Twig's method. I even used a cordless drill to operate the jack.
      Fun, but
overkill. It does puzzle your neighbours...

      Cheers

      Hello list members.

I am happy to inform you all that the oil leak problem on my Rotax 912 engine has
been solved. Thanks to Jerry, JERICKSON03E@aol.com.
I have to apologize to the person who sold me the engine, for thinking that he
had sold me a damaged engine. There is nothing wrong with the engine now. It works
and smells great. (Deodorant spray test)
To tell you all what had caused the leak is very embarrassing, but here it is.
When I received the engine, the head nuts had been mixed up when it got assembled.
This was only done by the seller, so that I would have the engine in one piece.
It had to be torn down for the repair of the crankshaft.
The Collar cap nuts (part # 842-471)were on the outside and the hex nuts(part #842-610)
on the inside. This is how I thought it should go together again. Wrong.

After replacing all O rings, new Oil return tubes, many pressure tests on the oil
system, all that needed to be done was 30 min work of switching nuts. And who
      is the biggest nut? Me.
I have learned a lot about this engine while trying to find the solution, but without
the help of you list members, this guess work could have lasted me all
winter and maybe longer. Not to mention the cost of parts.

I would like to thank you all who posted your ideas about how to fix the oil leak,
and especially Jerry who approached the problem the professional way. The
spay test worked great to find the source and then this simple and yet effective
      way to solve it.

      Thank you,
      Embarrassed Johann G.
      Iceland.
Happy Zenith 701 flyer at last.

      Hey Carlos:
Doesn't sound like you used a hydraulic jack. Using a drill to crank
the jack up and then crank the jack down would be the hard way. With
hydraulics you crack the valve and gravity does the rest!

      Hi, Randy

You are correct, I just used the car's (cheap) jack. Still, I did little physical
      work, as the
cordless drill was turning the crank.

As I said, it did work, but for me it was easiest with the "C" clamps.

      Cheers

PS: Sorry for misspelling your family name - I intended to check the spelling before

| Subject: | RE: Rudder camera |

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Brandon Tucker <btucke73@yahoo.com>

      Mark,

I have not installed cameras in mine (yet), but
the following is what I have recently done at work.

           Background:

      http://barnstorming.com/aeropress/cgi_bin/xfer.cgi?page=prod_combat.php#top

The company wanted to put camera systems in the
aircraft for years, but never had the time. The
requirements for the system were a view facing the
customer in the back seat, and a forward view to catch
them shooting the opponent. I found these security
      cameras:

      http://www.electronicsoutfitter.com/store/SW-P-BCC.html

The resolution is not quite digital quality, but
good enough for what we need it for. I mounted one in
the cockpit facing back, and one in the wing facing
forward. They are both connected to an rca video
      splitter:

      http://www.sjgreatdeals.com/rcadt902av.html

This allows us to edit the video real time.
Whenever we are offensive, we switch to the forward
camera. -Defensive, rear facing camera. The output
of the video selector goes directly to a mini DVD
camcorder. After the flight, we finalize the disc,
and sell the DVD for $50. One limiting factor was the
shutter speed of DVD camcorders being non adjustable,
and creating significant prop flicker at cruise RPM.
If you use mini DV, or digital 8, you won't have this
      problem.

Installing the camera in the cockpit was easy
with two existing screws, but installing the camera in
the wing required FAA approval. Something we don't
have to worry about here. In the wing, I drilled a 1
1/8" hole in the leading edge of the outer wing
attachment access skin, and placed a large grommet in
the hole. I put the camera in the grommet, and used
the base of the mount to rivet it to a partial skin
inside. This made a secure, although crude,
installation, and was approved by the FAA. I think
installing this camera on top of the rudder would be a
simple task. Just remove the mount off the bottom,
and use the threads in the camera to bolt it on.

Both the camcorder and the bullet cams work on 9
volts, so I tapped into aircraft power using a
cigarette lighter adapter (with appropriate fuse), and
spliced the power out of the camcorder DC power
converter to power the minicams. This way everything
is powered by the aircraft. I had to get FAA approval
for the lighter adapter as well, but you don't have to
worry about that either (obviously). I have been
working on this system and FAA permissions since
March, and am just getting the system going...

I have installation pics I can e-mail anyone who
is interested. I could even edit some video and send
it along if anyone is interested. It is about as
simple and inexpensive as it gets.

      R/

      Brandon

Mark, I have no experience with the subject, but sometime ago I collected a few
      bookmarks that may
      be of interest.

I thought it would be a good idea to record instrument panel images to gather data
      during flight,
so I did some searches on cameras and flight.
What I found is based on flying R/C models, so the cameras are very small.

      Hi Mark
I've used both a video and 35mm on the left strut assembly to take oblique
and vertical for map mosaic with some success. A large camera will at times
cause slight airflow disturbances over the flapperon, but nothing that can
      easily countered.
I've also used a colour security camera from Canadian Tire Corp that plugs
in to 12 volts and my video camera recorder to capture the video with good
results to study the airflow around different parts of the airplane. The
camera is relatively small (2"x2")but the quality of the images is
comparable to VGA so definitely not up to the best available today.
I've considered putting a camera on the rudder but have not done so for fear
of flutter and airload on the critical top hinge of the 701 design. I would
definitely talk to Chris H before test flying such a mod.

      Hi Bruce
Have a 68" warp. I'm happy but have not tried anything else. The warp has
given me good service for 400 hrs, mostly on floats. I've used 8.5 degrees
to 11 degrees depending on where I want best performance. I had to add 4" to
the nose strut when on wheels to get 9" ground clearance.

      Hi Jim,
Added aileron trim eight year ago and use it all the time to counter
passenger and wing fuel load changes. The 3" x 6" tab is mounted at the
outboard edge of the left flapperon. The wiring comes out of the trailing
edge of the wing tip and into the flapperon glass tip. No need for an
indicator as you can clearly see the tab from the pilots seat. I recommend a
hat switch on the c.c. for ease of operation.

Hi Guys, I'm running wires and final closing structures in my 601XL and
I want to install a remote camera on the top of my rudder for taping in
flight video's. I remember some discussion before on this, but would
like an update on the idea. Anyone done this and if so hints and tricks
please and some camera suggestions would be nice.
