Download "Latest Appendix Z Diagrams" at: http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles.html I believe it's preferred to run 2 wires, rather than using the airframe as main grounding. Magnetism not an issue. Eric Jones sells lightweight cables, rather pricey, but saves weight on long runs. See: http://www.periheliondesign.com/fatwires.htm On the GPS: I suspect all modern GPS units are capable of displaying true OR magnetic headings. Even my cheapo $99 Magellan does it. Craig, on the 296, it looks like it's under MainMenu--Setup--Location. You can choose between true and magnetic, using either auto- or user- entered variation. Comes in handy for runway headings and ATC course assignments. And the mag compass -- yes, obsolete, but required on all aircraft (makes a nice hood ornament) --Rico do not archive __________________________________ __________________________________ ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 07:57:14 AM PST US From: Craig Spainhower Subject: Zenith-List: Re: Zenith-List Digest: Wiring Question 601XL 0235 LYC --> Zenith-List message posted by: Craig Spainhower Victor, I'm waiting to get my fuse back from painting, then I'll be mounting the engine and completing the wiring as well. Someone previously suggested a firewall bulkhead feedthrough (http://store.summitracing.com/)for power, I think that's the way to go. I'll be running four gauge battery cables + & - along the right upper longeron to the firewall. Then through the firewall with a bulkhead feedthru for power (to the starter/solenoid)and using a non-insulated bolt for the ground feedthru (with a length of cable to the engine). I will run cable on the passenger side of the feedthru to the power buss. I will probably mount a ground buss at the ground bolt for the panel. Grounding anywhere on an aluminum plane isn't a problem, except that the potential for corrosion exists due to electrolysis. All exterior lighting and fuel pumps will be grounded to the frame. I will send some photo's when I get the cables run. How did you route your battery cable(s)? Craig S. N601XS, 601xl lyc 0-235 airframe complete, wiring/FWF this winter I've started wiring, so far have battery cable run to rear fuselage area. Using Sky Tec starter with built in solenoid. There have been some real show stoppers as far as Service Bulletins are concerned. I was lucky in that the stator SB was the only big one that caught me and Rotaz paid for that.
