On behalf of the builder, I'm pleased to announce the
maiden flight of N3577H, a scratch-build HD created by Mr.
Ray Huffman of Kansas City.
After most of a decade of building, Ray got the
airworthiness certificate this fall, and has been making
finishing touches since then. This morning's first flight
was made by an experienced test pilot, under
less-than-ideal conditions, at Gardner, KS. Winds were
15-20, but straight down the runway.. After a couple fast
taxi/hops, he lifted off, circled the pattern, and landed.
Another take-off took him farther out to do some steep
turns, slow flight with power-on near-stall, and back for
landing.
Plane is a plans-built HD, empty weight of 743, Subaru
EA-81, Dave Johnson reduction gear (belt), Warp 68" 3-blade
prop set at 14 deg. (IIRC)
Performance sounded typical HD -- sensitive controls,
slightly heavy left wing, easy climb at 700 fpm, speed of
100 indicated at almost-full throttle.
On this day after Veterans Day, there is no-one more
deserving of this honor than Ray. He is experienced naval
aviator, with numerous combat missions in WW-II, flying
Corsairs and Hellcats, including carrier operations.
Working with early plans, he has persisted in building his
plane, while continuing to work a part time job. He's
looking to get some more time-in-type before taking the
controls, but shouldn't have any trouble with his
experience.
Ray is not on the internet, but he is a first-class
gentleman, and deserves credit for achieving this goal. He
has my congratulations.

Rico,
Please extend a hearty congratulations to Ray on this achievement. I
hope he
finds the aircraft as much fun to fly as it was to build. If it's
possible, perhaps
the rest of the aircraft data could be transmitted thru you for him.
Would be interested
in the specifics of his engine installation, paint, airspeed, rpms etc.
Way to go Ray!

Fellow 601 builders,
How large did you make the hole for the prop hub? Right now I'm looking at
3" but I'm not really sure it's big enough or too big.
Thanks for any help you may provide!!

Is anyone out there installing the new bottom fuselage access door? This
will require the first install of rivnuts that I have had to do. Anyone have
a good suggestion for the 3/32 rivets? They will have to be countersunk. How
should I do this? Dimple or the microstop, countersink method? Any
suggestions?

Great that Ray is flying.
During the past few hours I deleted all of my saved and starred email. If
you have emailed me about possible purchase of my airplane and or are
waiting some other reply, please respond to this email so that I can get
things started again.
The joys of surviving a stroke are amazing - Ha! But I am relearning and
coming along reasonable well. Worked on my tractor today. seems being seat
belted in helps keep me focused. I lose interest in what I am doing after 5
minutes or so. Computer, store books, reading, working in yard, etc. So, I
keep going from one to another after forcing myself to stick with any one
thing for at least five minutes. Did so with this email. Seems to be
helping.

Kevin, I just finished up the access door. I used solid rivets and nut
plates with a dimple set. It worked well. Take a look at my web site.

Sorry all
Don't know where my brain is. I meant to say nutplates, not rivnuts. Guess
I'm going nuts! (pun intended). As I said they need 3/32 countersunk rivets.
Don't know the best way to do this.

I started to use 3/32 pop rivets on the nut plates after fighting those tiny squeeze
rivets. Much easier and since it is just holding the plate it is not a
structural issue. jack in Los Osos, Ca ( Plane at Fresno)

Mark, there is no correct answer and it may grow in size and shape. Take
some gray primer and spray the hub, insure the inside lips of the half hole in
the cowl shell are also painted, put cowls back of and start her up. Rev the
engine, shut down and inspect if no paint is rubbed your fine. Maybe fine, cause
under full power the engine really swings in the mounts and may rub. If you
find a place, note where the paint is rubbed off on the hole in the cowl and
drimmel out a bit more. Took me three times to get it right and you don't want
it
too much larger then necessary, Best of luck, Bill 601XL-3300w/DC

Plans Builders,
I was so excited to be starting the second rib form I got a little ahead of myself
and didn't double check my measurements before cutting.
The process I used: layout grid, layout points on grid, check points dimensions
(didn't do that on rib 2), connect points (the cut line), two way tape second
board to first board, saw them out as one, grind to line, drill mfg holes (lighting
hole centers), radius edges, separate forms, grind 10 degree back draft
on each board (making R & L parts).
I had made rib 1 and 2 on the same day and didn't catch it till I was getting ready
to cut #3. I was going to back draft all three ribs tonight and noticed
#2's trailing edge was smaller 10mm than #1. I'm pretty sure the flap is the
symmetrical and this didn't make sense.
Well I was able to save it and make it a rib 5. Now I have rib 1, 3, & 5 ready
to make parts.
Lesson: Measure Twice, Cut Once.
