I had a cover for the paint smell. I put the sealer on the new tile in the bathroom
in the afternoon, and suggested when she walked in late from work that
it sure smelled like nail polish remover. But I chickened out on keeping the
painted skin in the living room, and took it back to the garage after drying
in the house for about 6 hours. I just hope it sticks to the metal in the
26 degree nights. But maybe the movie got her out of the house long enough
for the smell to dissapate some.

Don,
Yes the same plug is used. You can procure a plug without the computer end
plug and use it to provide power from the aircraft and provide the data
stream (data out) to your A/P. Look at page 92, Appendix C of your GPS 295
"Pilot's Guide and Reference". I have my 295 installed on the glare shield
panel on an adjustable RAM mount directly in front of me as shown at
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/pic05/493tg3.jpg part of
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/6-photo79.html
I can remove the 295 after flight and I also have a remote antenna hookup,
although the antenna you can attach to the unit also works ok.. I would have
probably hard mounted the 295, but ran out of panel space.

Tony, if I remember correctly the Garmin 295 used the same plug in the back
for
both downloading information off of the internet and running the power off
the plane. Is there a plug that you bought to both provide the data stream
to
the autopilot and to power the Garmin off the plane? Or do you have to run
it off of its internal batteries while using the autopilot?

I feel obligated to reply to this question, hoping that my experience
might be of value to other builders. First of all, I was learning to
fly during the same period that I was building my 801, so when the
plane was finished I did not have a lot of piloting experience - and
virtually all of that was in a Cessna 172. During the high-speed taxi
tests everything was going so well that I was seduced into easing
back on the stick with the idea that I would lift off a foot or two
and then settle it back onto the runway.
Easy to do in a 172.
Big mistake in an 801!
When the 801 is ready to fly, the tail drops and the plane launches
into the air. What I had expected to be a foot or so off of the
runway quickly turned out to be more like 30 - and the sensations you
experience in that situation are not ones I can recommend -
especially to low-time pilots. The subsequent touch-down was not pretty.
The bottom line is flying your own creation is an incredible
experience - and I love my plane - but you have to know what to expect.

Subject: | VGs on the bottom of an 801 horizontal tail |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Keystone Engineering LLC <keystone@gci.net>
Rick
I installed VGs on the bottom of my short tail. I liked them so much I installed
them on my new longer tail. I'm surprised more 801's don't have them, as easy
as they are to install. It is a Saturday afternoon project.
I made mine out of scrap standard "L" 2 inches long with the front cut at a 45
degree angle. I installed them just in front of the main spar on the horizontal
stabilizer. This kept them out of the rivets. I installed them on 4" centers
on my short tail and I installed them on 3" centers on the new longer tail.
I installed them with double sided tape that is 1/8" thick. I installed them
at a 38 degree angle to the relative wind. They are probably larger than
needed but I did not loose any cruse speed.
They made a significant improvement in the effectiveness of the elevator.
My next 3 hr project is to install some small VGs just in front of the trim tab
to try to improve it's effectiveness.

Hi list,
Have any 801 builders put vortex generators on the bottom of their horizontal
stabilator? If so, where did you place them? I am thinking they need to go as
close to the elevator as possible. I have the original 801 stabilator and want
to add some additional elevator authority. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all.
I would like to share my experience to the list, of my first flight of
the Zenith 701.
My total flying experience was 120 hours in a Kolb Firestar II, before I
did the first test flight in my Zenith 701, Joeing 701.
Those of you who know the Kolb aircraft would agree that this is a
perfect plane to exercise your landings, because you have a perfect view
from the cockpit with no obstructions in front. It is so easy to learn
the final touch of pitch and throttle control, because our light planes
can not be flared as a Cessna or other heavier planes because of light
weight and more drag on the Z 701
After a very thorough inspection of all controls, engine and
connections, and engine run, I did the test flight myself. No crow hops,
thank you.
I have a bad experience from when I did my first flight on a
Firestar.(Another story)
They are not for the unexperienced pilot. I could do them now, but not
then.
I took off to a safe altitude and moved the controls very cautiously for
the first minutes until I learned the feeling of the controls.
This plane is so responsive and is so easy to fly. No surprises and the
view is excellent. I know the view will be different from the 601 but I
am sure the controls will be similar.
As I mentioned before, the landing is without flare until you have
almost touched the runway with the throttle at idle in ground effect.
Just maintain a higher speed like Chris suggests in his article.
It is all about the fine pitch and throttle adjustment until you are
just a few feet from the runway at almost stall speed that you wait or
"flare" just slightly until you feel the smooth touch on the tarmac or
grass (which is more forgiving). A longer runway is great for this first
test flight. I say "flare" but it is almost like you just hold the stick
back if the nose tends to drop in your final touch attitude.
I know my experience is not much compared to most pilots on the list,
but I hope it give you some idea of how it is to test fly your new
plane, which is already a tested and approved design. There should not
be any surprises in the handling and performance of this design of Chris
Heintz, if you have completed everything according to plans.
Most important of all is, do you trust yourself to do it? Confidence is
very important here. If not, get someone to help you.
Happy flying.

Hi guys,
I've apparently deleted the email asking about a HD or HDS-gear fork
lift I made for quick
removal of a wheel and tire. With a small $20 Farm & Fleet jack, the
assembly is an easy one to make.
I did a drawing in TurboCAD that can be seen on my completions page and
printed for
specific dimensions. (See the links below).

I flew my 601 HDS with the nose gear wheel pant mounted.
The plane needed more up elevator trim and flew 5 knts slower.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
Would appreciate any thoughts, words of wisdom, etc>

Greg,
I originally had Zenith wheel fairings fitted, but removed them because
they were too round at the
front, much like a basket ball. The fairings still should be smoother
than the fork, tire and axles hanging out.
The ZAC front wheel fairing caused my rudder action to continue to
rotate in any right or left turn
because the nose of the pant was so far forward of the tire. I
ultimately designed a wheel pant that was much
more elliptical like a sunfish front to rear. Performance improved
considerably and the nose
gear remains stable. With my wheel fairings, the plane seems more
slippery in pitch.
I can't see how you'd end up going slower though, even with the gunboat
Zenith wheel fairings.

As most of us, I am no expert in web pages... but I will like to know where
I can get a program to build a page similar to this one:

Look around this page, has EVERITHING a aviaton page needs. Probably the
designer is an expert... Or I dont know nothing but build free Tripod pages
:-)
I will be happy building a similar page myself.

Forget Front Page, it is complex and has all the typical MS
bugs. Plus, it generates non-compliant HTML (that is, it doesn't
always work with all compliant browsers).
Nvu is free and works very well. There are other free editors, but I
use this one for our EAA chapter's website and have had no problems with it.

We have the Navaid Devices ,Inc. Autopilot in our 701,
http://www.navaid-devices.com/
Works great with our hand held GPS and is good to have it in any plane, Great
in Cross Country flights and in turbulence or sudden fog (as a wing leveler).

I have flown in another plane that had an autopilot, and recognize the usefullness
it would provide on long cross-country trips. I am considering installing
one in my 601 XL, and wonder if anyone else has done so. What sort of trouble
they had, and what equipment they installed. I would like to have both altitude
and horizontal control. I now use a Garmin handheld 295 GPS, and wonder if that
can be used to drive the autopilot from the current route being flown. Do
any of them allow this?
