Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Zenith-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.
- Occassional posts by vendors or individuals who are regularyly
subscribed to a given List are considered acceptable. Posts by
List members promoting their respective products or items for sale
should be of a friendly, informal nature, and should not resemble
a typical SPAM message. The List isn't about commercialism, but
is about sharing information and knowledge. This applies to
everyone, including those who provide products to the entire
community. Informal presentation and moderation should be the
operatives with respect to advertising on the Lists.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Keith Ashcraft <keith.ashcraft@itt.com>
Hi Chuck,
Usually, the way these LED bar graph displays are driven, and what make
good sense for the trim indicator, is the linear actuator is a pot that
feeds a voltage, proportional to the pots position, (trim tab postion),
into the circuit, which probally has an LM3914 Linear Dot/Bar Display
driver, (or equilviant) which takes the input voltage and displays it
with the LEDS. This is the way that I have designed position indicators
in the past.
So....
As for the dead LEDs, it is hard to say. It would be narrowed down to
either the display or the driver. So where do you go from here, it is up
to you. It sounds like the actual driver IC is actually working, because
you state the same LEDs are dark, and while you keep adjusting the trim,
the next one in the row lights up, but the individual comparaters inside
the IC could be bad. See if you want to fix it, or see about getting
another display.
Good luck

as you change the trim some of the LED's don't come on, they are blank and then
the next one will come on. The ones that don't work are always the same, about
4 out of 10. It looks like there are 3 signal wires and 2 power wires to
the indicator. Does anyone know how the signals work, are they a voltage level
or what?

The bow in the middle, is part of the "structure rigidy" of the "box"
fuselage.
Just remember the experiment of the egg, will not brake as easy pushing
from the ends that from the sides... also how an arc in a bridge "works" as
a structure when weight is aplied in the center (this is a very looong arc).
This type of structure "trick" is used to lower the caliber (and weight of
course) of the aluminum chanel used as longerons...
Al this (including the bunch of "Ls"), are part of the rigidity of the
semi monocoque type of design of the Zenith Airplanes.
Yes, Mr Heintz is a Genius. Is extremly dificult to design Simple and
Efective things...

Hi Chris, Nick or Chris Heintz are the best people in which to get the
facts from concerning your question. But that doesn't stop any of us
pondering it and offering suggestions as to the design choices.
The CH701 does one thing exceptionally well! It has a STOL performance
which is hard to match by any other aircraft including the planes
clones. Originally the CH701's design called out for a 503 power plant
and a 68-72 inch prop. My line of thinking is that the fuselage was
designed to allow the most thrust from the prop with the least amount of
power. By bowing in the middle, I believe that it allows the plane to
perform better in the STOL conditions in which it was designed for. Now
with the design changes and the increased gross to accommodate the Rotax
912 series I doubt that this design portion is still a necessity. But
knowing Chris Heintz, simplicity rules and why change for change sake.
Well that's my 2 cents, sounds good in my grey matter. Though I could be
totally wrong, when I see Chris later this month I will ask him.

Anyone
know why it's not truly square? Same for the fusealge sides and top.
They

Hello, all
I am building a riveted fuel tank, and I am pretty close to start drilling rivet
holes.
Last night I decided to check the Cherry Q rivets I received from AS&S, and
something un-funny is happening: if I use the smaller riveter head / nozzle (the
one for A4s), the rivet stem gets stuck in the tool, and it doesn't come
out until I disassemble it.
If I use the larger head / nozzle (for A5s), the stem breaks properly and falls
off the tool, but the stem part that should stay in the rivet's head falls
off. It seems the rivet's head does not form properly.
It'll take too long to rivet the tank if I have to disassemble the tool every
time I pop a rivet, so I need to find a solution... :o)
Is there a different tool for popping Cheery rivets? Is my riveter busted (it
does work with regular Avex rivets...)? Or...???

Hi Carlos,
Is there some reason you want to rivet the gas tank? The normal way
to build one of these from metal is to have it welded.

Fwiw, I have been able to drive BSQP-4 (Aluminum body, steel mandrel,
protruding head, 1/8" nominal diameter) rivets just fine with a black
and yellow (Stanley?) rivet tool from the local hardware store. Just a
thought. Hope this helps. Peace,

There is an adjusting screw that controls how tightly the puller grips the
stem. If you measure the avex and cherry stems they are most likely
slightly different diameters. Adjust the screw and you should be fine.
Sometimes loosening the riveter head one turn will also have a similar
effect...but I can't remember if it makes the stem fit tighter or looser at
the moment.

Hi, Paul
Normal is relative - this is the way RV tanks are built (with *solid* rivets
I admit). And other people on this list also have done it also.
BTW, I'm not going to change my mind - all the (6061-T6, 0.032") parts are cut
and bent to shape and they fit nicely... :o)
Cheers

George,
I use an external 40A alternator in N601RT. I have the 18A standard alternator
wired as a backup which I verify is operational as part of my pre-taxi check list.
I use the 40A alternator as the primary alternator. Wiring and control methods
of the alternators for N601RT taken from aerolectric.com and the aerolectric-list
hosted by matronics.
Regards,
Roy
N601RT: CH601HDS, nose gear, Rotax 912ULS, All electric, IFR equipped,
486hrs, 592 landings
George asked:
Is anyone using the external 40 amp alternator on a Rotax 912?
If so, are you also using the alternator that comes with the engine?

All-
Can any XL builders with the factory aileron trim option help me out with a
little information? I'm building an HDS, and the factory trim recommendation
is a butt ugly (But effective, from what I hear) outboard tab. I don't know if
that's because my plans are 2001 rev, or if the XL aileron is appreciably bigger
than the HDS to allow more room for installation.
1. What are the dimensions that make up the aileron triangle at the main rib?
2. What are the tab dimensions?
3. What RAC servo is used?
I'm sure I could mount one of the mini-servos, but don't think 1/2" of travel
is sufficient. Any observations from those of you lucky enough to be flying
are more than welcome.
Thanks.

Hi Bill,
My recent factory kit includes the same "Servo" for the aileron trim
as the elevator trim. It is a .7 inch travel one.
I am not at my shop so I can't read the prints right now. If you
don't get the answer to dimensions, let me know and I will get them
for you. The design seems very good with a cutout similar to the
elevator trim and a triangular tube shaped trim tab that is inset
with the same trailing edge as the rest of the aileron. This doesn't
sound at all like your description.

Actually I can't. I justopen up the power supply, grab a components
catalogue and match the numbers.
50 microfarad at 450V I think it was...But you need to check.
Replacement is smaller than the aeroflash original.

Carlos,
If you pull a ton of rivets, frequently what happens is debris builds up in the
pulling jaws. This is very common with aluminum mandreled rivets. Disassemble
the pulling head and clean with carb. spray. Lube with light weight oil,
like air tool oil, once assembled. See if that helps.

Paul-
My description is of the 2001 rev recommended installation, which is
totally different from the XL. I can't see the dimensions in your picture-
can you give me the 3 sides of the main aileron rib, and the length and
width of the trim tab? Appreciate it.

Dear List:
I am getting ready to install my Woodcomp 3 blade Klassic propeller on my
CH-701 with a 912ULS engine. Any hints and help would be appreciated. What pitch
should it be set at? What is the best way to set the pitch? How do you get
each blade exactly the same? I've never installed a prop before and any
suggestions would be appreciated. Boy they sure are light!
Thanks

Hello Carlos,
I am sure I have a note from one list, about building riveted tanks, including
the name of the sealant to use betwen the two pieces (something like a liquid
gasket).
I cant remeber in the computer I have it... (office, home or laptop)
What I remember is that was writen by Mr Bob Hoover (the other Bob), he is a
VW engine expert.
If you think you can learn something from this notes, I will look for it monday.
Hope still is there.
Saludos
Gary Gower.

Hi, Paul
Normal is relative - this is the way RV tanks are built (with *solid* rivets I
admit). And other people on this list also have done it also.
BTW, I'm not going to change my mind - all the (6061-T6, 0.032") parts are cut
and bent to shape and they fit nicely... :o)
Cheers
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Is there some reason you want to rivet the gas tank? The normal way
to build one of these from metal is to have it welded.
