--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Tommy Walker" <twalker@cableone.net> Shop Size. More is better if you can afford to heat it in the winter. I'm building a 701 in a 10x20 1931 era garage. Both wings are hanging on the side walls, suspended from the rafters. The rudder is leaning against the wall in the front, the stabilizer is too. The elevator is in my basement along with the cowl, doors, windshield (the wife thinks all that "stuff" in her laundry area is ugly). My engine and prop are stored at my buddy's house.... When I move from the rear of the garage to the front, I have to turn sideways to keep from bumping into the wing or hitting the table. If I didn't have the storage space under the work table, I don't know what I would have done. More space is definitely better! I have used a flaring tool a lot of years ago, but don't know what to look for. Does anybody have a recommendation on where to buy one or a make and model that works well? It seems that a lot of them are 45 degree flares. Are they used in auto brake lines or water pipes or something? Also some of them are listed as a double flare. Do I need a single flare? --> Zenith-List message posted by: "T. Graziano" <tonyplane@bellsouth.net> Gig and Craig, Pictures sent sepcor shows how I installed the servo. Looking back, I probably would have mounted it on the floor on my added .032 flanged skin doubler. My thinking at the time was if I mounted it up, I would have better access to it. I have added a couple of stiffener straps since the pics were taken to limit the movement of the serve, to lessen any possible "tail wagging the dog" effect. It is really neat flying xcountry with an AP. Last Saturday is used it on a 70NM trip with about a 40kt cross wind at altitude, and it tracked true to GPS course line. The airplane nose was pointed about 15 degrees off the course line. This makes for a different perspective relative to what the GPS screen shows and what you see out the canopy - if you do not account for the nose being pointed off. Take Care, Tony Graziano 601XL, N493TG - 60+ hrs. ----------------------- Time: 11:53:45 AM PST US Subject: Zenith-List: re: 601 XL Autopilot? From: "Gig Giacona" <wr.giacona@cox.net> --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Gig Giacona" <wr.giacona@cox.net> Tony, do you have any photos of the servos mounted in your plane? I'm thinking I'll go with the Trio and would like to see the installation Time: 12:47:01 PM PST US From: "Craig Payne" <craig@craigandjean.com> Subject: RE: Zenith-List: re: 601 XL Autopilot? --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Craig Payne" <craig@craigandjean.com> Somebody (possibly Tony) sent me some pictures of servos in a 601 but now I can't find them. They may have been for a different AP but that doesn't matter because the servos of the different manufactures are roughly laid out the same. If any one has pictures e-mail them to me and I'll put then in the photo archive. -- Craig

--> Zenith-List message posted by: MElrod3732@aol.com Hi Fellow builders: I am about to install my Woodcomp prop (that came with the Skyshop firewall forward kit) on my Rotax 912S engine on my 701. I know the end objective when setting the prop blade angle is to be 6% below max RRM at full throttle. I am seeking recommendations for the initial blade angle from builders who might have a similar prop/engine combination that has worked for them. Any other helpful hints or advice would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike Elrod 701 98% complete

    Subject: CO Detector
    From: charles.long@gm.com
--> Zenith-List message posted by: charles.long@gm.com A few months ago I had a muffler crack on my Zenith 601HDS due to a defective weld. The problem was quickly resolved but prompted a study of CO detection systems currently available on the market. Even without a muffler shroud heater, the nosewheel actuator openings provide some opportunity for Engine compartment gases to enter the cockpit. The following CO detector was installed in my aircraft. It is self contained and battery powered ( 3 x AA) so operation is simple and not dependent on the aircraft electrical system. I mounted it on the side panel next to the passengers legs with velcro (5 minute job). Here are some basic specs and cost, although would encourage you to compare the many brands that are out there before making a choice: Kidde 900-0146 digital display model Cost - about $30 (watch for sales at the big stores) Displays CO levels above 30 ppm Maintains in memory peak CO levels from 11-999 Low Battery and Error indications Operating Temperature range 40 F - 100 F 85 DB audio alarm activates at 150 +- 25 ppm 5.5" diameter x 1.4" deep, .66 lbs 5 year limited warranty Hope this prompts many of you to consider adding a CO monitoring device to your equipment list. This is the standard for home use, but is high for an enclosed cockpit. I've gone with a COEXPERT (www.coexperts.com)unit that will detect easily down into the single digits. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann G." <johann@rafpostur.is> Hello list members, I have been very unhappy with my installation of the right side throttle cable to the Bing carb on my Rotax 912. The cable on the pax.(right) side is short and the angles from both the throttle linkage and where the cable attatches to the Bing carb. linkage is very sharp, which causes a stiff movement of the cable. The idea was to change this cable for a longer cable which extends right of the carb and around the front, over the engine and back from the left side of the carb. This cable will be long, but without any friction. Does anyone have a source for the cable needed for this? No such material in Iceland. Thank you, Johann G. Iceland.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: doug kandle <d_kandle@velocitus.net> I too have gone with this low level detector. The reason is that long term exposure to even low levels can cause problems (there are days when I fly 10 or 12 hours). Also, a problem that lets in low levels may soon be admitting large levels. I found that the it is not at all obvious where CO enters the plane. I ran some experiments where I placed my detector in different areas of my C-206. Left out in the open, I never get anything. But cover it up and move it around and I found that I could get a bit of CO coming in the rear of the plane (behind the cargo area). I've heard that in some planes (like C-185s) there is a significant risk of CO entering back near the tail. So even with no leaks anywhere in the exhaust, there can be a risk. It may be worth it to borrow a sensitive detector and fly with it some to check out the baseline (normal) levels in your plane. It is sold by the foot. There are a few accessories for this cable such as the bowden cable clamp, and no-slip cable-safe fittings and other end parts. You can find these products at aircraftspruce.com in the catalog on page 159. I hope this is helpful. Just messure and cut to size. Also the clutch cables from some motorcycles (off road) have teflon inside and are long enough. Also can use the bicycle cable cover with aviation cable 7x7 or 7x19 of the size... cant remember now the diameter... What ever cable we use, we change it every year /service to the carburators, As they get adjusted by a press lock, we dont want to use them twice... Just for safety, but they should last several years. Both cables are long, to make open turns, both meet near the center of the engine, with tie wraps where ever needed to prevent touching the engine. Saludos Gary Gower. Rudder (built at shop), elevator, horizontal stablizer, flaps, ailerons were completed and stored in a small, unused bathroom. Then the wings (without ailerons or flaps) I put together with clecos, then disassembled, deburred, corrosion protected, and merely left unassembled -- sort of my own quickbuilt kit. I've finished the rear fuselage and have been able to rivet floor and sides separate. Now I'm working on the front part. As dr_steve_adams pointed out, it is also an advantage to delay the move to the hanger as long as possible. I can walk from right into the workroom at any time and spend a few minutes or hours on the kit without driving anywhere. John Hudson Tiner 601xl working on fuselage

Maybe the type of lock for the ascelerator in idle position like the ones in Sporty's (see Sporty's catalog under Owner and FBO Suplies), but designed for the ZAC "T" handle, Easy to make, I think... If we built a plane can built a lock :-) Has to be bulky and painted red for preflight porposes.... also a chain (welded hardened type) inside a hose with a padlock, making an "8" on the prop hub will do... Yes, once I got stolen a 200 dls stereo from wifes Minivan, though a 700 dls rear glass, instalation included and a 400 repair bill for the instrument panel, Now the original cassete radio is reinstalled :-( we use a CD player with a sender though the lighter when on the road. works better and is portable... Saludos Gary Gower Do not archive. japhillipsga@aol.com wrote: --> Zenith-List message posted by: japhillipsga@aol.com Gary, thanks for the input. The "strange" airport I parked my plan at is a small strip at Cleveland Tennessee where back on 14 October 1972 I was living in a little trailer just outside of the fence while going to university. That particular night two 15 year old guys hot wired a C-150 and tried to fly it away. I arrived at the crash site to see and hear them scream as they were cut out of the wreckage. Really, I am more concerned that someone would screw with the thing overnite as a prank and I not catch it the next morning and you guy read about it a week later on the ntsb. I am insured for vandalism and theft, it's what else that could occur that concerns me. So the lock. If it's broken into at least I'll know to really look for something. Someone broke into my Corvette in 1976 in Suttgard Germany. Nothing inside to steal, but the damage was significant. Never locked it after that. So I understand both side of the argument, Thanks again and best regards, Bill -----Original Message----- From: Gary Gower Sent: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 12:40:30 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: Zenith-List: 601xl canopy lock. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Gary Gower Hello Bill, About locks in our airplanes I have two things I want to say: First, mostly all the airports (at least little ones) are not dangerous for airplanes, ,I always have found friendly people in them. Every time I visit Spruce I go to Corona Airport just to look around and talk to pilots, there is always someone there and airplanes to see, most unlocked but we know that lookers don't even touch the lexan with the hands,... When visiting Houston (relatives) I stop also at several little airports, sometimes never see a person, most planes unlocked and safe. Aviation for me is another world. But as Murphy says.... "will happen in the less probably place and moment". Generally the vandals or addicts prefer cars parts or other more easy to sell parts that specialized aviation equipment, harder to sell, they need fast easy money, Second: If someone wants to steal something from any airplane the doors, Lexan windows and the thin aluminum are very easy to break open... Even without tools. Maybe a little lock mechanism that can be removed when ready to fly or something that is stetical will work, just to prevent some curios guy to flip open the canopy accidentally. Normally the "gray cover" used over the canopy is enough to show that the plane is locked... Needs nerves to untie a cover of an airplane just to see if the canopy is unlocked. airport platforms are in the open. The 701 has a key in the handle, but the doors could easy be bent to open them by a theft... Is a real shame that the T guys choose airplanes that September... Probably never ever will happen again... But we have to learn worldwide to live with this, from now on... I will try the local bicycle shops and motorcycle dealers. If I do not find anything there, ill just order it. The idea from Larry McFarland is great, but it will have to wait until everything else is finished, the minor details and mendings. It seems that when you think the building of the project is finished, there is always something that needs fixing or improving. Nothing big, but things like dark material on the dash, oil thermostat, seats need covering and so on. Best regards, Johann G. Z 701 do not archive

Yesterday I spent two hours at the FSDO office with logs in hand and shoes under my arms ( very thorough security screening to get into office). I got the Repairman's Certificate ok, but it's sort of a hassle. I have heard from a couple of guys that had a DAR do their inspections that the paperwork for Repairman's Certificate was filled out and sent to the FAA at the date of the original inspection. I would be sure ask whoever does the inspection if they can do your application for R C at the same time. It's just one page but needs to be signed by some representative of the FAA unless you go through the process of proving you built the plane a second time. The annual condition inspection will sneek up on you a lot sooner than you think it will.
