I know next to nothing about the Corvair or Jabiru. But, just as a data point,
I've flown a number of 172s and I have never flown one -- with an O-320 or an
O-360 -- that couldn't cruise at least 100 knots, with no luck needed. That
includes mis-rigged beater rentals with krylon-spray-painted N numbers that fly
sideways on tired engines.
And of course, one must keep in mind that the 172 is dragging FOUR seats through
the skies.... :) It's old, it's common, and it lacks coolness, but the 172
is really a remarkable design. A flying collection of compromises that just keeps
going and going like the energizer bunny.
However, I have no doubt that a Jabiru OR Corvair powered 601XL climbs better than
a 172. That big fat Chris Heintz wing just wants to take flight!
The real question is how many FPM Ben Haas is getting at sea level with that four
zillion horsepower fire-breathing STOL monster he's built! Although I guess
the whole idea is that he doesn't fly anywhere near sea level...
In any event, Happy Holidays to all from Project 801! As my present to the list,
and particularly to those who get the digest version, I'm actually going to
trim the quoted material in the e-mail below! LOL

Bill,
A Jabiru 3300 in an XL far exceeds C-172 performance. It gets 120
knot cruise while the C-172 is lucky to get 100. [snip]

Zie je dat een dikzak goed in een Jab3300 past ?

Bill,
Now you know how I feel. I've had the privledge of taking all seven of my
grandkids for a ride in my 601HD. My only dissapointment is that my wife
doesn't care to fly in small aircraft and hasn't even sat in my HD.
Congratulationd to you and Jake!
Jim H.

Bill,
Of course anything is possibe, but having built an HD and watching you build
the XL, they are just two completely different airplanes as far as how the
wings are attached.
