Dear Listers,
Well, its November 30th and that means three things...
1) Today I am officially 42 years old (sympathy is appreciated)!
2) It marks that last "official" day of the List Fund Raiser!
3) Its the last day I will be bugging everyone for a whole year! :-)
If you use the Lists and enjoy the content and the no-advertising,
no-spam, and no-censorship way in which they're run, please make a
Contribution today to support their continued operation and
upkeep. Your $20 or $30 goes a long way to further the List
operation and keep the bills paid.
A Lister wrote a funny message in the comments field of his
Contribution that I thought summed things up pretty well:
"Worth every penny and I'm a tightwad!"
Thank you to everyone that has made a Contribution so far this
year! It is greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for a 701 for a while, and one of those I looked at had a
VW motor with a geared prop. I researched the subject a bit and on a couple
of web sites it cautioned aginst the use of direct drive VW's on draggy
planes. Without trying to recall the information exactly (and getting it
wrong) direct drive, hi rotation props are not suited to the 701 as well as
larger low speed props. So the problem is not nescessarily the motor, but
the prop.

Gene Smith at www.culverprops.com and Valley Engineering has a reduction
belt drive that has been very successfull on slow and draggy airplanes,
especially if you have ground clearance for a large prop. www.gpasc.com
also sells his redrive on their VW conversion. I've got one about ready to
go on a Kitfox with an 84 inch prop. Bob U.

My 601XL that I completed in June has a Jab 3300A driving a Sensenich
W64ZX51 prop. It has an empty weight of 799 lbs, with 6x600 wheels/tires (no
fairings) vice the standard 5x500s, dual sticks/brakes, aux tanks, lights,
wing lockers and a bunch of other stuff that adds up the weight. It easily
flys at a GPS two way averaged measured 120 mph at about 2650 rpm on about
4.8 gpm. The max V with full throttle is about 135 mph - not worth the
added fuel usage. It trims out with little or no elevator trim tab,
although it could sure use some more elevator UP trim for landing with flaps
(The full trim tab on recent kits probably corrects this). Aileron trim
depends on spanwise weight distribution, but no gross trim has been
required.
You might check your UP flap setting. I find that just a few degrees of
flap can easily give up 5 kts top speed.

Dear List,
I recently completed my Zenith Zodiac CH601XL powered by the Jabiru 3300.
So far
I have flown about 22 hours of the 40 that the FAA and my DAR require, the
airplane has been performing wonderfully, she trims up just fine (electric
elevator
and aileron trim installed) she weighed in at 790 lbs. empty /without
fuel/no
long range tanks installed, with that in mind I have a few performance
questions:
With the landing gear fairings I am seeing speeds at 2400 RPM of about a 100
MPH.
If I push the engine to 2750 RPM I get about 108 MPH GPS. My question
aren't
these cruise speeds quite a bit below the 132MPH that Zenith claims?
I have been experimenting with the trim and when I put he aircraft with
"heavy"
forward trim and I hold the yoke back with a fair amount of effort it seems
like
I can eke out a few more miles per hour out the the aircraft, however, this
configuration leads to one sore arm and shoulder. Could my Horizontal
stabilizer
use some tweaking? Wings?
Other than that the plane has been very enjoyable to fly, stalls are benign
at
best. I feel real good about flying my XL and the view is great! I think
Zenith
delivered inj terms of the kit, however, I want a little more speed so I can
beat my Cessna 150 friends.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Jeff Paris

Jeff,
What RPM can you get at full throttle? I can usually get at least 3000,
sometimes 3100rpm. At that point my ground speeds are usually 115-120
Knots. My ASI is reading high, but I can easliy get over 120kts
indicated at full throttle.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: michael burkhardt <mjbavid@yahoo.com>
I was looking for a used 912, found one in the
southeast. Looked like a good deal, low time. Engine
was a 91 or 92 model. The engine logbook did not show
any of the service bulletins had been completed or a
overhaul after 10 years. Called Lockwood Aviation in
Florida talked with there tech Cary {not sure of
spelling}. Cary told me after the rocker arms, oil
pump, and the stator bulleitns would be $3500.00 just
for parts, not including the overhaul. Also required
work on the gearbox to upgrade the tbo from 600hrs to
1000hrs. I called our west coast Rotax rep would not
even talk to me, just wanted to sell me a new engine.
Cary at Lockwood took the time to help with my
questions. Saved me from being stuck with a headache
and a money pit. I would have spent more than the
purchase price of a new engine. To statisfy the
service bulletins and the overhaul. I recommend the
people at Lockwood Aviation very highly! A 701
builder, still looking for a engine!

To all with Jabiru firewall fwd packages. I'm totally perplexed with the oil
access door. Jabiru USA provided a hinge and a piece of metal but every
configuration I've tried the door binds against the cowl. Did you have to
trim the opening at the hinge point? I don't want to just go cutting away
material. Any direction and especially pictures would be a great help.

Hello Jeff and all,
We already have a 701 (just sold one:-) and we are building a 601 XL kit to
have a longer distance cruiser, not specialy a fast one.
This is my point: I knew that the ZAC airplanes were not the fastest airplanes
of the block :-)
What we like of Mr Heintz designs are their flying AND specialy the Landing
charateristcs. Also how well they are built and their landing gear specialy
designed to handle grass and dirt strips, when no asfalt strip is available.
If we would want a fast airplane, probably a Canard (Velocity type) would had
be our choise, BUT Dad (a high time bush pilot) direct us to look for a gentle,
slow and safe landing type of airplane for "low hours a year" week end
pilots like us...
We fly to enjoy (the view and the landing) not to suffer.
Yes, Clean and trim your airplane (up there during the winter months) the best
you can, We all like to do that, but once is ready, just enjoy it during
the flying months.
One more point: Keep it as light as possible, this sure makes a great diference
in speed and range, (remember a full car with all the family and top cargo
pod, in vacation trips? Cant go fast.)
5 to 8 mph in a 3 hours cross country is only a few minutes in flying time,
Any headwind during the flight, saying goodbye to the hangar friends, etc. will
take more time...
A couple of years ago, the average speed of our "fast" ultralights (here) was
80 to 90 mph, one pilot finished his 130 mph plus beautifull Kitfox,
Well, he was so proud of his speed, racing us in XCountry flights..
Until I told him that he spent "precious time" on the ground (destination airstrip)
looking at the sky for us... while we were still having fun in the flight
':-) :-) ;-)
Now we have three Xcountry groups in our Club:
The low speed ultralights (up to 70 mph, mainly weight shifts and open cockpits),
Our medium speed group (70 to 90) and the fast group 120 plus. All
groups enjoy their loose formation flights at least once a month.all year round
Sometimes even to the same destination, just to sit down and slowly enjoy
food and beer. This is big fun! Whats the hurry?
Saludos

So far I have flown about 22 hours of the 40 that the FAA and my DAR
require, the airplane has been performing wonderfully, she trims up just
fine (electric elevator and aileron trim installed) she weighed in at 790
lbs. empty /without fuel/no long range tanks installed, with that in mind I
have a few performance questions:
>
> With the landing gear fairings I am seeing speeds at 2400 RPM of
about a
100 MPH. If I push the engine to 2750 RPM I get about 108 MPH GPS. My
question aren't these cruise speeds quite a bit below the 132MPH that Zenith
claims?
>
> I have been experimenting with the trim and when I put he aircraft with
"heavy" forward trim and I hold the yoke back with a fair amount of effort
it seems like I can eke out a few more miles per hour out the the aircraft,
however, this configuration leads to one sore arm and shoulder. Could my
Horizontal stabilizer use some tweaking? Wings?
>
> Other than that the plane has been very enjoyable to fly, stalls are
benign at best. I feel real good about flying my XL and the view is great!
I think Zenith delivered inj terms of the kit, however, I want a little more
speed so I can beat my Cessna 150 friends.

Lance, I have just got to ask. What did you leave off or out to get an empty
weight of 712 pounds? The ZAC prototype weighs in at 730 and I have that by
over 50 pounds so what is your secret? Enviously heavy regards, Bill

Mark, I had the same problem. The guys that designed it must work at Ford
cause I couldn't figure it out how to make it work either. I called and they
explained, I tried and tried, but failed. So I scraped it and installed with a
piece of piano hinge and tiny camlocks and it works great and I have no fear that
it may suddenly pop open while zipping down the strip on take off. FWIW, Bill
