Hope you guys and gals don't mind this. It needs to be seen. Here's why the
FAA insists on someone at the controls when hand propping.
http://www.referenceonly.com/prop/
Click on the above link (or copy it to your browser) to see the photos of a
guy here at the Venice Airport who had just filled his recently purchased,
$16,000 Piper Cherokee, at the self serve pump at the airport. He could not
start the A/C normally due to some problem with the starter, so had to hand
prop the engine. He neglected to set the parking brake, and had the throttle
set to 3/4, so guess what happened? The plane took off....right towards the
self-serve pumps. Luckily the steel and concrete barriers were there, which
the prop struck, immediately tearing loose from the crankshaft. You can see
the damage that was done to the aircraft, and in the last two photo's, you
can see the 102 yard flightpath of the spinner and prop, and where it came
to rest on top of the hangar. Chalk that one up to experience. By the way,
no insurance on the A/C.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Steve Hulland <marinegunner@gmail.com>
I cannot remember who brought up the closing of Realito. In any case, I sent
several letters to AOPA, Congress, etc. and personally spoke with a couple
of people. There is a nice news story about this closing in the August 2,
2005 AOPA online newsletter. You can use the link located in the response
email from Chuck Smith of AOPA to open and read the article. Other answers
are in the same vain. It may be that the local pilots were not vocal and
dilligent enough in this fight over the years, I really do not know the
answer to that. Howver, I do know that we must all fight very hard to
preserve the freedom of flight. Even within this forum, dispite its main
purpose of promoting airplane building. I took out the message that I sent,
which generated this and several similar answers to keep this email fairly
short. If you want a copy of my very harsh email to AOPA, let me know and I
will send it via seperate email.
If you live within representative Lewis's Riverside district, write and tell
him of your displeasure and work hard at getting ride of him - make sure he
knows you are doing so. He is just like anotherMayor Dailey, a hinderance to
freedom.

Steven,
Thanks for contacting AOPA and for your comments on L67. AOPA never gave
up the fight to keep L67 open. Congress slipped an amendment into the huge
highway appropriations bill giving Rialto the authority to sell L67. The
following link will take you to the story:

That was me who first brought this up, and boy it's a good thing I wasn't drinking
anything when I read the comments about AOPA's fight or it would have squirted
out my nose. While it may be true that AOPA lobbied behind the scenes in
Washington, I can tell you with a good deal of certaintly that the local AOPA
rep (whose name I can't recall) did absolutely nothing constructive to fight this
closure, and and in fact was convinced it's not wise to fight it since we'd
lose out anyway. And this is coming from someone (me) who attended most of the
meetings, and personally called this individual to discuss the situation.
> It may be that the local pilots were not vocal and dilligent
> enough in this fight over the years, I really do not know the
> answer to that.
A small part of that is true, but only a very small part. Most of us pilots were
against the closure (based on the comments I heard at the meetings), but there
are a few of the larger business owners & operators on airport that aligned
themselves with the developers. Why? Because they are being lured by promises
to reloacte to a better facility (San Bernardino). So, the selfish interests
of a very few have affected many. It's true that the City of Rialto has not been
very active in maintaining the airport, and in fact, they have totally mismanaged
the facility (the existing airport manager, if you want to call him that,
is totally incompetent). But closing the airport isn't the only solution --
why not privatize it? Or maybe the development could co-exist with the airport.
From the article: "...the plethora of area airports. Ten other GA airports are
located within 20 nm of Rialto..."
Talk about a misleading statement. I live out here, and try to find a hangar at
one of those plethora of airports. There may be that many fields out here (although
at least one of them is an international airport -- not friendly to GA),
but there are also millions of people in the LA basin. Also, 20 miles drive
in LA is not the same as a 20 mile drive in Iowa.
Anyway, it's a done deal and nothing can be changed at this point, but the poster
was right when he said to be sure to vote out politicians that make inane decisions
like this one.

I built a CH640, not a 601, but I had some of the same concerns about building
that you have expressed. For a number of reasons, I decided to go the QB route.
I am extremely glad I did. There is still plenty to do to finish up, so regardless
of what standard kit or scratch builders might say about it, I still am
proud of the airplane that I built. Work progressed fast enough that it was almost
always a joy to build. Everything is straight and true. Your tool requirement
is very basic. With the 640 the wings and HT are already riveted on one
side, and final drilled on the other, so you really don't even need a large workbench.
A couple of sawhorses is sufficient. And the best part of the quickbuild
in my opinion, is that now 18 months after my QB kit arrived, I have 120 flight
hours in it instead of it still sitting in pieces in my garage. Everybody
has their own reasons for building. Some love the building process so much they
start getting depressed when the airplane is almost completed. Others are
closet aeronautical engineers who can't resist trying to improve on every little
thing in the airplane. Some love building, but never miss it once they are
done. Others just want to build a nice plane to fly. If you are in the last group,
the QB is well worth the extra money. If you are in the first 2 groups, the
QB just spoils all of the fun. If you are in the 3rd group, it's a tough decision.
I think CH's designs are fairly simple and designed not only to fly well
and be sturdy, but probably more than any other kit designer, they are designed
to be simple to build. So I think technically, most people can build one
of his airplanes. The question becomes, how much building do you want to do?

I think a rotating jig is possible, but probably more work than it is worth. When
I painted my wings, I clamped the main spar to a saw horse, and ran a strap
through the wing tie down, attached to an engine hoist. This held the wing vertically
with the leading edge down. This gave access to the whole wing for painting,
without having to reposition it at all during the process. It wasn't a
perfect setup, but it worked pretty well.

For some reason from time to time, people ask my advice when beginning their

I created a new page on my site to address this.

I invite comments on the content. I'm trying to encourage builders to relax
and get started. I hope that I am clear enough on that and not misleading
someone to be haphazard in their construction practices. Please let me know
what y'all think. Maybe I should add some sort of disclaimer. Thoughts?

Ditto on the 912. I've got 500 hrs on mine and am now removing the gear box

the basic engine will go for 1500 hrs easy. It's been a easy to maintain

Thanks for the post. Rialto is closing because the City of Rialto is the
owner & wanted it gone. Pure & simple. They took it over to have better
"local control" and then ran it broke and then claimed it cost too much to
operate & maintain. It does cost too much to maintain IF you invest nothing
for years in upkeep, do nothing but pull out ALL the funds generated and
keep raising the rents.
The Town of Apple Valley tried the same thing a couple years back with APV,
the same "Local Control" argument. As soon as they found out that they would
NOT be getting extra tax & building fund monies they expected and our Save
our Airport campaign, they pulled out. They will try again, but with the
County of San Bernardino in charge we have wider taxi ways, new GA hangers,
CHP & SBSD hangers all since the collapse of the hostile takeover attempt.

Great Job Larry,
So far no cracks on my thin plates but my wheelpants are off and and
keeping a close eye on the situation.
Are you planning on turning up a bunch of plates all at once...i.e do
you need us to order them now, or are you OK to make them as one offs as
needs arise?
Thanks Larry....

Subject: Zenith-List: Thin gear strut plate solution
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Larry McFarland
--> <larrymc@qconline.com>
Hi guys,
I finally received a response today from Chris on a proposed solution
for replacing the 1/8-inch gear strut plates that have occasionally
cracked from the struts. This was submitted about 3 weeks ago and the
following two paragraphs are part of what was sent to Zenith.
I made a weld-assembly of drilled 3/16-inch gear plates and 2-inch
diameter, -inch wall 4130 tubes that were welded away from the airplane.
These were turned down the thickness of the strut tube seen above to
permit a snug, sliding fit into the strut tubes. They are then axially
aligned on the plane with the forks and wheels mounted, and then allowed
to rest on the stub shoulder. They are drilled front to back and bolted
using an AN-4 or 5 aircraft bolt and Nylock nut. Proper fit with a
stress-reducing radius at the shoulder plus a wall thickness of .125
inside the strut tube would provide strong attachment and solid fit that
should not be a problem for wheel pants configured per Zenith.
I am submitting this process and method to replace the thin strut plates
with thicker ones to avoid re-welding the tubes or having to build new
gear struts. The best part is, of course, it avoids performing any
welding near the aircraft.
Chris has given his approval on this approach and was satisfied that a
single-bolt attachment was adequate for the job.
I posted the drawing for anyone that may feel the need to replace their
gear plates. You still need to know whether your struts are .065 or
.058 wall
before turning the insert tubes.
See the link below for the drawing and print it if it satisfies your
needs.

That is why aviation is "normally" safe, everybody gets (or has to get) trainned
to fly, this includes preflights, instruction and practice. I bet this guy
never had proped a plane before. Same happens when we fly a "new to us" airplane,
even if we are a million hours expert pilot, we need a breefing (or formal
instruction if needed) from an instructor or expert in type pilot before
we should even atempt to start the plane...

That is why insurance is all about :-) We all have once in a while (hope years
in betwen) our 5 minutes of stupid moment... Maybe has to do with Biorythm
:-)
Thinking in advance might prevent it to happen, we must be alert always to avoid
it.. Mainly in aviation.

Kevin,
Keep in mind that the 1.5D thing is a recemmendation, not a hard and fast
thing. As long as the rivets are tight in the hole (especially in the spar)
and are set "enough", are not cracked, are not Bent or "toed" they will be
fine. That is unless you are building a show plane where someone will be
inside your wing measuring the "bucked" rivet head sizes. I bet you will be
fine!

Tadeusz,
I don't believe the large effort involved in integral fuel tanks in a wing
not originally designed for it would be worth it. That is unless you've got
experience, can do the design work tec, then go for it. I don't think it
will save much work either.

Thanks Jim. Good to hear from the Basic sheet metal workshop co-chair. So
which would you use? I went ahead and ordered some -8's.
.5625-.287= .276 showing with -9's
.500-.287 = .213 showing with -8's
5/32 X 1.5 = .234

For painting, can I safely hang the wings from the slat attach support

Great answer. I am going to cut and paste it to Phil Boyer, Chuck and
several others. If AOPA is taking our money and being the point
person/organization for protecting GA, they must make sure that every time
there is a fight, they choose the right people to lead and defend. Seems the
guy at Realito was not even close to being up to the task. Get rid of Lewis
and let him know why - it does not matter his affiliation or seniority - he
is a lowlife and I have called him just that in a letter. Do not use
profanity, but do not mince words in private or public. I hope you find a
good place for your future aviation endeavors.

Hi Frank,
I've turned 4 sets of 3 for .065 wall struts and this week began a
fourth set of 3 to practice TIG welding the gear
plates. The sample strut tube has to be a perfect sliding fit and I
find that TIG provides the least amount of diametral
change. First sample tubes were thinner, so the next set will tell us
if the machined diameter will hold dimension after
welding. I always practice a critical weld several times to obtain
optimum form, depth of penetration, etc. Tomorrow
I start on the heavier material and will have a much better feeling for
if this process is going to be o.k. If it becomes
necessary to make a few more, I'll just do them as one offs. Have to
cut the samples thru to see if penetraton is where
its needed. You should be hearing from me later this week, but.don't do
anything until you hear I'm satisfied with
this idea. My welds look beautiful, but the thin tubes got out of round
by .003 while heating and cooling.
Have been playing with leaky inner tubes this past week, so little else
got done over the holidays.

Get a copy of Front Page from Microsoft and get started. It is very easy to

does have limitations, no doubt, but its ease of use is what a first time
user will love. Take a look at my websites: www.maspl.com and

Forget Front Page, it is complex and has all the typical MS
bugs. Plus, it generates non-compliant HTML (that is, it doesn't
always work with all compliant browsers).
Nvu is free and works very well. There are other free editors, but I
use this one for our EAA chapter's website and have had no problems with it.

I run several web sites. Learned everything thru experience and the browse
and borrow method. HTML is fairly simple there are opening tags and the
same tag to close but uses a slash in front of the command e.g... for
bold to stop the bold
I had one site that the webmaster required the use of FrontPage. Besides
being cumbersome, it cost $150. The code was very bloated so I hand code
most every thing. I use arachnophelia for my web editor as it displays the
code and easily permits the inject of the HTML tags.
You could get some sort of reference about HTML so you can find some
examples. But find a simple site that you like, right click and look at the
code IF it is NOT flash. Change the text to show what you what to display
and try it out. Many ISPs provide "home pages" so you can create you own.
There are several Free hosts like Egoists, Tripod, and others. There are
tutorials at many of these to get started.
Start simple, then make it fancy.

The last site I listed has about 100 different pages all linked. All it took
was time.
You probably will want to get an FTP client as well as a web utility as
these will make the job easier.
I have never used NVU but the price is right.

Yes, there is where we hold our wings for painting. Works great if you test first
to hang the wings at your best "painting height".
To prevent painting from -running drops- (sorry for my english) we also hang
them from the alerion hinges to put the surface to paint in 45 deg. worked
great. Larry my brother is the expert painter.
We made our painting room from a portable shade, the one that compress to a
big sac... Very common at SAM's we just used the structure with clear plastic
over it and a fan.... Used green thin disponsable kitchen cloth as filter
for dirt particle , where duct taped to holes in the clear plastic. Inexpensive
and usefull filters :-0.
Larry was. always betwen the fan and the wing, with a respirator mask with ouside
air pumped, Sherwin Williams Chromo One paint.. Great paint but be carefull
using always a well fitted mask and respirator... Same for most all of
the paints.
Great advantage for the rag and tube builders that can use outdoor Latex paint...
well OT material :-)

Initially, I only painted the fuselage and tail on my 701. When I get
ready
to paint the wings I will drain the tanks, remove the slats and flapperons
and then remove the wings..
For painting, can I safely hang the wings from the slat attach support
brackets?
Thanks,

As most of us, I am no expert in web pages... but I will like to know where I
can get a program to build a page similar to this one:
http://www.fighterultralight.com/portal.php
Look around this page, has EVERITHING a aviaton page needs. Probably the designer
is an expert... Or I dont know nothing but build free Tripod pages :-)
I will be happy building a similar page myself.

Yes! That is a real BIG builder's danger... I Just use the computer when is
to late (or too early in Suturday or Sunday mornings) to make "building noises"
or too cold (for you up there) to build in the unheated garage.

Bob,
Be careful you don't get sucked into the computer black hole of web site
building instead of plane building.
