Then after assembly, air it up to max, and then deflate completely, and re-air it to operating pressure. This will help the tube settle into a less stressed position in the tire. When I first changed the tires on my tri-pacer, I found two of the tubes actually had wrinkles and creases in them from being folded inside the tire-- a blow out waiting to happen. Larry Portouw 601XL Kit Atlanta --------------------------------- Hi guys, This past week I've been airing up tires and found that my left main was down by 3 PSI per day, so I removed the wheel and tire and brought it home. Didn't see anything so I finally disassembled the tire and wheel and found a small crack around one quarter the perimeter and directly next to the valve stem. The 3.5 x 8.0 tube would have to be replaced. Graziano" Subject: Zenith-List: Re: XL Aux fuel tanks --> Zenith-List message posted by: "T. Graziano" Chris, When I ordered my 60lXL kit, which I received in Jan 04, I purchased the Aux Fuel Tank Option with the two extra tanks. In this kit, the two inboard main tanks had a 3/4 inch tube welded through the tank, through which the fuel hose from the outboard tank passed and on to the five way Andair selector (R/H Main; R/H Aux, OFF, L/H main, L/H Aux). I do not know if Zenith still offers this option with their now 15 U.S. Gal vice 12 Gal option. The Dwg for the Aux Fuel Tank Option is 6-WKO-1. If the Aux tank option is still available, I would think Zenith should be able to email you the portion of the dwg that shows the four tanks with their routing to the 5 way valve. During my flight testing, I ran both Aux tanks to fuel exhaustion. This resulted in sudden power loss both times, as expected, from my Jabiru 3300A. Shifting the fuel selector to a main tank and turning on the fuel boost pump resulted in engine restart within about 4 - 6 seconds from power loss. Redesigning for additonal pumps/solienoids/fuel lines/wiring/switches/related routings etc to pump from the Aux tanks to refill Mains, is in my opinion too complex and would not as reliable as just going to a five way selector valve. Yes the rest of the kit.. now the rudder is finished.. Since I will be getting all the bits in one Order I would like to pose a Q to the builders of the XL with the duel Aux tank set up. Flying in the Aussie Outback requires you to sometimes buy fuel in 44 Gal drums.. yes 2 X 11gal tanks means you have to leave 1/2 of the drum behind (Great for the next guy but bad and very expensive for you) So I plan to have the 2 extra tanks fitted in the leading edge for the odd time I need it..So How have people plumbed it?. I could not find much in the archives about the tanks so I have to ask here. Zenith say to plumb each tank to the center via a 5 way fuel selector. I have also been told by other non Zenith builders that I could just have a fuel transfer line and solenoid and just fill up the mains as required and keep the plumbing simple to inside the Fuse. So what have others done ahead of me? No need to re invent the wheel.. Also where can you get all the back issues of the newsletters? do they come with the complete kit on CD or what? and are they worth getting for the first time builder? Chris Down Under.. Archive the answers for others to follow.. ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 08:07:36 AM PST US From: Larry McFarland Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Tire pressure problem --> Zenith-List message posted by: Larry McFarland Randy, The 3.5 x 8.0 tube that failed was made by KENDA from Taiwan. Using much lower PSI than indicated on the tire may permit too much flexure and the stem is the only immovable part retained by the wheel, so it bends at the base of the stem. The tube had no wear at the sides of the stem, but I suspect that a thin inch and a half diameter patching rubber washer might spread the distress out enough to offer better lifespan. The tubes I bought yesterday were the Bikemaster type too, but I hope they'll be OK. The only other thing that might affect this is peak pressure loading during touch down. I most often grease it on, but the tube may still be pressing against too large a slot in the wheel and cracking may be the result. This is why I'm thinking of doing a washer patch before the fact at the stem. Haven't looked at the scooter wheel they are used in, but perhaps it would also be a good idea to see how they normally are fitted. The other two tires haven't shown any problem so far. Had not considered going with a 4 x 8.0 tube yet. On my XL I had started out with 28 pounds per tire. Taxied ok, but wobbled like a duck on landings. Talked with Roger D @ ZAC and he said 50-55 pounds. Seemed way too high, but I pumped mine up to 45 pounds. Taxis a lot straighter and though the touch down seems harder the roll out is straighter and braking more authority. So, the pressure is important, Best regards, Bill N505WP -----Original Message----- From: Larry Portouw Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Tire pressure problem --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry Portouw" Larry, Be sure to spread a little bit of talc around the inside of the tire before assembly. The only real reason to do that would be to provide more flexibility in managing weight and balance, since I don't have the long range bladder option. I'll be using a J3300, I'm 200lbs and will be flying solo most of the time. I have the wing locker option so can stow things there if need be. I think they buy gas tanks from some outsource supplier so a change in that area could have a serious impact on your shipment date. Also, the main spar is different for the long range tanks so lead time is an issue here too. I opted for the wing lockers along with navigation lights and strobes. If you are interested in using up 44 gallons of gas at one time, I suppose you could put some in plastic cans and store them in the wing lockers. (I don't think it was you, but someone in the last few days mentioned the 44 gallon issue in Australia.) Good luck with your kit.
